Mens hand shake

Why do some men feel they need to give other men a death grip with their hand shake greeting? Some of us have very arthritic hands and it is painful to meet someone that squeezes your hand as hard as they can. Why?

When I worked, we had a few clients with arthritic hands and they would not shake hands, explaining that it was just too painful. People were very understanding.

Maybe some feel a firm handshake conveys a better greeting than a "wimpy" one...unfortunately for you, it's not the type of handshake that's the best for you, and probably some others.

When I was young, a l o n g time ago, my dad always reminded me to give a firm (not crushing:)) hand shake when I met someone. Maybe this is something people grew up with? Good point tho about being aware of people who my have arthritis.

I agree that it's roots go way back. Probably came from a time when America was predominantly a blue-collar nation?

My father always said to use a firm grip - not bone-crushing (that was for arm wrestling). Try to match the other person's grip.
