We liked it too. It was a little slow getting going, but quickly picked up speed.

I thought it was very good also. Wished there was a second season.

I agree, this is a great series. I was worried that it would turn out to be some sad tale of a young women's struggle to make it in a male dominated sport, or some type of soap opera with chess play only serving as a superficial background element. Luckily, it was neither.

I read a critique of the movie's chess content by a serious chess expert, who said that it was surprisingly accurate, right down to the tournament settings which were correct for the period. To insure that the details of the the chess play were reasonable, most of the games were actual games played by grand masters of the period. They even went to the point of teaching the lead actress how to move the pieces the way that a grand master would.

The only inaccuracies he spotted were that talking to one's opponent during a game is considered bad sportsmanship, and that the game play was sped up to take place in minutes rather than hours. Even these can't be considered flaws, only reasonable dramatic devices.

Loved it! Unlike so much content today, it held my attention completely. I wasn’t watching while checking my phone, iPad or whatever. I actually watched and got lost in the story and time period. Highly recommend.

A great easy to follow analysis of the climatic final game. Great show.

It is so nice to see her portray a woman in a strong leading position. We are half the population so it should not be so unusual and the men in the film at first in disbelief but actually supporting her! loved it. Especially the ending in the park. Binge
worthy.

If you like this series, I'm sure you love a movie made in 1993 titled "Searching For Bobby Fisher"

I read that article by a chess expert, too, and enjoyed it, as I also enjoyed the series a lot. Here is a link to the article.

We watched all 7 shows and enjoyed them. Only one giant plot hole, and one small one.

Giant - she leaves the car on the way to the airport and walks to the park where chess is being played. The car continues to the airport with the government handler who was supposed to look after her, and did so throughout her stay in Moscow. Given the way his role was portrayed, he would have left the car and walked after her, not continue alone to the airport. This scene is simply not realistic.

Small - The night before her match with Borgov in Paris, she slept with the model. There was no hint before that she was attracted to women, and no explanation or follow up afterwards

I agree, excellent series! Just finished watching the last episode last night and am bummed out there aren't more. I was concerned it was going to be a bland show, how exciting can chess be? How wrong I was, never a dull moment and very well acted. Best show we've seen in a while.

Ditto that. One of my favorite movies. Highly recommend it as most of what is coming out of Hollywood now is unwatchable! :a040:

I happen to know one of the actors in the show from years ago, while checking on the cast, i was surprised . . . we watch 1-2 shows a night, when we don't have work to do .

Yes, social dilemma is next. there is another one I recommend, but its been a few years, and can't remember the name

On your recommendation I saw it listed on Netflix tonight and watched first 2 episodes. Liked it a lot ! Thanks for the tip. This is a good one I might well have passed over. Always searching for a good book or a good film... They can be hard to find.

Great book ! Don't have Netflix but the whole series will probably be in our Villages/Sumter library like the other series.

For history buffs or others, the library has a good series called "The Crown" about the present English queen, all done more like a novel with very good acting. Takes queen Elizabeth from her childhood, to marriage, queen, etc. but presented more like a movie, not a documentary.
