View Full Version : Store shelves empty of paper products AGAIN!

What has happened in the last week that has prompted a rush once again on paper products? Store shelves in Target and Colony Publix are nearly empty once again of toilet paper and paper towels. Those are the only two stores I've been to in the past week (yesterday) but I'm afraid that is becoming a trend and we will see wide spread hoarding again. Hurricane season is just about over. So....just wondering why empty shelves again?

I understand the issue is hoarding but, my original post was to figure out why the hoarding AGAIN? I honestly do not think it is a supply issue because why, all of a sudden, would there be a supply issue?

I just read read on another thread that some of the stores are limiting capacity again due to the pandemic kicking up into high gear. Now I understand the reason for the hoarding.

Because this:

Dr. Michael Osterholm, a coronavirus advisor to President-elect Joe Biden, said a nationwide lockdown would help bring the virus under control in the U.S.

Biden Covid advisor says U.S. lockdown of 4 to 6 weeks could control pandemic and revive economy (https://www.cnbc.com/2020/11/11/biden-covid-advisor-says-us-lockdown-of-4-to-6-weeks-could-control-pandemic-and-revive-economy.html)

Of course that was 4 days ago and when they saw that it went over like a lead balloon, they've been frantically backpedaling for the past 48 hours.

Believe it or not toilet paper and paper towel shortages started showing strain in August according to producers' demand was up about 16% in some areas of the nation. Supply chains adjust accordingly supplying those areas.

Uh - it was Hurricane Etta, we were expecting a pretty nasty storm coming at the edge of that. Shelves were mostly stocked up yesterday just fine at Publix. There HAVE been some empty spots ever since the initial Pandemic closings in March/April - they were never back up to full. But now they're pretty much the same as they usually are when you're expecting a huge storm the next day.

Not a big deal. Maybe they're empty of the brand YOU prefer - so pick a different brand. There's plenty available.

Gladly we didn't see any of that strain here in The Villages' stores, not that I noticed, anyway. Seems to me the shelves have been completely stocked at all times for several months...............until now.

No, not my intent at all to cause a slight panic; just stating the facts of what I saw. Let me give you a percentage of the empty shelves......90% empty. That to me is "nearly empty".

Despite the expiration date that your toilet paper company lists on the packaging of your toilet paper, the product lasts for much longer than you may expect. As long as you don't get the toilet paper wet or allow dust and dirt to get into the packaging of your toilet paper, the product can last years or even decades.

When so n so said lockdown then the buying began. Also made mention when he got in office, might shutdown until vaccine is out. Many Restaurants won’t make it through another long lockdown. He said indoors/outdoors a mask mandate will be in place. Can’t eat with a mask on. We will see what happens. Hey folks it’s starting in lots of states with paper products. Nothing to do with the storm!

Heard on Fox News that because of the Biden win, everyone is worried about another nationwide lockdown. They reported that large grocery chains like Kroger are imposing rationing of paper products, cleaning supplies, meat, etc.

I was at the 466a Aldi a week ago and they had their signs up---"take one of each only" of paper-goods. BUT seemed to have plenty. I'd heard maybe 2 weeks ago that people were stocking up at SAM's...as in a hurricane or whatever, is coming. But went to Neighborhood Walmart and there was more than enough there and people didn't seem to be in the hoarding mind-set. Maybe it's when rumors start and people get the crowd-effect and begin doing it....or maybe if the shelves are empty it's a warehouse issue and not a store issue. There is a trickle down effect before it hits the consumer.

My best guess is that the media is saying that there have been more cases of Covid-19 and everyone is running to stock up on things. We know now that the eighteen wheelers and their drivers are out there bringing goods to groceries, so I doubt it will be the delay it was before.

We will do what we have always done and get through this. I wonder at why people's first reaction is to be mad at other people and call them names??

After going through the paper towels and toilet paper shortages before, you should have gradually stocked up on those items, other critical items, and quit living “hand to mouth”. We gradually stocked up on the critical items when they became available again. After being burned once by temporary shortages, we weren’t going to be burned again.

You should also fill up your gas tank when you get down to half full. Don’t wait till the gas tank is empty. When the rioting, looting, and arson occurred in Minnesota, the gas stations started closing, due to “social unrest”. People that let their gas tank get to empty, were simply out of luck, when they couldn’t buy gas.

Our oldest lives in St Paul, looting was few blocks away from their neighborhood. They mostly use public transportation, or walk, as do many in ST Paul.

Didn’t have any issues with gas, for their auto, but it took 3 weeks for TJ’s to open back up. Longer for the mom and pop stores. As for paper products a neighbor down the street brought in pallets stored in his garage, while his shop was closed. Garage shopping was quick and easy

Photo #10 Now I see them (kinda blended in with the background). While I'm not gonna picks nits on the number of rolls or if it's TP and paper towels or how large the crowd size is in the closet, yes, I do see some. Doesn't quite look like "well over a hundred" but that could likely be a major selling point of the house. Considering what TP was selling for on eBay last spring (up to $5/roll) it could have been an investment for their grand-kids college. Maybe during their next open house we can ask for an audit. ;) This thread is really going down the sh1tter.

I've been in tech for all of my adult life 35+ years. I worked in the medical field in the 90s and I now work industrial. I also do video production and have been into digital cameras and amateur photography for the past 20 years. Oh and I grew up on a farm, built, repaired and raced cars up through college. Inserting one photo into another in Photoshop is something I do probably 3 times a day at least :). Doing a 4 camera shoot of my buddy's Dodge Hellcat in the Nevada desert is on my to-do list this next year. It will be a joy to spend weeks editing all that footage. I say all this only to cement the idea that my technology experience is hard won :)

I prefer paper towels, but I agree.

I would also say the same for any bathroom with a shower. You CAN survive without paper. I did a work trip to China in 2003, and only the hotels had western toilets. Everywhere else had the hose, the bucket, the rag and the squat toilet hole.

I still don't quite understand it even though I've been to a number of third world countries since then.

The only thing that comes to mind is that you take the hose with the spray nozzle, whilst squatting and fire it backwards through the, uhm, problem spot. This would splatter the back wall of the stall with debris(watch out for backsplash). When finished you hose down the wall, and dry with the towel. The bucket is there for short people to stand on. ;)

Thank you for making me feel not so tech challenged. :)

Just saw empty store shelves on NBC's The Today Show. I guess the cat is out of the bag now.

NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX are all good at creating bad news and panic.

Buy some wash rags and wash and reuse them. Problem solved.

I have a large kitchen drawer filled with old towels that I open and use EVERY DAY. I use them to wipe off, mop up, cover couches from cat hair..(The cats always choose to sit on a chair or couch without the old towel) I use them for ALL kinds of things. I will dampen them and wipe around the floor between floor washings. They are the old fashioned way to save trees and energy. P.S. Yes the globe is warming....I just don't think we have any answers to throw money at yet.

Unfortunately they are only reporting FACTS.

Installed a bidet and love it. Check out the info on the web. Simple to install.

i was curious how that works? does it use 'clean' water, or the non-potable kind we water lawns with?

They tie in directly to the toilet supply water which is the same as the rest of the water in your house.

Now I see them (kinda blended in with the background).
:ho:

Masala said they are 6 packs of 6 paper towels. Look closer , they are 6 packs of 8 jumbo towels , that are visible. I'm sure that anyone that hoards that many also is hoarding equal toilet paper somewhere.

By choice choosing to ignore informative, calming, reassuring information!!!

Their so called reporting is nothing more than special interest messaging.

In my humble opinion.

Winn Dixie at LSL was loaded this afternoon with everything you could want from TP to PT to hand sanitizer. They even has BOGO TP. So things ain't that drastic (yet). Just watch what you eat and stay away from Taco Bell. :D

While in Orlando Monday stopped into a Publix , the shelves were filled with paper products and yesterday did the same thing while in Ocala the shelves were filled there also, I didn’t buy any I didn’t need any . I guess the villages with the large amounts of guns and ammo and plenty of paper towels and toilet paper is ready for the those hordes of urban rabble who are coming to take over

I live in a conservative area and our shelves are still nicely stocked. My guess is some loony tune lefties are trying to mess with the folks in The Villages. People can be jerks sometimes.

Nope, not this thread, look at who OP is in the first place.

As they will continue to do over the next four years.

On Saturday, 11/21, went to Leesburg Walmart, Colony Publix, and Walmart Market for various things only each store had. No TP and very little paper towel at any store. Laughable how easily people can be fooled and panicked. Then again...

Has anyone ever been to a pizza restaurant and been told that they are out of Pizza crust? I have, and the restaurant manager said that it does happen every once in a while. Random demand and occasional delivery delays can cause inventory to be temporarily. With storms, and employees out sick, etc. . . a random store out of product is not unusual. Up here in MA, there are stores very low on TP and PT, but those are the big box stores, and the supermarkets have plenty, although a higher price.

Also, there is a seasonal migration, there are many more remote workers who might just take advantage of the environment, and spend the winter instead of renting, and then there are stores that manage the inventory day to day.

So there may not be just one "satisfying" answer, but there may be a combination of reasons, which results in a store being out whereas others are not.

The world is not linear and singular in events

The shelves weren't full today at Walmart but they aren't ever full. A few of the empty spots were a little wider than usual, but there were plenty of options. Two different generic store brands in 3 different sizes, plus Angel Soft, and Charmin, and Scott, and Northern, and that other brand I get sometimes and can't ever remember the name.

I got a 9-pack of the Walmart brand ultra-mega-super-duper-size-roll (in the standard soft, not ultra soft or sandpaper crispy) for around $6, same as they always are. There were 4 more packs of that on the shelf. I didn't check the paper towels since I still have plenty.

From what folks have been reporting here, it sounds like the problem is not nearly as bad as it was the first time around.
