Who remembers WC Sliders? Still crave? I know...frozen products avail in stores - not the same at all. I grew up in Chicago area - 35 years there, and would LOVE to have the ability to get Sliders locally...not every day or week mind you, but... yum.

Tiny hamburger time grows ever nearer for Orlando.

Construction will begin on Orlando's first branch of the famed fast-food chain White Castle – also set to be the largest free-standing White Castle in the WORLD.

The 4,567 square-foot restaurant – complete with indoor and outdoor seating and two drive-through lanes – will be located at the Village at O-Town West, a mixed-use development at the intersection of Palm and Daryl Carter parkways.

The Orlando White Castle is on track to open in 2021, adding 120 jobs to the area, as well as countless miniature sandwiches.

White Castle executives said Florida caught its attention thanks to groups like “Bring White Castle to Florida,” a Facebook page with almost 10,000 followers.

.......................................

Cravers - let's get a WC or two in The Villages! Business would be brisk with so many here with the taste for sliders...>

There goes my polished figure. I could go for a couple of Double Cheeseburgers with Bacon and some Onion Rings. What Mrprez said about Krystals is on the Money. The White Castles in the Supermarket are not even close to the ones outta a fast food joint. You can count on us if they open one as long as the preparers wear masks.

Having lived most of my life in close proximity to Louis Lunch, and having worked at both Burger King and McDonalds, I've learned to accept that any fast-food burger might as well be any other fast-food burger.

Louis Lunch is the first hamburger joint in the country, and it still serves hundreds of people every day in a tiny brick building. The building, on the National Historic Registry, was actually moved down the block due to development of the area. They grind 5 different cuts of meat every day in the back room, all burgers are cooked to order on cast-iron grills that they installed back in 1898. It's served on white toast. You can get cheese-wiz, onion, or tomato. No ketchup, no mustard, no pickles lettuce whatever else. They will yell at you if you even ask. They're amazing.

Doc. This where I differ with you clinically. They never, ever had that effect on me and sometimes a stick of dynamite wouldn't do it.

I like me some White Castles now and again...do not support Crystal Burgers they are not the same at all. I must say if you warm up the Frozen White Castles with cheese carefully...they taste pretty good...

I have fond memories of White Castle being one of the few restaurants that people in the South end of Columbus, Ohio allowed themselves to spend money AT. dangle participle.

I was at White Castle’s yesterday. I take care of my mom so I’m in NY about 10 days/month. I visit WC about once per month, love the taste but can feel my arteries narrowing as I eat them. My first memory of throwing up was from WC, I was about 6yo.

The other burger suggestions here are good too, In-N-Out and Whataburger. I have been to In-N-Out many times and like their burgers and fries. I’ve been to Whataburger only couple times and recall it being quality beef.

What I would love to see is a Carvel. I go to Carvel fairly often in NY but it would be nice to visit one in a GC.

As a native Chicago Southsider just the mention of White Castle reignites cravings. Who knew or cared what the mystery meat really was, or how the little holes in the patties speeded the grilling? The sautéed chopped onions and soft square buns...mmm good!

(The frozen ones you can buy in the grocery stores don’t come close. And just like Chicago hot dogs, NEVER add ketchup.)

OMG! I so agree and would totally support! My Dad would eat lunch there and slip a few sugar cubes in his pocket to give me when he got home. When in High School, it was an affordable place to go and after late night activities, we could always rely on White Castle. My favorite order was cheeseburgers and French fries with cheese.. yummy! Way back in our teen years, White Castle was our last stop when out cruising around, either trying to get into our stay out of trouble. This was usually 1 or 2 am. I get my WC fix a few times in the summer home. The taste is pretty much the same, but they are half the size, a piece of cardboard may even be thicker, two bites and your done. By the time you pay for them with taxes, they are close to a dollar each. There are better fast food burgers out there with coupons, more bites for the same price. But, then...they have the CRAVE going for them.

White Castle burgers were never called sliders. They were burgers and when I was a kid growing up on LI, NY they were 14cents. The Daily News had an occasional coupon 5 burgers for .24. Belly Bombs was a name we sometimes called them. They were great after partying at night and stopping for 10 or more. They also had great coffee. The frozen ones they sell in the supermarkets just don't do it. The owner would not open any new ones unless the area had sewerage treatment plants. No cesspools. There were still some on LI when I left. Yo BELLY BOMBS!

The one I wish we would get is LEDO's pizza. It started not too far from the University of Maryland and there are quite a few franchises. There is one in Orlando but I wish it was here. White Castle burgers were never called sliders.

...........................

Slider (sandwich) - Wikipedia

History "Slider" is believed to have been first used to describe the onion-steamed small burgers at White Castle restaurants. The term has since been appropriated by other restaurants, usually to describe a small hamburger, but sometimes used to describe any small sandwich made with a slider roll. White Castle later trademarked the spelling variant "Slyder" and used it between 1985 and 2009

The History of Sliders

The short story here is that Sliders were first made by a hamburger chain called White Castle. They were nicknamed Sliders and later on they copyrighted the name Slyders.

White Castle was founded in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas. Walter A. Anderson partnered with cook Edgar Waldo "Billy" Ingram to make White Castle into a chain of restaurants and market

White Castle. At the time, Americans were hesitant to eat ground beef after Upton Sinclair's 1906 novel The Jungle had publicized the poor sanitation practices of the meat packing industry. The founders set out to change the public's perception of the cleanliness of the industry.

They were very small burgers that were sold at five cents a piece until the 1940s, and remained at ten cents for years thereafter while growing smaller. For several years, when the original burgers sold for five cents, White Castle periodically ran promotional ads in local newspapers which contained coupons offering five burgers for ten cents, takeout only.

The typical White Castle restaurant architecture features a white exterior with a crenelated tower at one corner to resemble a medieval castle. The Chicago Water Tower, which stands on Michigan Avenue's Magnificent Mile, is said to be the model for the classic building.

What does the name Sliders have to do with a small hamburger?

There is considerable evidence that “slider” was a term used for a hamburger in the United States Navy, perhaps as early as the 1940s or 1950s. The term “slider” meant a greasy burger that slid in easily. A “slider with a lid” was a cheeseburger.
