I love classic rock and always will. But I want to find an alternative (or two or three) that I will still enjoy and will seem fresh to me. It can be rock (just not constant classic rock), or other styles of music. It would be nice if it was somewhat current. I'd like to listen to music that is fairly new, but I'm not eliminating any genres. Heck, I even listen to a little classical on occasion. :D
Ideally I'd like to find a playlist, station or something similar on Amazon Music Unlimited. But I would consider other alternatives.
Your thoughts and ideas are appreciated.

Classic rock and prog are my first loves, but in the late '70s and '80s, I developed a serious appreciation of punk and post punk. To this day, I still follow bands in that vein. So in my opinion, the best current and relatively new ish bands that can be more or less traced back to that category include Interpol, the Editors, the National, War on Drugs, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes (more like folk prog) and the Killers. To the untrained ear, they probably just sound like mellow rock that's a bit more intricate. Happy listening!

I love classic rock. I love most of the 70s and 80s rock. I love some of the 90s rock. I've just heard it SO MUCH. My favorite band is Tool and his side projects like A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.
So when I heard some stuff on XM some years ago, I found it compelling and dug a bit deeper. I'll probably get crucified here, but I found some really funky stuff that I think is great. It's specially great for long drives to/from FL.
There is a youtube Channel where the guy makes mixes of this stuff. It's Dub step, chill step, psybient, etc. It's just stuff you've never heard before and my wife hates it ;). The dude has hours and hours of it. Before you click on the link, let me get out of here so I can avoid the daggers coming at me :) Click on the guy's youtube channel and there's a ton more. It's not my channel. Ott Mix - Psybient / Dub - 432 Hz Download Link - YouTube (https://youtu.be/cW1TJ5dvmik)

I'll posit that there is no "alternative" to classic rock. Or, possibly, ALL music that isn't classic rock, is an alternative to classic rock.
I mean, it's kind of a weird question, if you think about it. Jazz is absolutely an alternative to classic rock. So is opera. And so is Tuvan throat singing (which I personally believe everyone capable of hearing, should hear at least once in their lives: Tuvan Throat Singing - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qx8hrhBZJ98) )
I think I get stuck on the word "alternative." The implied question, by using that word is: What music is not classic rock? The answer is: everything else.

I have XM Sirius in my car, so I can jump from Ozzy's Boneyard, to Classic rock, to New Wave, the Cassette Years, Yacht Rock, Alt Nation to The Bridge. I have about 15 preset on XM that I jump around to all the time. Mostly just different forms of rock just a button apart.
When I'm at home I have a radio in the garage and one on the lanai. I listen to over-the-air stations. Orlando Sunny FM 104.5 plays only the 80's anything from Van Halen to Madonna, if was a hit in the 80's they play it.
WKTK might be what you're looking for, 98.5 Gainesville. They play only classic rock and new. I just found them last week, they were playing Aerosmith and the next song was Adelle, they're all over the map.
Another is US 102.3 Gainesville, they play southern rock and country. When you listen, it's really not a lot different. You'll hear Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet, Tom Petty and then Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, whatever is current, they seem to all blend together.
In the house I have a 75" Smart TV and a killer surround sound all connected to the internet and paired to the youtube.com website. I use to collect concert DVD's and have about 300, although I haven't played any in years because I discovered youtube.com website. In the past ten years I've collected about 8,000 mostly live videos from every style, from soul, to disco, to every form of rock and various themes. Such as then and now, oldies still touring, bands I've seen, bands at the Savannah Center or the Sharon, any kind of idea I make a folder and have about 45 different ones. Right now I'm in tribute bands, I have about 5 folders and about 1500 videos of just tribute bands. I play for my wife and me every Friday night about 3 hours of music, and try to add about 30 or 40 new ones each week.
Here's a link to my llbrary on youtube, you'll need to scroll down past history and watch later, and you'll see about 20 folders, then click show more to see them all. You might have to log on, I'm not sure since I'm always logged on. Just pair your TV via the internet and you've have a concert on TV that was free.

You can go to Pandora or you tube ( free versions) and type in a bands name and they will play you a few of their songs and several more of similar genre. If you put a few names in you tube you will get a dozen or so and they will keep recommending songs.
I’m a hard rocker but my wife and I found a station on Sirius called Sirius XMU, the music is referred to as “Indie” referring to Independent or pre-label bands. Kind of bound to be Alternative bands.
Some previous graduates of this category: Arcade Fire, Artic Monkeys, The Cure, Death Cab for Cutie, Black Keys.
I think if you listened to “Royals” by Lorde and 10,000 Emerald Polls by Borns you get a general idea of the music style.
Note, you can also set up a radio station in Pandora and call it Indie and it will pick songs for you.
I find it soothing and melodious, I love listening to it, it’s a happy medium as my wife finds my Zeppelin to Metallica a little harsh, aka” scratchy music”

Try Western Swing. Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys are the most famous band in the genre, but among those currently performing, my favorites are Hot Club of Cowtown and Asleep at the Wheel.
Try Western/Cowboy music. You have to hear the band Riders in the Sky.
Try Gypsy Jazz or Gypsy Swing. Start with Django Reinhardt, one of the greatest guitarists ever. There are a lot of real gypsies still performing this in Europe. In the U.S., my favorite is the Hot Club of San Francisco. And try Pink Martini, too. They sing in a variety of languages.
Swing! I loved The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Tom Waits, and then I bought a record called Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook. I fell in love with the beautiful melodies, the witty lyrics, and of course the way they swing. She recorded a lot of great “Songbook” albums. This is your American heritage! This is what the troops loved when they fought in World War II. It’s called The Great American Songbook.
Choro. From Brazil, it is the parent of Bossa Nova. It’s a little like bluegrass and jazz meeting European 19th century polka and classical music. Start with the great mandolinist Jacob do Bandolim. Seriously fun music.

I am regularly made fun of by my musically challenged buddies because of my "eclectic taste", but just like you, I love all music. Get Spotify and look me up. brewingtondan is my id and you will be able to see all the playlists I have created. The Spotify Discover Weekly is a wonderful thing for getting new stuff. In the interim, check out the Screemin Cheetah Wheelies and anything Mike Farris has done on his own, especially Salvation in Lights album. I am a board member of The Villages Blues Society as well. Check us out at The Villages Blues Society - Home (https://thevillagesblues.com/) We see some tremendous live music brought right here to the Villages.

Hmm. Everybody else seems to understand what the op meant, and provide very good feedback. But then you have a gift for over-complicating almost every topic, so...mission accomplished.
By the way, Davonu, Amazon Music has a station called “Top Alternative”. It’s actually pretty good. :) (Just a heads up...a bit explicit sometimes.)

Try modern rock. I don't like all of it but I have discovered bands like Dirty Honey, Greta Van Fleet (3 of the four are brothers including twins) they have been comped to Led Zeppelin, and The Pretty Reckless fronted by former actress Taylor Momsen, who was Jenny in Gossip Girl and Cindy Lou Who in Jim Carrey's version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Also as far as classic rockers with a new outlet, Mike Campbell, lead guitarist for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, has a new album out tomorrow with his band The Dirty Knobs. They've already released three singles from it, "Wreckless Abandon", "F*ck That Guy" and "Irish Girl".

Um, I thought the obvious answer was Alternative Rock.
Channel 36 on Sirius. 😁
The "New Alternative Rock" station on SiriusXM was pretty good for the first couple of years. Now I find it utterly unlistenable as they play what sounds to me like modern mainstream pop. Nothing alternative sounding about it all, in my opinion.
Your mileage may vary and I respect everyone's musical taste. But I think the transformation on the "alternative" station is unfortunate, as I used to love it. I've since unsaved it.
Not to worry, though, XMU plays alternative music. And for non-mainstream classic rock, Deep Tracks can't be beat.

That reminds me, in the early to mid 80's I belonged to FOPG (Friends of Peter Gabriel), his UK fan club. I had to mail a 5 pound note every year for membership to the UK and they sent me a newsletter about 4 times a year. I've seen him twice in concert, '86 and '93, you could say I was a big fan. I had every record of his his, 12" singles and picture sleeve singles, even his 3rd and 4th albums from '80 and '82 both the America and the German pressing which he sang the songs in German, very neat.
Kind of fell out of favor with him the last few years, I guess like so many others, when everyone else likes them and they became mainstream I move on. It started with the So album and the song and video to Sledgehammer. He still makes good songs, but I'm not as dedicated.
For the live album, I like his stuff from early 80's era, when Peter Gabriel Plays Live came out in '83 I played that album every night for over a year. I was hooked you could say. The US CD was only on one disc and only had 12 tracks, the double album has 16 tracks, I guess in America they figured we were not into him enough to spring for a double CD. Check out that CD is you haven't already.

What you can do is share youtube playlists. So, create a playlist or three and then share the links to those on social media.
Share a playlist - YouTube Music Help (https://support.google.com/youtubemusic/answer/9198182)
I went to the link and it said in the menu next to your playlist click share, I already had those on share, I don't know why you can't see them unless you're not logged in maybe?
There is a share selection on the videos themselves, not the whole list, and I use that a lot on other music websites, you can link the video directly and it's shown as a image with the play triangle in the middle. For some reason, that doesn't work on this website.
I'll try the link method, here's a link to my '70s playlist.

We almost always listen to current pop. On Sirius it’s 2 (New Yotk) or 11 (KISS Los Angeles). I was a music major in college and love classical and many music styles; but my whole life I’ve followed current pop. I never wanted there to be decades of music that I had no knowledge of. It seems that many people are of the opinion that it’s only for young folks, and is all rap. However, much current pop has great musicality, and relatable lyrics.
I wish we had some offerings of this in The Villages, and plan to start a club night of current pop in the future when covid restrictions are over.

This is a really good article on the state of pop music today.
Excerpt: "An astonishing amount of today’s popular music is written by two people: Lukasz Gottwald of the United States and Max Martin from Sweden, who are both responsible for dozens of songs in the top 100 charts. You can credit Max and Dr. Luke for most the hits of these stars:
Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift, Jessie J., KE$HA, Miley Cyrus, Avril Lavigne, Maroon 5, Taio Cruz, Ellie Goulding, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Ariana Grande, Justin Timberlake, Nick Minaj, Celine Dion, Bon Jovi, Usher, Adam Lambert, Justin Bieber, Domino, Pink, Pitbull, One Direction, Flo Rida, Paris Hilton, The Veronicas, R. Kelly, Zebrahead
With only two people writing much of what we hear, is it any wonder music sounds the same, using the same hooks, riffs and electric drum effects?"

Ideally I'd like to find a playlist, station or something similar on Amazon Music Unlimited. But I would consider other alternatives.
Your thoughts and ideas are appreciated.
MSB Michael Stanley Band

Best albums: You break it you bought it and Stage Pass double album recorded live at the Agora.
Lot of different slow and rock songs. It might be something you might like.

This is where I go for my classical fix at night to get to sleep peacefully, but there's a bunch of other genre they offer for free.

I wish we had some offerings of this in The Villages, and plan to start a club night of current pop in the future when covid restrictions are over.
You would really like Petrina, unfortunately she hasn't played the squares for at least 5 years. When we moved here in 2011 we would see her about once a month. She moved here from England about 15 years ago and lived with her mother. Since then, I believe she's gotten married and still lives in TV.
I believe now she plays only the country clubs, Waterfront Hotel, private parties, driveway parties and smaller groups like that. I remember when I first saw her, she sang a lot of Adelle, and this was before anyone heard of Adelle. Anything new or old pop she'll sing and she's a great entertainer. Here's her website, which should have her schedule.

That's her with the spiked blonde hair!!

I get so tired of classic Rock because all the tunes are overplayed. Deep Tracks dives into a lot of tunes you may not have heard from your favorite classic rock artists.

Why Pop Music Is So Bad These Days ~ The Imaginative Conservative (https://theimaginativeconservative.org/2019/11/why-pop-music-is-so-bad-these-days-jon-henschen.html)
My understanding is that it is to those two composers that we owe two things that are omnipresent in contemporary pop music:
1) repetitive riffs at the ends of lines that are SUNG (uh-uh-uh-u-uh-uh) instead of PLAYED. (This is why guitar, keyboard, horns aren’t often used as solo instruments in pop these days—their parts are being sung. This isn’t necessarily bad, but it is conspicuous once you are alerted to it.)
2) the use of minor scales closely associated with traditional music (and then pop music) from the Middle East, such as Turkey and Syria. (Again, this is not necessarily bad, but it is different.)

I get so tired of classic Rock because all the tunes are overplayed. Deep Tracks dives into a lot of tunes you may not have heard from your favorite classic rock artists.
I tried to fix that. When I moved here in 2011 I listened to WIND 95.5 Classic Rock Gainesville/Ocala. I noticed their playlist seemed so repetitious, in 2015 I emailed a list of about 50 songs I never heard. Hunter, who is a morning DJ and listed as their PD was who I emailed it to and she replied thanked you. I continued to listen and for the next year and heard only one song from list. I emailed a second list in 2016 and she thanked me again, but I never heard any of those songs either.
In 2017 I bought a new car with XM free for 3 months and afterwards I have kept XM Sirius membership and I really like it a lot. In garage and lanai on my other-the-air radio I've switched to several different stations I listed in post #9 and for classic rock I find WMNO 98.9 Classic Rock Orlando has a different playlist.
The only song WIND played from my two lists was Judas Priest You got another thing Coming. The other 100 or so songs I emailed were songs like this; Aldo Nova Fantasy, Billy Thorpe Children of the Son, Zebra Who's Behind the Door, Giuffria Call to the Heart, The Cult She sells Sanctuary, ELO Telephone Line, Robin Trower Victims of the Fury, Jackson Browne Somebody's Baby, Uriah Heep Easy Livin', Sweet Love is like Oxygen, The Babys Back on my feet Again, Head East Never been any Reason, Whitesnake Still of the Night to name a few.

But if you want a real change of pace, try this:
Moondog - Moondog (1969 - Full Album) - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiN-7mukU_REyKvKlRJMwGjsNCamUhqpd&ab_channel=Moondog-Topic)
Rather interesting back story if you become curious.

Ever since I saw Amadeus in the early 80's I've gotten into instrumental music, classical and soundtracks, etc. I remember buying Vivaldi Four Seasons on cassette in the 80's. Georgie Winston all his instrumental piano albums on Windham Hill, Laurie Anderson was a perfomrance artist but had a 5 album box set that I use to really dig. Phillip Glass a contemporary classic composer from Baltimore has several albums, he goes in the repetitive sound with other instruments overlaid. My favorite of his is the Photographer, especially Act II which has some nice violin work.

Try smooth jazz, and blues with great music from Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton

I guess you're referring to my youtube.com video library. Are you registered on youtube website and logged in? If so, I have it on share and you should see them. When you reach the link, you'll see 'history' and then scroll down and then 'watch later' and then the 'Playlists'. They'll be about 20 folders and click on 'show more' to see all 45.

Oh yeah. Like the op, I’ve been trying to expand my musical horizons a bit...and I’m finding more and more I really enjoy instrumental music. Classical, jazz, rock, almost any genre. Just enjoy the pure music without having to try to figure out and be distracted by lyrics.

This makes me sad. Mostly embarrassed for you. I actually -simplified- the OP's question, as opposed to over-complicating it, which is what many posters have done.
The suggestion (since you seem to have missed it, again - very sorry on your behalf) was that ALL other genres of music are alternatives to Classic Rock.
And then I even posted a specific thing for the OP to check out (and for anyone else who wanted to add to their musical experiences).
Again, so sorry that you missed the obvious and that your only contribution up to that point had to include a knee-jerk aggressive quip against me. Perhaps in time you will expand your horizons. I sincerely hope you do. It can be a wonderful experience.
You certainly haven't changed my opinion and recommendation:
ALL music that isn't Classic Rock, is an alternative to Classic Rock.
AND
You should all check out Tuvan throat singing.

Probably not the answer people are looking for, but my answer to the OP's question would be to turn off the music and listen to the sounds of nature. I love classic rock, but I am also a curmudgeon and don't like to listen to the newer stuff. Give me classic rock, or give me the peepers (frogs) chirping and the birds singing.
Whatever you do, please don't listen to any disco, or even worse RAP, neither are music.

Agree on Rap, and Disco is great for dancing - not so great for listening.
