I recently bought a used cart. Obviously, our names are not the same as the previous owner. The Villages garage will NOT remove the old names because of potential damage. Buying used carts and changing names isn't new. How have others done this?

We were able to simply peel/pick the old ones off using fingernails, took a while. You may want to try a hair dryer to soften the glue and then try the finger nails. Also, if you do not want to use your finger nails, automotive parts stores usually carry plastic (hard vinyl) spreaders for Bondo, these are also useful for scraping off decal and not damaging paint. Do NOT try any metal tools as you will damage the paint, also many chemical used to remove decals can damage paint. Hope this helps.

Why not just have the names painted over with some kind of decorative flourish, and not have any names on it at all?
I'm guessing the names you're talking about aren't decals, and are painted, and then the whole front end sealed to protect it from chipping.

If the names are painted you could paint a solid rectangle over them and when that dries put your name on top of the rectangle.

Take a look at Amazon. Goo Gone Original Liquid - 8 Ounce and Sticker Lifter - Surface Safe Adhesive Remover Safely removes Stickers Labels Decals Residue Tape Chewing Gum Grease Tar Crayon Glue
8 Fl Oz (Pack of 1) Under $10. Works like a Champ if you are removing a Decal.
I can remember using EZ Off Oven Cleaner one time when I was young and foolish. It not only removed the decal it removed the plastic the stickers were on.
If your dealing with paint give a local body shop a call. They will learn ya rite quickly.

They will come off very easy with a hair dryer. Nothing else needed.

Or just park the cart in the sun for a while.

Remove adhesive with butyl celosolve.
Locally buy this in a cleaner concentrate. "Totally Awesome" buy at dollar General, dollar tree, home depot. Butyl celosolve is used in diluted forms in household spray cleaners, Windex, it is also used as a degreaser in auto shops and in fracking fluids.

WD-40 typically dissolves adhesive. I have used it many times to remove labels from auto body paint. You might try it in a hidden spot first to make sure it does not affect the paint.

A hair dryer works best. Using any type of chemical takes quite a bit of time as it needs to slowly work in behind the lettering. Using a hair dryer, heat up the letters, then just peel off.
You can buy new names on eBay for around $7-$10. Just make sure you get the vinyl that is 7 year vinyl. Very easy to apply!

:agree: I agree completely. Despite what the expert says, in 16 years here I have never seen the names painted on a cart.

Use the hair dryer method and you can use dental floss or fishing line held in both hands and draw down across the letters.

One thing not mentioned is that when the old letters are removed, the paint may have faded a bit from the sun and the names may still be visible. Be prepared to deal with this possibility.

I think a hair dryer, if needed use the paint scraper but use the plastic blades ( not the razor blades they typically come with)Plastic razor blades is what dealers use , you can get them at Home Depot.

I agree with you. Can you believe all those complicated responses to a simple problem. Just go to the courthouse in Bushnell. Bring a bunch of money and the OP can have their names changed in about 6 months. No need for hair dryers or adhesive removers. Duh so simple. Can’t believe only you and me came up with the best solution.

[MOST names on carts are vinyl graphic tape. Use a hairdryer to loosen them then they peel off very easy. This works on all the pinstripes, as well a team logos, you name it.

:) After using the hair dryer method to remove our names before selling a cart. I then used a little rubbing compound on the areas and it helped with that problem.

These are decals and will soften when a little heat is applied. Sometimes, just leaving it in the sun will soften it enough to be peeled off with your fingernails.
You can get new decals made at almost any golf cart shop. I got mine at Market at Marion - just happened to walk by a shop that made them while you wait.

Ask your car service center what they use. I always have any decals taken off when I buy a new car (I refuse to advertise for a dealer) and there is never a mark. Have done this for my last 3 new cars without a problem.

We bought a used one that had decal names (originally from The Villages Golf Cars). They peeled off with my fingernails, but it took some time to do it. There was no damage to the golf cart.

Another vote for a hair dryer, Also at auto paint stores they sell spray can of stuff that body shops use to take mounding, emblems etc off with no paint damage

Use a hair dryer on the low heat setting. It softens the material and makes it easier to remove. Also a plastic scraper will help.
Keep moving the hair dryer so it doesn’t affect the paint.
PS: NEVER USE A PAINT REMOVAL HEAT GUN !!!!!!!
