Just now got our new "official" The Villages phone book. More scrap for the new trash company to burn into electricity.

What a waste of trees although it may be worth saving for when we have the next Covid wave to use for T.P.

There seems to be no way to opt out of it.

it's about the advertising dollars...just like the frequent 'magazine' that is inserted in the Daily Sun

It can't compete with the junk mail that comes in the mailbox every day, and we are forced to pay for by subidizing the Postal service.

You know it never bothered me when people went through their mail near the garbage can and discarded whatever they didn't want before COVID. In order to social distance and do the correct thing, get your mail and get outta the way. Rip up the mail at home and no holding a replay of a PTA meeting in front of the mailboxes. Beware of your surroundings. Look at the people waiting for you to move. Be considerate and more than anything WEAR YOUR MASK when you are at the facility. Just do it. Care about me if you don't care about you. Wake up!

Discard your Phone Book at home. Use your head and have a little respect for others. These garbage cans aren't for phone books and advertisements.

These aren't mailed, they are dropped off at the front door. Nothing to do with the mailboxes (at least not here, maybe they mail-drop them to some areas ?).

If it were not for the junk mail, you would either have no mail service at all, or be paying a whole lot more to support it.
Junk keeps the postal service just about viable.

A "Pet Peeve"! Where does someone think they have the right to throw their "trash" (the lunrequested ocal phone book) in my driveway?

I haven’t had a landline phone in many years, but I actually find this book useful. If you take the time to go through it, you’ll find info about how to get what/where in TV; maps; coupons; find a listing of people from your home state-even your hometown; churches, shopping and restaurant information; and so much more.

Glad we still get the phone directory, newspaper and monthly magazine. Reading print versions is so much better then sitting in front of a computer.

Waste of trees. Stupid. We were at least able to recycle them before, now we have to breathe it in after they burn it.

The discharge from modern incinerators, is a lot less toxic than the exhaust coming from your car, or gas golf cart.

The junk mail everyone gets is not the fault of the post office. Contact the people that send it out to you and opt out. The post office is essential for many people who get important, life saving packages, like medication. The post office is your friend.

I agree with the OP. Google is good enough for me nowadays, and I certainly don't want to kill trees for information anymore, or smell the ink.

It's fodder for the people that take the time to complain about everything. Name a community that doesn't get a phone book.

TV phone book has almost all homes listed with CELL PHONE numbers and landlines if they exist. Getting your neighbor’s cell phone number can be difficult if not impossible online. Also you’d be surprised how much info about TV and it’s procedures is listed in the phone book. I find it very handy.

Don't spend ten seconds throwing away junk mail in the garbage cans. It might upset the hall monitors.

A lot of Veterans work for Postal Service. The USPS is among the largest employers of veterans; therefore, it wouldn’t bother me at all if “forced” to subsidized. As for the phonenook, ours is drop off, not mailed. Plus, I like reading them. There are actually helpful info in them. Thank you, -myk

The problem with the paper phone book is that it is not searchable in the modern sense. There should be an online companion edition so that we can find all listings for our hometown or street in TV, for example.

A "Pet Peeve"! Where does someone think they have the right to throw their "trash" (the lunrequested ocal phone book) in my driveway?

I feel the same about the POA newspaper. It goes immediately into my trash bin. I sent them an email complaining about their littering, but they keep doing it anyway. They really should contact all of the residents to determine who is interested in receiving their paper.

As to the phone book, how about printing about half as many and leaving them at rec centers for people that want them. If they need to print more, they can and if thousands are left over, they know how many to print next time. Of course the prices they get for advertising would go way down.

Exactly. The whole thing should just be put online. Of course they would lose all of those advertising dollars. I think they will eventually as advertisers begin to realize that only a small percentage of our residents actually look in the phone book.

So why not just put in on The Villages website and not waste all that paper? Print a few copies for those that want it.

why do they keep doing this? i've asked to be 'removed' from whatever lists they have, but keep getting these little rain-soaked bags that go directly in the trash

If the cell phone numbers were published on the website, I think they would be entered into national databases and used extensively by the telemarketers. I don't even have my number in the paper phonebook.

While reading these comments I read pros & cons about the phone book deliveries. It was a delight to hear the pros. The cons were nothing but petty bitching. If you don't want the book just throw it away. No one cares to hear negative Nellies especially during the pandemic. If you think it is garbage put it in the "garbage can" it is a simple task.

Because SOME (NOT ALL) people are very self-centered and IGNORANT. They would just throw it all on the floor. If all people were conscientious and interested in safety and societal well-being we would NOT need speedbumps or other forced restraints on bad behavior. Be careful what you wish for.

Trees used for paper are a crop and a vital part of the economy.
There is a question of efficiency. With less wasted paper, there would be less trees needed in the Tree Farm. Therefore, less machinery using polluting tractors and small gas engines for cutting. Less pollution from sawmills and paper factories. Less large trucks transporting the tree and paper products - less wear on roads and accidents. Yes, some paper and smaller tree farms would still be needed. And yes, some jobs would be lost, but A.I. and robotics are inevitably reducing jobs anyway. Lots of social changes then!

How do you find people in your home state? DO yo through every listing line by line and randomly call them to say hi??

I have the TV phone book on my kitchen counter. Although I Google nearly everything I used that phone book to check out taxi and other services. For residents our neighborhood has an up to date quite detailed phone book which I treasure, everyone lists their numbers and contacts and it is strictly local. Very useful.
