I was talking to a friend today about Apps on the cellphones. I don't like them, as you give up some privacy for convenience. I told him that the third parties that own the apps have access to everything on your I-Phone when you use them. The "third parties" can access and read your emails, check your bank accounts, all your contacts and even get their email addresses and phone numbers from your cellphone.
An hour ago I got a notification from "Siri" saying that there was a game on Wednesday, Oct 13 at 6pm and lasting until around 8p.m.
Coincidentally, I did get an email from a friend saying that he would be at the rec center at 6pm if anyone wanted to play cards.
So, "Siri" DOES READ YOUR EMAIL......and even though Siri is available on my Iphone, I have never activated or used it.
I don't trust technology. Maybe I should throw away my cellphone.

Anybody that has cell/smart phone gave up there privacy the minute they entered their information and turned them on. Also with Google, FB, Yahoo!, Twitter And anything free all sell you private information. Only hackers can steal you’re banking accounts and you have to help them do it.

Unfortunately, the convenience of being online in any capacity comes with a certain loss of privacy. We all either need to make some sort of mental peace with it or do without.

We have an Alexa device which is used exclusively to play audiobooks. I've disabled the mic, all notifications, reminders, skills, etc. But it still bothers me a bit.

Should one agree with their goals, The Electronic Frontier Foundation (https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Electronic_Frontier_Foundation) could be one of the organization to support.

Please don’t assume that since you have disabled certain functions, that said functions are actually disabled.

Way too paranoid. Software security continues and privacy laws continue to improve dramatically. Why deny yourself one of the most revolutionary advancements in our time. I control my house with my phone and love it. As for banking, I get an alerts if anyone so much as looks at my account, much to my wife’s chagrin

You comment that you don't use Siri and never have turned it on .... and using that as "evidence" that the bogeyman is intruding ... shows that you are probably correct .. you should toss your phone in the garbage.

Yes ... you life on the phone is likely being stored in a giant network near a hydroelectric plant in Washington State ... yes ... but if Siri is "on" ... you did it buddy.

Well, if Siri doesn't read my email, then why did it send me a notification of what was in my email??

BTW when the apps ask if they can use your location, and you say "no", do you really think that they aren't using it? Of course they are. When you get an app, you agree to their terms by hitting "I accept". BUT DID YOU REALLY READ WHAT YOU AGREED TO? Read it word for word before accepting would be a good idea.

A few years ago, I took a Microsoft course to understand everything that was included with their Windows/Office package. The instructor noted that while the security software on computers has become much better and is updated regularly, cell phones are much more porous for a number of reasons. His suggestion was to never actually purchase anything through a cell phone. Getting alerts from Visa/Mastercard was okay since no actual account numbers were included. I have found that there is nothing I need so badly that can't wait until I get to my computer. With regards to tracking - If they get rid of Social Security and I get so desperate that I need to rob a bank, I will make sure to leave my phone at home. (poor attempt at humor).

My car insurance company keeps asking me to keep location on so they can track my miles and driving habits.

By doing this every time we walk into a store I get a message from the store who knows I am there and often sends me survey.

As a result keep location off unless using waze.

Joe, I totally get what ur saying, several weeks ago my girlfriend and I had pedicures. While talking to my nail tech, suddenly Siri pipes up with “ that’s not very nice “. I was asking her how her week was going? Evidently u don’t have to start a question with “hey Siri “ in order to activate. Gotta say this NEVER happened before and was kind of creepy. My phone was in my purse. I have it set for Siri to only recognize my voice. Again creepy.

Unfortunately privacy laws have been slow to keep up with the pace of technology -- press your legislative representatives on this because they are the ones who set the laws. Sometimes, when you don't pay $s for an app, the "price" you pay for the convenience of having it is to provide some information about yourself, such as your email address. As always, it's your choice. If you don't want to give up certain pieces of information about yourself, or you are concerned that hackers will steal your information or that a business won't use the information they have on you in an ethical way then it is your choice to forgo the convenience and not use the technology. (Though in some cases you may be left in the dust by the rest of society that does choose to use it.) But it's your choice, of course!

There are a number of phrases that will unintentionally trigger Siri, Cortana, Google, and other listening devices.
Due to waveform shape similarities, many sounds are misidentified by digital analysis.

On Android phones each app has multiple permissions which you can accept or deny. It does take a bit of effort, but I dent access for areas an app doesn't have a reason to need access to. For instance, photos and email for most apps. Location for many apps and the list goes on. If an app will not work without a permission I don't see a reason it needs access to I look for an equivalent app that is not as nosy and failing that make the decision of how much I really want that app.

If you develop apps for the Android using any structured development environment the developer will "toggle" what permissions the app requests while in the development environment. In most cases this doesn't mean the app will actually access everything, it was just a default selection for the developer and that the user "accepts" when using the app. As noted in the referenced post, the user has the ability to disable permissions for any given app.

For most apps these "requested permissions" are not as nefarious as it may seem. Still, use good judgement and if you're not comfortable, don't install the app.

I disable my siri and delete google app because it snoop on my activity even I am not using the app. If you go to google setting and disable the activity stuff still it goes back on itself. So , I deleted it. If i do shopping on Amazon app and when I open Facebook , you bet what I bought in Amazon it is in my newsfeed ads. So I deleted facebook since they censor everything. I am guessing that the wording of the email caused an entry into your phone's calandar. Since you do not use your phone's calandar, you do not see this happening. Siri is simply reminding you of an upcoming event that is on your calandar. You can turn these functions off through your phones settings. I have them off because I find them annoying.

My calendar has absolutely no entries.....I have never used it, and never need to. I believe that SIRI reads all emails, contacts, and anything in your cellphone and anything that your cellphone can access. If you access an app, say a bank account, you need to enter a password to get into the account. SIRI monitors all that you do, and "reads" the password into it's memory, and also sees what you see on your screen.
It may take no action on this activity, but compiles the information and does what it wants, like saving it or selling the statistical accumulation of your, and everyone else's information.
I also believe that someday the population will wake up and find all their electronic information has been hacked, hijacked, and unavailable for the owner to access and use.
