Under normal circumstances, I would be going to a store to learn more, but that always takes forever and I am avoiding long, indoor contact with people I do not know. I am not at all tech savvy — as you will see by the following questions.

Question #1: I now have an Android, but if I get an Apple Watch, will I have to get an iPhone to work with it?

Question #2: If I have to get an iPhone, will everything transfer from my current Android?

Question #3: Which Apple Watch would you suggest? What are the differences?

Question #4: If I have to get an iPhone, which one would you suggest?

Question #5: What could all this cost? Is there a price range?

Thanks.

It took 20 seconds with internet search. No. While you can use a cellular Apple Watch while using an Android phone, the watch won't pair to the phone, so they won't exchange data.Sep 22, 2020
Since your technology challenged stick with an analog or digital watch.

Boomer,

Q1. Why the interest in an Apple Watch? Is there a particular feature or function that interests you?

Q2. You mention that you have an Android. Is that an Android phone or watch?

Q3. If Q2 answer is a phone, how old is the phone?

Q4. What is your budget. Normally, nothing with an Apple logo on it will be cheap.

20 seconds? Analog? And a superiority dance to boot? But. But. But. I now have reasons for getting an Apple Watch. But I am not allowed because I am too stupid???

And, btw, I almost prefaced my questions by saying that I know that they are “dumb” but do not mock me. And, sure enough, it happened immediately.

Also, I know how to do an internet search. I have noticed lately though that is the stock, condescending answer that gets thrown at someone here who is just asking a question.

I have taught research. But there are times when I prefer anecdotal answers — and TOTV used to be the place to find that. But, still, I know there has to be someone here who will help me by synthesizing the information I want by generously sharing their knowledge. (Yes. There are fewer of us now. Too many others waiting to pounce.)

There is an insidious toxicity that shows up, more and more, in even the most innocent of threads. I really do need to stop looking at TOTV. Old habit that used to be fun. (sigh)

Sincerely,
Boomerosaurus

Under normal circumstances, I would be going to a store to learn more, but that always takes forever and I am avoiding long, indoor contact with people I do not know. I am not at all tech savvy — as you will see by the following questions.

Question #1: I now have an Android, but if I get an Apple Watch, will I have to get an iPhone to work with it? NO, except as just a watch.

Question #2: If I have to get an iPhone, will everything transfer from my current Android? Sort of, Maybe. Nothing will transfer automatically. You may need some help but your email should transfer over. You will have to install the Apple versions of your apps (if there is one) or install similar apps. Subscriptions my be a problem, you may have to cancel an Android app subscription and get a new one. This kind of question is best to ask at the store. The Apple store can help to do these transfers.

Question #3: Which Apple Watch would you suggest? What are the differences?
Current (Model 6), aluminum case. 45mm version is larger and easier to read.

Case material is different, aluminum is cheapest. Features are the same. The current version has an always-on display so that it is immediately visible. The current watch tracks heartbeat, blood oxygen levels, EKG. Notifies of an unusual heartbeat. If you get the LTE model you can make a 911 call on your watch even if you don't have your phone with you. It tracks how well you sleep.

Question #4: If I have to get an iPhone, which one would you suggest?
Might as well get the latest, iPhone 12. Bigger ones are easier to read. All have outstanding cameras though there are some differences between them. Not sure if the small, iPhone Mini has all the features that the other models do.

Question #5: What could all this cost? Is there a price range?

Right now the Apple store is undergoing a change so I can't look up prices. But off the top of my head watch is $400 (for least expensive Model 6), iPhone $600 - $1400 depending on iPhone size and memory. But check the prices for yourself to be sure.

Thanks.

Have you considered getting a smart watch that pairs with android? Having used both technologies I find I much prefer the android.

Q#1, I have had no luck getting Android and Apple products to pay nice with each other, IMHO, you would probably need to get a new phone.
Q#2, This will depend on how good the tech is at the phone store, I would go to your service supplier and ask this question directly. We have had problems every time we have changed phones, if we did NOT use the company approved cloud storage.
Q#3 to #5, I cannot help with these, good luck with your quest.

Boomer,

1: I specifically want some of the fitness things that are on there. I know I can get that elsewhere but an Apple Watch has been recommended for its ability to better monitor.

While I sometimes look at the internet on my phone, it is only to read. I never use my phone to do anything money-related. When I do that, I have to be in my house, plugged in to my laptop. I just do not like the idea of handling money on something I can lose. I know a lot of people think that is archaic of me. I can check a stock price on my phone but I would never make a stock-move on my phone. I do not access my own accounts via phone.

2 and 3: It is an Android phone. Years ago, I started with that kind and just never switched, even when replacing. It is a Samsung - about 4 years old. (It is not the one that was setting people's pants on fire though.)

I wish I had switched to an iPhone last time but I did not. I do not live on my phone. I mainly talk and text and take pictures, read a little internet and my Kindle downloads, if I do not have my kindle with me. When I am on TOTV, I am on either my iPad or my laptop which is a Surface Pro. I prefer the iPad.

4. I can make the switch to an iPhone if necessary to get the Apple watch. But I tend not to make tech a spending priority.

I have been tempted by the big-sized iPhones I see, but, although this might sound silly, my Android fits perfectly in a side-zip pocket of my purse.

Thank you for trying to help.

I have an iPhone and recently purchased a Garmin smartwatch. It pairs with everything on an Android phone and some things on an iPhone. I can't make/receive calls on my watch or read emails. I do get text notifications and other notices from my iPhone. It also indicates, by vibrating, who is calling when the phone rings and lists the name and phone number. It does pair with the Apple health app. I purchased the Garmin because, at the time of purchase, it did more things than the Apple watch and it included a golf function. The new Apple watch now does the few things that were missing when I made my purchase (it still doesn't have the golf function). I purchased the Garmin Vivoactive 4s and needed to download and print the entire manual in order to use my watch to its fullest capabilities.

If you don’t mind getting an older generation watch and phone, there are some good deals to be had on both the watch and phone at swappa.com. I would go with an iPhone X and a series 5 watch. You should be able to get both for around $750. I’ve bought several phones on swappa and have also sold some there. Never had any issues. I would be glad to look at any offers that you find.

There is an Apple Users Group that has some impressive, knowledgeable leaders and members. If you have Apple products at any level it is an organization that is worth joining for 10 bucks a year. www.https://www.tvaug.org/

1. There are 2 types of watch, one with cellular (more expensive) and one without. You can buy a data plan for the cellular one. With the non cellular you really need your phone with you when you are outside a WiFi area. At your home or say at the gym where there is WiFi you don’t need the phone in range. Overall it’s a better experience with an iPhone.

2. There is an Android app in the Play Store - “Move to IOS,” - look at it and see what it transfers.

3. Always get the latest. Watch version 6 right now. Then depending on your wrist size get the largest that fits - 40mm or 44mm face size.

4. Again get the latest. Personally I’d look at the iPhone 12 mini purely as it’s a little bit smaller as I don’t do much on the phone. I use my iPad for almost everything at home. If you can change carriers and bring them a new line you’ll usually get $250 off a new phone. We went to Xfinity mobile and got that deal.

5. Apple Watch around $400 - you’ll probably get $40 to $60 off on Black Friday.

We have had iPads since the second version and love them but the Apple Watch is an absolutely fascinating gadget. We bought primarily for the exercise functions but it’s so much more.

I have an Apple Watch, Boomer. I like it so much I leave my a Tag Heuer (a gift) in its box. Why? Because I like Apple’s functions. You do need an iPhone to synchronize it to. I got the cellular one because you can go walking with it or swimming and the watch works without the phone. You can call for help on your watch some ways from shore while you’re in the ocean as long as there are signal towers near by. You can call for help if you fall at home in the bath tub etc. You can text 911 if there is home invasion. The watch vibrates your wrist if you get a phone call or a text, or a reminder or whatever notification you want. This can be a nuisance when you are driving so you can turn it off. You may want to check out with AT&T (or whoever you want to use) how much the monthly fees are for what you want to use the phone and the watch for.

I never had android phone but hubby did and he said he had to start over on the iPhone but this was years ago.

I got the stainless steel watch because I use the watch constantly. The only time I take the watch off is to recharge the battery for 30 min a day. My iPhone has the largest memory possible because I take a lot of photos for art. Memory is expensive you may or may not want it. I have the bigger iPhone because it is easier to read, but for most things like reading recipes in the kitchen or writing on TOTV forum etc I use an iPad Pro as it has the large screen. It is always with me. Twice a year I might need to use a computer for something.

What I suggest is look at what you would like to use the phone and watch for and only buy those functions. So go for the cheapest of what you need. My favorite band for the watch is the Nike band because it likes water and it has holes so the skin can breathe. The colors from Apple are funky so I bought my own dove grey band not sold in the Apple store. It takes 5 seconds to change the band to leather when you want to look a bit dressier.

Prices for all products should be available at the Apple store if you Google it. Apple has wonderful tech support, they will get everything going for you all you have to do is call them they can do it remotely.

I do not use face recognition or finger print because I consider them invasion of privacy. You may not be such a stick in the mud though. Just letting you know. Got my first iPhone in 1998 I still have it and I have every series of Apple Watch except the most recent one because I don’t like the watch’s digital face being on all the time.

I just read through all of these helpful posts and got some answers I need.

(Velvet, I, too, am a “stick in the mud” about privacy. And I sure don’t want facial recognition. It’s bad enough when I have to recognize my own face on my phone when I start to take a picture and startle myself when I realize I have flipped the camera. This is especially horrifying if I am looking down at whatever I was trying to photograph. I assume fingerprinting and facial recognition can be turned off. Is that correct?)

My main concern about the transferring from Android has been that I don’t want to lose my pictures and/or my contacts.

I know I would like a big screen, even though the bigger screened iPhone would not fit in that convenient side pocket, with its own zipper, that is on the outside of my usual purse.

Thank you to all of you for the help you took the time to give me.

Boomer

If you have the previous series of watch - Series 5 - this has the always on feature as has the latest Series 6 watch.

This is the feature that, when introduced on the Series 5, was the decider for me to buy one.

However, it can be turned off.

The watch has Siri, you can talk to the watch. I know what you mean, hard to read text or see photos on the watch. My watch counts steps and exercise minutes that I set and gets very excited when I meet my set goal. Even more excited than hubby.

If you’re intent on getting a Smart watch, instead of buying an Apple phone, just get a Samsung watch instead. Samsung is not anal like Apple, who will make you pay a lot for even the slightest item. Also, Samsung gives you more options while Apple doesn’t even allow functions that would cost nothing on Android or charge you for them.

Some Apple watches have their own cellular connection. I bought one for my wife, who is non technical and she loves it. Checks her sleep, has instant 2 way talk and she can answer her phone with the watch.

I have always found the Apple customer service to be EXCELLENT. They answer every question i have fully, professionally and friendly, even the ones I feel make me look technologically un-savvy, though I am not, i may just not know that specific product. Yes, you will find some reps better than others, but I’ve never had one who didn’t know their product.

Apple watches will tell time, track distance and do some other apps without an Iphone paired. But if you want phone and watch to work together such as answering phone on watch or store health history you nned an Apple phone. I have had 3 watches, they are great - but if you are wanting for distance sports or all day tracking - their battery life is low. Get a Garmin.
If you buy a watch from Apple on line, you will always get the latest model. If you buy from store, they might have newest model and the model before, if a new release of watches just came out. The previous model might be discounted a little. Apple tends to set prices so any lower price variance is absorbed by the store.
Apple has a great website and help support for data support and new phone start up. They can help you move data from Android. If it can be done - they will tell you how. Just search or ask on line.
Apple works the best if you use Apple products - Macbook, phone, watch for all of them to sync n share info — also Apple family members for file and photo share, Facetime etc.

Ok great question, I have a Apple 7 Plus phone and a Apple 3rd generation watch, they are great, left the Android world many years ago to a much better platform (my opinion). Store the information on the cloud and yes you can transfer it to the Apple system. I would NOT get anything lower than an Apple 7 or a Gen 3 watch you can find those new phone $300 or watch $250 today, I would NOT purchase used or refurbished. The Apple technology is on my opinion far better than Android and more difficult to hack although not impossible. I have been an Apple user for now 15 years and before I used and taught Android systems for many years until I saw “the light” Now I have in my household 100% Apple including a Mac computer, 2 IPads, 2 Apple phones and 1 Apple Watch. Google the difference.

20 seconds?

PS: (I am far too nice to point out the fact that you need to revisit the use of your/you’re.)

Welcome to TOTV! I was very annoyed by such a condescending response. People who are book smart but have no manners or common sense abound here. Ignore the inconsiderate buffoons and know-it-alls.

I love my Apple Watch (11 Pro Max) and Apple Watch. However, if you like your Android phone, purchase a Fit Bit. Works well with all watches and does the same thing. It’s a great fitness watch and you can load 300 songs on it as well.

I love my Apple Watch since it does pair with my iPhone. Can answer my phone with it and read texts. Lots of extra apps on it to track my walking, pulse rate. Newer ones are waterproof to a degree if you’re a swimmer... the older models can be much cheaper.

I couldn't agree more, and thanks for taking the time to give Dana1963 an earful. I love your (see: some of us can get this correct) phrase "insidious toxicity", which perfectly captures what I like the least about what social media has degenerated into, and the main reason why I spend less and less time "enjoying" it.

As for your actual question, I've found it best to go all in with either the Apple or Android ecosystems. For various reasons most of my family and I have chosen to sell our online souls to Apple rather than Google, but really they both have their good points and bad.

I currently own an Apple 12 Pro, which is the largest (6.1") and most expensive ($1000) iPhone that I've ever owned, but it has the best camera they currently offer which was the feature which sold it to me. On the other end of the spectrum, my son is quite happy with the smallest and least expensive (~$400, IIRC) iPhone, which he uses.

In any event, I hope that you're happy with whatever choice you make, and that if it is an Apple watch that is suits whatever requirement lead you to look in that direction in the first place.

Even though I have lived in The Villages for almost seven years, I have never posted on TOTV, but I do enjoy reading it daily. This is a topic I can help with, so decided to post.

Both Android and iOS have awesome features and hardware, including phones, tablets, and watches; I personally prefer iOS, and have had iPhones, Apple Watches, and iPads for years.

If you want an Apple Watch, YOU MUST have an iPhone. Period. Yes, there are cellular versions of the Apple Watch, but you have to have an iPhone to set up Apple Watch, install updates, sync text messages, email, notifications, etc. There are rumors of a stand-alone-Apple Watch in the future, but there is not one available yet.

It’s always best to get the most updated version of technology possible as it gets outdated so quickly. Go to Apple’s Website (sorry, I’m not allowed to post links), choose iPhone, then compare models. The new iPhone 12 would be an excellent choice, but the iPhone 11 is still a good choice. You’ll also be able to compare pricing.

For the Apple Watch, you are better off to get the Series 6 or Series SE... the Series 3 is getting outdated. If you want all the Health Features, you’ll need the Series 6. If not, the SE is a very good choice. Again, Apple’s Website will allow you to compare features and pricing. Size-wise, most Men get the 44mm version, most Women the 40mm, but plenty of Men with small frames like the 40mm version, and Women with larger wrists or who want a larger Watch Face get the 44mm. Personal preference.

To make the switch from Android, it will be complicated but doable. Both Apple iOS and Android OS have apps to help with that transition. Call Apple (800) 692-7753 to get their advice, or talk to your Cellular Carrier to see if they can help you transfer everything from your Android phone. As previously mentioned, The Villages Apple User Group is an excellent resource. Contact them to see if they can recommend someone to help you make the transition.

Hope this helps. Good luck... let us know how it goes!

It took 20 seconds with internet search. No. While you can use a cellular Apple Watch while using an Android phone, the watch won't pair to the phone, so they won't exchange data.Sep 22, 2020
Since your technology challenged stick with an analog or digital watch.

Wow, that was rude.
And btw, it's "you're".

Thanks.

Boomer

I used to have android phone, then got Apple, then I watch. I do really like the apple products more. The latest I watch, series 6, has the bloodOx reading capability. Lots of chatter about that since Covid. They start at $399. An iPhone will sync with the watch on most all apps. Including text, and phone calls. Worth it. iPhone 11 or now the just released 12 start at $600. Purchasing through your carrier, like Verizon for example, or Best Buy, an authorized Apple retailer, allows 0% financing in your monthly bill. And may have specials, discounts, or Black Friday! Good luck!

I am a swimmer, but why would I need an apple watch to make my swim better. I count the laps I swim. 72 is a mile, 90 is a mile and a quarter, and 108 is a mile and a half. What more information do I need while swimming laps??? If the watch could tell me that lightning is about to strike the pool, and I need to get out ASAP, then I will get one.

I am an all Apple user. You may wish to contact Apple Support to answer your questions. They will certainly know about any compatibility questions. Not sure if they will be able to discuss cost. As far as what model to get, my belief is get the most up to date model you can afford so you have longevity of the product and support. Good luck.

If enough people ask, there will be an app developed for that too. :)

Although my swimming/pool lap triathlon training is a thing of the past I have used the Apple watch to occasionally swim in the pool. I love it I preset the pool distance and it records the number of laps. Beats counting on my fingers or tapping a button my Timex Ironman Triathlon watch to count laps. So far as thunder/lightening when I hear the first boom I get out of the pool, I don't need an app to do that. Oh wait I have a built in app it's called common sense.

Dear TOTVers,

I regret responding as I did to Dana1963. I did it because I do not respond well when I think I have been treated in a condescending manner. It was not just about me though. I was speaking up against what I see so much of here on TOTV. I should have ignored the comment but I took it on as a “cause” to call attention to the fact that TOTV could use an overall attitude adjustment.

But, in fairness to Dana1963, that response to me might have been just a quick, flippant remark like we all probably have written at some point or another. I have not seen Dana1963 as someone who has established a pattern of such behavior. But there are plenty of others. (I recently edited out a response of my own in a different thread. I decided it was not worth calling out what I saw between the lines there. It felt good to write it, but then I made it disappear.)

I also regret being snarky about grammar. That remark of mine was obnoxious.

And then there is the thing that happened here this morning when my thread — just trying to learn about Apple watches — was turned into a thread for harboring political attacks. . .

To the person who made the remark bashing Dana as the “left” — you would not like me either. I was once of your party but gave it up because this is not the party I once knew and has not been for a while.

What I see now is a display of behavior that has nothing to do with loving America and is showing signs of risking our national security — from both inside and outside enemies. I keep hoping that people will remember their own critical thinking skills, turn off the dysinformation, and finally have an AHA! moment.

I am thinking of asking the moderator to close this thread. I am nobody’s pawn. I started the thread and it was not for those who don’t miss a beat for sneaking in their personal political agenda to pollute any discussion.

Now that I have responded — not only about the general toxicity that permeates TOTV — but also having waded right into my own political views — it has definitely gone political.

Before I leave, I want to say to Dana that I should have ignored what you posted, and that I wish I had cut you some slack. And I am sorry I was obnoxious about your/you’re.

My guess is you know better but you trusted spellcheck. I was an English teacher for 35 years and when computers came along, I tried to pound into my students’ heads — “Spellcheck? Use it but DO NOT trust it!” We would laugh about it because I would do the old “Repeat after me” routine. (I wonder if any of them can still hear me making them do that.)

Well, this is getting really long and beginning to look like a manifesto so I need to wrap it up by saying thank you to all who tried to help me. I will be getting a new phone and an Apple watch. :)

Sincerely and hopefully,
Boomer (exit stage left)

Good questions but I don't have the answers. Here's a site we regularly use to help decide on purchasing $$$ items. Wirecutter: New Product Reviews, Deals, and Buying Advice (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/) There's usually a lot to read at this site but worthwhile. I have frequently thought about purchasing a specific item, then read their reviews & realize there are aspects of the purchase I hadn't considered but wirecutter had considered. Hope your research is done in time for an Xmas gift. :)

I'm a former swimmer, and the apple watch will give you times for your splits, etc. If you're just swimming laps and don't time yourself for various distances, and like counting laps, then you probably don't need a watch. I used to do sets of 100 yards on various time intervals for example, so the watch would really come in handy. Or I might swim a 500 at race pace and want to know my splits on each 100. We all have different needs.

I love my Apple watch.
You just have to make sure you hibernate for the night the features that
tell you to breathe and especially to stand up.
Do not want that waking you up at 3 a.m. ☺️
