View Full Version : Parking in Driveway on a regular basis.

I have read the posts on parking a car in your driveway. My conclusion is that it is permitted. For 1 car garage home I would like to know about what percent of the residences park a car in their driveway overnight on a regular basis. What is your opinion of parking a car in the driveway on a regular basis? Thank you.

We live in a CYV neighborhood and several people always have a car parked int their driveway. On our street alone I know of at least 5 homes that always have one sitting out on a regular basis.

I see very few cars parked in driveways on a regular basis. In some cases it is necessary.

My opinion? I couldn't care less. I don't consider a parked car an eyesore.

Myself? I always drive my car into the garage even if it's for a few minutes. The sun is a big enemy of the car.

Agree, as long as the car is fully in the drive.
Me, I am like Pturner, me and the wife ALWAYS park in the garage to protect it.

Paulandjean,
Depending where you live as far as parking on the street. In CYV neighborhoods you can not park on the street. Any guests must use the designated overflow areas.

In our development (suburb of the great metropolis of Memphis TN) you can only have one car outside your garage. period. You can get fined, lien put on property. At least it's OK for short time visitors.

Glad to know it's not a TV issue

Down the block from me a home owner put up a nice looking red tin roof. He didn't get permission from the Architectural committee.
No tin allowed and red color is a no no also.
Down it came. Combining comments of two threads in one. Hope that's OK...

I don't believe there is any covenent which says u cannot park ur car in the driveway. There may be something which says one cannot park an unregistered car in the driveway, but other than that example parking in driveway is ur right as a homeowner.

I park in my driveway. I already dented my car once trying to get in the garage in my CYV with those curved driveways. Just try parking a car and a golf cart in these garages and sooner or later you will probably hit something. I already ran into 4 people who damaged their car as I did. Some say that they let their spouses move the car because they are afraid they will hit something. If I had a two car garage I would use it but no way for me with a cart and car. Plus my car is nice to look at.

I have had several houses with garages and we always park our car in the driveway. These days the paint on new cars is pretty durable. I have never had any issues with my car's appearance suffering from being exposed to the elements; even snow. I see so many people going through great lengths to park their car in their garage and I wonder why. In the CYV's there is just enough room to park a car and a golf cart but there is very little wiggle room if you want to be able to get into your car without its door hitting your golf cart. We used to get stressed out everytime we had to use our car but now we are stress free and have plenty of storage space in our garage.

Army Guy

Vinny, I agree, the garages in CYV's are tight we just kept trying to get the right way to do it! But we fit our car (Honda Accord) a standard Yamaha golf car, my Harley (a Fat Boy) and still have room to walk around etc. Now I will tell you, we do not use the garage for storage. The little we do store is up in the attic in plastic bins. The only thing in our garage besides the vehicles is a small metal storge unit I use for my tools, etc, and we put that in the diagonal space next to the Heat Pump with our golf clubs in front of the Heat Pump in the other diagonal space. My CYV is a Beaureguard (sp?).
I will admit, my wife has me park the car in/out of the garage cause she is afraid!

I wondered why this thead was started. You can park in your driveway in The Villages if you want. Day and night, night and day, but now that I have reread all of the posts I see that there are restrictions on parking in your driveway in other places.

We have never parked our car in our garage in TV. There is plenty of room, we just don't. The car doesn't get iced. It doesn't start slow. No one bothers it. It is unlocked most of the time.

We are always running around in it.

I wonder if the neighbors are wishing we would put it in the garage....

Always safe guard your garage door opener when parking in the driveway. If the car is unlocked it is like leaving the garage door open.

Park in your driveway Gracie and never give it a second thought. We have a two car garage in North Carolina and never park inside. My husband uses the garage as his football room. No room for vehicles with all the televisions and couches.

We have two vehicles in the driveway in NC. Our neighbor keeps her Cadillac in the garage and her husband keeps his old Bronco in the driveway. Who cares? It's their driveway. He even washes the cars in their driveway. I couldn't care any less.

I have never heard of anyone complaining or objecting to a neighbor parking in their own driveway.

I think the topic is parking a car in a driveway in The Villages. Sounds like there may not be any covenants in the NC neighborhood.

To Gracie, I think looking down a street and seeing 60 cars parked in driveways is not appealing.

I totally agree with you. JMHO, but I was always of the impression that it made a house look trashy and cheap. Also that meant the people were poor and did not have a garage, though we know that is not the case in TV as all homes comes with them, except in Historic Area, or they were lazy and used the garage as a dumping ground. Once again, don't attack me, JMHO!!! To each there own as long as it is within the deed restrictions.

Bogie. We have deed restrictions here in Ohio. What is the difference between covenants and deed restrictions? Is it a rule that you shouldn't park outside in The Villages?

We park in the garage when it gets cold up north. We live in a nice neighborhood Army Guy. I see cars parked. I hate when people park in the street and then you have a hard time backing out or getting around them.

I have a house in TV also. We park in our driveway there as do many of our neighbors in the cul-de-sac. In TV we park our golf cart in our golf cart garage. Not every house in TV has a garage Bogie Shooter.

We have a very strict HOA in a true gated community in NC. People are still allowed to park in their own driveways. To each his own I suppose.

I agree the neighborhood looks much nicer without cars parked in the driveway. If you must just make sure the vehicle you park there legally belongs there according to the restrictions. They don't belong in the street. So park in the drive if you must as long as it's not mine.

Not all cars fit in the garage. My neighbor has a van which will not fit. I have another that has 1 garage, 2 vehicles (because one of them is employed), and 1 golf cart. Are the ones with the van supposed to trade it in for something that fits or should the other neighbor buy a bigger house?

The only way cars in the driveway look trashy to me is if they are a piece of trash, but I have yet to see that in TV. Granted not all are luxury class cars, but they are certainly nice ones.

People who don't take care of their yards, etc. create the eyesores.

Other considerations of why we prefer to park our vehicle in the garage as we have over the years whenever we had the option to do so.

Landscaping and other service people working in close proximity to car or walking past with deliveries...who knows flying debris from lawn edging tools, a UPS box being delivered, the fertilizer hose dragged around & spraying your vehicle, the junk falling from the trees and blowing about, the birds paying homage to the shiny roof & windshield; heck we even had a nest of mice living in the hood next to the engine when we lived up north. Do bees, snakes (& gators :1rotfl:) camp out in vehicles (inside open windows) or under hoods around here?

So we keep ours indoors for mainly these reasons...not neighborhood appearances.

I came from a "private," gated street where every homeowner parked on the street. Why? Because the garage, if there was any, was 1) too small for today's behemoths, and 2) was accessible only off the alley in back, which everyone knew was unsafe!

We knocked down our garage there at least 45 years ago!

My 14-year-old car loves being inside all the time here in TV! No more ice, snow, leaves and such.

But, I'm reasonably (un)comfortable with two neighbors. 1) Her SUV-style vehicle sits outside all the time because the garage protects her "vintage" Mercedes! 2) They're over-"vehicle-ized," with two cars, two golf carts as well as a Harley! And, half the time, they're away!

It's part of the charm of TV, frankly! :-)

Nothing like a $50K car in your driveway to make your house look trashy.:22yikes: Cars in driveways is trashy but restaurants filled with people wearing shorts and tropical shirts exudes class? There are a lot of things that would be considered trashy back home but perfectly acceptable here. there will always be cars in driveways in TV due to the whole storage issue and the smaller size of many of the garages. We rented a CYV and if we ever get to move there and buy one of those then I am sure our mini van would be parked in the driveway. I would be to afraid to drive it into the garage.

Vinny, I hear your point but, the price does not matter of the vehicle. Cars in driveways longterm once again JMHO, present a look of unkept. I guess years of seeing my vehicles lined up dress right dress in the Motor Pool has tainted me, but when I look down a road and see vehicles in the drive, the area just looks cheap. Case in point there is a new Housing Area they just built right Off-Post. The homes are similiar to our CYVs, and VERY upscale. They all have garages but none use them, when you look down that road, it just does not present itself as a classy upscale neighborhood. Also, look at your TV video, when they show Homes and street shots, all vehicles are off the driveways!
Your comparison of how people go to restaurants does not really fit, as I can choose not to go to a place like that if I do not want to!

In a CYV, there is only one option, and that is they use the designated overflow parking areas, That is IAW Deed Restrictions for CYVs.

There's a world of difference between what you are describing and cars parked in the driveway.

TV has restrictions against parking in the yard and extended parking on the roadway! People in TV are permitted to park in their driveways; and as you point out, it's still a nice, neat community.

The point I was trying to make, perhaps poorly, is that your definition of trashy is purely subjective and apparently not accepted by the powers upon high since we are allowed to park our cars in our driveways despite some pretty strict restrictions in place to keep TV from looking trashy. Why even have a driveway if not to keep a car on it? Might as well just have the garages open up onto a street or make the driveway very short to save on pavement cost. Seems that throughout TV the intention was to provide parking space for cars as the driveways are sized accordingly. Perhaps a lifetime of living on military bases has colored your perception of what is trashy. I have probably not moved around as much as you did but in my 13 moves there was never any negative connotation associated with leaving your car in your driveway. Most people used their garage for storgage. :D

Yep It's true and I cannot deny it. I double checked and the house, garage AND driveway belong to me. I also checked my pink slip and the car belongs to me too. Now that to me suggests that since both the car and apron belong to me, it's no one else's business if MY car is on MY apron.

Like wise for my neighbors. I keep my nose out of their business and expect the same courtesy in return. Nuff said !

Hi Gracie--We've been travelin'......
Who knew this could turn into pages and pages.....
I have a vacuum cleaner. And I have a house with a living room. Now I bet everyone would agree that I am well within my rights to keep that vacuum in the living room if I choose. I may even have a really good reason for doing so (my closets are full of junk and there's no room; I have multiple cleaners for different jobs; I like to have it "ready" so I can just get up and go....) but I think most would agree that my living room would be more attractive without a vacuum cleaner parked next to the sofa. I think cars are just cars, not a design element. Now MelZ's MG IS a nicknack and SHOULD be parked in the drive.
I don't care what anybody wears to the pool. I don't care if you wear brown socks with sandals. I don't care if you keep the litterbox in the kitchen. And I don't care where you park your car........

Exactly Skip. I for one, just stated, JMHP, that I think it makes a street/area look bad. I guess using the word "trashy" is too strong a word for most, but back in Alabama it can be used for a wide range of scenerios. And yes, probably my military career has a lot to do with my opinion on this, but I think we can all agree on this, that is why we love TV because of all the rules & restrictions. As I have stated before on this board, I have lived off-post several times and witnessed first hand a neighborhoods decline due to no rules, etc, and it is not pretty.
I am sorry if I offended anyone it was never intended to do so. If your rules etc say you can park in your drive, you can, do I personally think it looks bad, yes, once again JMHO in the context of the orginal discussion.

Exactly Skip. I for one, just stated, JMHP, that I think it makes a street/area look bad. I guess using the word "trashy" is too strong a word for most, but back in Alabama it can be used for a wide range of scenerios. We moved in three months ago. There has been campers, cars, pickups etc in driveways alot do to getting garage painted, boxes unpacked etc. Did it make the neighborhood look bad? YES. Now that everyone is closer or completely moved in, I can see a big improvement without the cars in the driveway. We have one house down the street with three cars so they always have one in the drive. It does distract from the appearance, but it is allowed, so I will defend their right to leave it right there even though it would look a lot better not to see it sitting out there all the time.
