Do you tip those workers who come in and install carpet, paint or upgrade your bathroom, etc. etc.?

we regularly tip the workers that we hire...we see it as another opportunity to give back to our local community...but it's not automatic...it's based upon their attitude and the quality of work

yes, we do. for the trash pickup we actually hand out xmas cards with a small token of our appreciation inside. i'll never forget the look on the driver's face when we gave him one-complete surprise as if he never got 1 before, lol. i do it cuz it feels good, & now we know them by name.

Depending on the job sometimes an appropriate small taste after they start and then adjust according to the job they do. The key is to let them know more is coming if they don't disappoint. Remember we got a Stimulus Check. It's to Stimulate those who deserve it. Our lawn crew is my favorite target for a nice tip and something cold to drink. They give their all in a rough and thankless job. It's customary to do this where I come from.

because he took a liking to our pug. now when they come by, she has to be the 1st 1 to greet them. now & then we get a different driver, usually around the holidays

We just had a large tree removed from our courtyard, and were happy to give the three workers a generous tip for a job well done.

Stan, a nice Sangwich or a case of beer or NOTHING is appropriate in many cases. Judging somebody else's way of handling things for me is not the way to go.

I'm sorry to hear you are sorry about it because it's none of our business. :mademyday:

I'm sorry to hear you are sorry about it because it's none of our business. :mademyday:In general, not specifically referring to this post there are some people here who do that in 90% of their posts. The old saying "if you can't say something productive then just stfu" applies. Or some saying like that! If everyone followed that golden rule things would be much nicer. Just to note, there is a difference between disagreeing with someone and explaining why one disagrees vs. just making a snarky reply that either intentionally or UNintentionally only serves to insult which adds nothing positive to a discussion.

Are you talking about Christmas time or cleaning out the dryer vent?

This is where I am old school. I think how I spend my money or save it or share it is very personal. I think you would have to know me well to pass judgement on whether or not I am kind to others.

I think it wise for most people to be ready to see huge economic chaos. Then it will be time to quietly give to those starving or homeless, especially those who are mentally unfit.

I dislike it very much when people pass judgement on others not knowing what they do and how they think and how they live.

It depends on the situation. If I'm paying a 100 bucks to do a one hour job om my cart. No. If it is an electrician doing a $150 dollar job that took him about an hour - no. If it is a worker -not the owner - making 15 bucks an hour and he/she does a good job then probably a few bucks.

I was recently charged $110 per hour labor for 4 hours (1 hour per brake) to change the brakes on my RV. I did not tip the worker since I figured I'd been screwed enough already.

In NY where we have the automatic trucks where they don't even get out during Christmas he gets out and tapes a card to the can with his address on it.

If it’s the owners of the company , I do not as they are getting the money from the job and I am sure they have padded it generously. However, if it’s his workers, I do tip. If they are there for several days , I will buy lunch for all also. I always make sure there is water available for them also.
Holiday time is the time for tipping my regulars- the lawn guy, the pest control, newspaper , postman, etc. They work hard and should be rewarded so I get them a gift card usually.

We tip all of the contractors also and amount is based the same as above. I never knew to do that but am proud hubby is so generous. He also leaves $5/day for the maid/housekeeper anytime we stay at hotel. Never knew to do that before either. In today’s times even more important.

We do show our appreciation to those workers who do a great job!!

For example, we had 2 extra large palms removed from our courtyard, and 9 men here with equipment, and they did not miss a beat, very professional and job well done. Besides paying a huge sum for removal, we paid all 9 workers a nice tip and provided lunch. They were so appreciative. Very respectful.

The two men who moved us in nine years ago charged way too little. They worked and helped and were stellar. We insisted they take much more than they asked for.

However we only "tip" these folks at Christmas;

Lawn people, Pool people, Trash people. We don't hire anyone to trim the bushes or clean the house.

Is this getting to be a battle as to who is the most decent human being? Money is power. If you don't spend it, you still have it, to keep yourself independent and to help others. Only God is interested in how you disperse it and only He knows what is in your heart.

I believe that tipping contractors is more geographic in origin than it is an ethical or Miss Manners issue. Midwesterners didn't tip the Vet when he came to castrate the bull calves.

We tipped the workers from the moving company when we moved in. We also leave a nice gift or money at holidays for workers who frequent our home such as housekeepers or landscapers. Other than that we do not tip. For a single job a quote is a quote and we have found them to be excessive in The Villages. If the boss is not paying their workers appropriately it is not my responsibility to cover. We do however provide beverages and snacks/food if they are at the house more than a few hours.

When cashiers at restaurants have a tip jar, tipping has gotten a bit over the top,

We tip people, especially employees of the companies that we hire. If it's a one owner, one employee then it depends on how well they do their job. The people who have these jobs depend on us, as customers. They do not have high paying jobs but still have high cost of living. Most have families but these are the best jobs they can get. Giving a little bit more to them just seems like the right thing to do.

How much do people tip the mail station person?

retiredguy123
12-12-2020, 10:01 PM
It depends. If the quote is fair or a little on the low side, I will tell the workers in advance that I will be paying them more than the quote if they do a good job. That gives them an incentive to do good work. It seems to work. But, to automatically tip all workers after they finish doesn't make sense to me.

I don’t believe in guilt trips sorry.

People need to be charge a proper amount per job. It is not a matter of who deserves a tip. How am I suppose to guess how much a job is worth? What is involved? What materials are needed? How much they cost? How humble is my service person? I prefer a proper estimate of costs rather than guessing at all these things myself. With a waiter one can see the service one receives and knows how much the food costs, with contractors usually one does not.

I always tip but the amount depends on quality of work and attitude. I don’t tip a percentage but a dollar amount that I feel good about at the moment. Coming from a GC family in NYC I like to talk to the subs. I understand FL has a relatively low cost of living but these subs really don’t make much. I have the resources that allow tipping but I don’t fault those on a fixed income for not tipping.
