I have a question regarding rec centers' pool etiquette which I couldn't find an answer to when I looked at the rules on line. Do you think someone playing music for all to hear is okay at rec pools? I personally would never do it and don't appreciate being subjected to it, especially when I'm looking to have peaceful read on a lounge chair by the pool. I found this happens at the beach too, even had people do it on a tennis court up north. Thoughts?

No, I don't think it is OK. There are so many good options in headphones now, keep your musical preferences to yourself.

DH uses earphones on the rare occasion he watches TV late in the lanai.

I find the music offensive and it was a large part of my decision to put in a pool. The only thing worse were the super loud talkers in the rec pool.

I too think it's inappropriate to impose your music on others. Many, including me, go there to read and do not like unnecessary sounds.

I also think it’s a selfish habit but I’d be hesitant to ask them to turn it down unless you know it’s a reasonable person you’re dealing with.

I wear earplugs when I swim. They’re very comfortable and cut out most, not all, outside noise. The ones I use are a gel-like material that come in a pack of, I think, eight pairs. They’re available in the pharm department at Publix, Walmart, CVS, etc.

Good luck.

They have to talk loud to be heard over the music.

They play the VLS radio station at the country club pool. Usually I'm fine with it, and since it's "piped in" there's really nothing you can complain about, and no one to complain to.

At the nearest rec pool, sometimes the regulars will have a radio playing, but it's never very loud. It's always a music station, never country, and never rap. So I'm fine with it.

If you are at a rec center pool, there is always someone in the rec center, you can speak to the person on duty and if they think you have a legitimate issue, they will deal with it.

And isn't ironic that the louder the music, louder the talkers which leases to louder music which leads to louder talkers. You see the cause and effect.

One of the many reason I put in a pool. Loud talking about illnesses, where to eat, and politics kept me from enjoying a leisurely read and occasional dip.

It's interesting how some people feel they can do what they want without regard for others. I often think if I'm ever alone in the pool I would play my portable BT - I have never done it however - even if I am the only one there. This person should not be doing it either.

I don't care for loud music or talkers either at the pools. Since so many seem to feel that way maybe it would be a useful idea for TV to designate some pools as "quiet pools" just like they designate some as "family" or "sports" pools.

On kids in neighborhood pools, it may be visitors that don't know the rules and should be referred to the nearest rec pool for families.

I agree with you that it is inappropriate to play your own music for all to hear at the pool. We might even say it is rude. I don’t even like to hear music over the pool’s P.A. system unless it’s from before 1980 and I happen to really like the band. I enjoy silence a lot. It’s possible that some listeners associate having their own music at the pool with their childhood memories of being at the pool with their little transistor radio and the hit parade, back when the world was young. Or perhaps they did that at the beach or the shore.

My favorite music at the pool memory was when “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” came out in 1967. (My last summer at the pool—after that I had to work every summer.) The radio station we favored played the album for 24 hours with no advertising, over and over. It showed me new possibilities for music. (Of course, there were many more possibilities I would learn about later.)

I remember when “Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m 64” seemed impossibly far in the future. Now it’s in the past.

Then the question becomes "what is 'loud' music?"

Also, should loud 'talking' be banned too?

I'd much prefer listening to any type of music rather than a group of 6 or 7 people talking over each other complaining about their aches, pains, the weather, grandchildren etc...

As is usually the case, there's no one size fits all solution that will make everyone happy. Just try to show a little respect for those around you and if someone is too loud perhaps simply asking them to tone it down a bit is all that is needed for everyone to enjoy themselves.

There’s a lot of pools in TV. I would just go to another pool. Being a Billiard player, one day a week we played at Canal or Bogart & Beetlemania played Beetle music which was very good & if you ever been to a Billiard Tour. or league play most pool players like it quite. So I would suggest to go to another Rec Center or go swimming earlier or at at a latter time!

Some pools have music piped in and some don’t. If I go to one that doesn’t and play my music next to me and my wife at a volume much lower than what is piped in at some pools I don’t see what the problem is. I always get in the pool to see if it is audible and unless everything else is completely quiet it can’t be heard. I am very conscious of the volume and agree I don’t want to offend or impose. But if the rec center doesn’t pipe music to my pool what’s the problem? I also like the fact it blocks out the loud talkers and even the cell phone users. Those are the ones that bother me. There was a cell phone user the other day at the pool getting angry and animated and loud around the pool. That’s what bothers me.

They need to change the name of this page from talk of the villages to gripe of the villages. So now you want to ban music, and talking at the pools? So it’s no longer about the volume, it’s about someone else’s right to enjoy their time at the pool infringing on your right? There is no flip side to this coin? It’s your way or the highway? Well at least you weren’t complaining about them not wearing a mask while swimming. SMDH.

This is an ongoing issue north of CR 466 since we do not have The Villages Radio playing at our pools.

I have personally verified with the Recreation Department that radios are NOT ALLOWED AT POOLS NORTH OF CR 466.

There have been times at our pool when they are actually dueling radios with vastly different stations including commercials. How rude can one be to do that to other guests? Simple they do not care! Many are not residents ant think they are at some remote beach - duh!

Until the signs at the pools reflect this rule the only recourse is to go into the Recreation Center and complain. If you approach the idiot with the radio, who knows how they will react - many with foul language, or you can't make me stop blasting my radio.

I suggest we all take a moment to send an email to the Recreation Department asking that they add, NO RADIOS, to the rule signs at the pools north of CR 466. With today's technology there is no need to blast radios since anyone can get bluetooth ear buds.

These offenders, I believe are seeking attention or provocation. They will tell you it is not on the rules but it is a rule - NO RADIOS! My two cents.

It is hard to find quiet time at any pool, even with earplugs.

Random thoughts:
1. Our local pool pipes in the moldy oldies from TV radio. Not a fan of having to listen to old crap alllll the time. I (we) like a variety of music but not oldie oldies all the time. I vote for no piped in music at any pool.

2. So do I understand that because you don't want to listen to music no one should be allowed to?? Interesting....

3. I don't see a thing wrong with having a small bluetooth speaker between lounges or chairs that can be appreciated in that small environment but not across the pool. If you want to listen music, be courteous and don't plonk down next to someone who is reading...novel thought?? (pun intended)

4. Loud talking that fills the entire pool area is an artifact of loud people. You are not going to change/regulate loud people.

5. How about people just be courteous ....can't we all just hug and get along? Rarely is a solution black or white. Most often, courteous people find an acceptable grey. Oh, sorry no hugs...let's just all get along... lol...how naive is that!

6. So entertaining reading various people's responses to posts. Thank you! :MOJE_whot:

Not all of us can afford to have "our own pool", wish we could, but even so we should not be subjected to others music if we use the public ones. Villages Radio is played at some pools which is fine. Otherwise go the the nearest center and tell them about the music. It is Rec's job to deal with problems. Our pool has had gamblers and drinkers there at 6pm+ Fortunately that was stopped. Sadly the villages is getting filled with more and more selfish people. Used to be so nice.....

You will find few directions here, for anything.

You will find some folks think you should tell someone when something is displeasing and others who think you should not.

There are many mini-geographic attitudes that are at play here.

It appears to me that The Villages inc. tries NOT to tell people what to do.

When someone says; "You should go directly to their door and tell them." I think....you're kiddin' right???

It's annoying if people play their own music plus play it loud. I experienced something equally annoying. A woman at the Mallory adult
pool talked for more than half an hour very loudly on speakerphone. I was in the pool and found it extremely rude. Plus, there was a man in a lounge chair in her vicinity trying to relax and maybe take a nap plus a woman trying to do the same and the talker seemed to be oblivious to anyone around her. I hope she reads this and gets the message.

We have found some here in TV feel they are "entitled." When Souillere villas were being constructed in 2018 we enjoyed the pool there because not many people lived in Soulliere and the pool was never had more than 3 or 4 people. There was one bimbo who used to be there at times who thought it was OK to blast music while she marched in the water. My wife would have liked to drown the witch, but I told my wife I would really mind having to visit her in jail. No we didn't confront her just left the pool and went back to our villa.

If you guys want to know a secret, there is a neighborhood pool that almost nobody uses. It's where I stayed when I had my LSV in 2011, the Lakeshore Cottages just east of the sales office at LSL and at the foot of the Morse Bridge. If you're coming off Morse at the first light there is Bravo Pizza on the corner and Winn Dixie to the left, straight would take you to the square, instead turn right and turn again. It has a gate, it has a very nice pool and only has 53 homes. I stayed for a week and used the pool everyday and I was the only person there. The very first home on the west side overlooking Lake Sumter was Gary Morse's home, I don't know who owns it now. Gary obviously liked it for the convenience but it was so quiet in there and out of the way but yet you're only a short walk to the square and stores.

I kept up with some of the homes in there, Gary Morse's I believe sold for about $700K and the one I stayed in sold for about $600K. They're nice homes but you're paying for the location, the lots are very small and have no room for a pool, a big lanai or a golf cart garage. However, when you walk around on streets it makes you like you're on a movie set. You don't see anyone and the homes are immaculate and you have sidewalks with curbs and it's very nice. Here the location on this map.

The very first home on the west side overlooking Lake Miona was Gary Morse's home, I don't know who owns it now.

Google Maps (https://www.google.com/maps/place/The+Villages,+FL/@28.9098317,-81.9721874,394m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x88e7c1561da39a99:0x553b1 29a94b4af67!8m2!3d28.927019!4d-82.0037608)

I absolutely LOVE that section of the Villages. I keep forgetting that ALL of the neighborhood pools are for ALL residents to use. I live on the other side of the golf cart bridge and have four pools at my disposal (including the country club pool since we're members). But there are always people in them.

I should grab my suit next time I'm heading to Sumter Landing for lunch and make a day out of it. Thanks for the reminder!

Why is it that you would choose to describe a woman who played music and exercised AKA "marched" in the pool as a "bimbo" and "the witch" ? It really is possible to disagree with someone or their actions without using sexist labels and stereotypes.

Radio is one thing. But kids in adult only pools seems to be OK now? Seems rules are for everyone else.

Where have you seen kids in adult pools? That should be reported.

Reading this messages makes me realized I’ve missed nothing when it comes to the pools , 20 years in villages 5 homes , I don’t think I’ve been in a pool here a dozen times and probably 10 years since the last time

OP, why not ear plugs?

You won’t hear music nor the conversations.

Earplugs don't cut out sound completely. And that day I was trying to listen to my own music through earbuds, but I could still hear his music.

i'm not sure where you live, but if you'd like to come over to where we are, south of 44, our pools have signs posted with rules. one of them is no radio's. only 1 time did i see someone 'break' the rule, and it didnt even bother anyone. he had it @ a table, listening quietly to sports while his grandkids swam. the neighborhood pools are even quieter.

Way too far for me, especially since I only have a golf cart this year due to border crossing restrictions. Glad you have that rule written on pool properties. We have to work on that north of 466. But thanks for the suggestion!

I can't believe all the useless suggestions. Do what I do. I simply take out my hearing aids! Works every time. Also, I take them out at home when my wife starts to complain. Works like magic - makes life so quiet and appealing.
Huh? What did you say?

Noise is muffled with ear plugs. Noise cancelling head sets will eliminate noise.

Thoughts?

Perhaps a call to the Recreation Department (which is for all of TV) and ask why pool rules are not posted at pools north of 466 and if radios are allowed or not.
Rather than getting 80+ different opinions on here..........

Pools are for swimming or something less in the Water. Want lay around in lawn chair don’t expect the public to obey you’re needs. It’s public amenities. We don’t get what we want all the time. Yes, loud music that don’t like in obnoxious, but in general the public is obnoxious.:duck:
