It's been a while since I replaced one, and I'm shocked at a quote for over $2K for a 10 year tank.
Anyone confirm if this is the right ballpark? I guess it's been too long since I had this done. (I was expecting half that price)

For a simple change out, sounds way too high
Check with Lowes or Home Depot. They can usually sell you a new water heater plus install at a fair price. In addition they will stand behind the warrenty and the installation work.

Great call - never even thought of that.
Thanks.

Well things must have changed a GREAT deal since we bought a new one last year ! Bought at Home Depot, gas, same brand we've bought for YEARS in several homes in several states. Hired a plumber to install it (checked on TOTV for recommendation of someone who does this work... the BIG name with the fleet of vans want you to buy THEIR water heater, no need, can choose your own and HD will deliver (and would install too). Total was LESS than 25% of what you were quoted. BEWARE ! O.A. Smith is what we bought. Installation was fairly quick.... we had an existing one so not much to switching out for new one.

Here's a link of what Lowes has in stock in Trailwinds in 40 and 50 gallon electric tanks, most are between $300 and $400. I use Kiley and Sons for plumbing, they charge by the hour. Yes, they install something you buy yourself, I had them install a sink in September I bought at Home Depot. They charge by the hour, two years ago I had them install a new disposal, the hour rate was $100, he did the disposal in 30 minutes so I had him fix two other items in the remaining time. Here's the sink they just put in. He had removed the old sink and faucet, cut the countertop with a jigsaw, close off one drain and change the disposal from the old sink to the new sink, install this professional faucet, that's not granite but the original formica, took him about two hours, I wouldn't even attempt that myself even with the help of youtube.

This is exactly the reason this site is so good, there's help when you really need it, despite a lot of the petty stuff that goes on. I don't need a hot water heater yet, but I'm now prepared for when I do. So thanks.

That price is way too high. Shop around. I would suggest that you add an expansion tank if you don't already have one. The latest code requires it, but some plumbers will omit it.

A tankless water heater will give you an unlimited amount of hot water, but to have hot water on demand you'll need a system that is set up to recirculate the water. To recirculate water you will need to have a return line installed so water can circulate throughout the house. If not it will take just as long to get hot water to any faucet in the house as your regular tank system. The water still has to travel the same distance to get to any fixture.

Kiley & Son is an AUTHORIZED TECO INSTALLER
The Kiley Tech named Roger Smith did mine.
Roger did an excellent job.
I called at 4PM and they did same day install.
She confirmed prices.....They did mine last year
for same price they quote today
40 gallon gas... ...
NET PRICE ...after $ 350 Rebate is $ 640
That INCLUDES
..... new EXPANSION TANK, Tray and ALL
misc. and parts
necessary for complete INSTALL
AND take away of old unit .....
I paid $990. and got a $ 350 rebate = $ 640. NET to me
BUT...I think Teco also has a 60 months same as cash
where they add 10 bucks or so a month to your bill to pay for it....
... so you don't have to front the money

Sounds expensive for sure but without full specs you can't be sure as it also depends on TYPE of tank if gas. Some are 2-3x more than others (excluding tankless) so it also depends on exactly what the OP was quoted on vs. what everyone else is getting. Of course there was capacity differences but very important was hot water recovery time. The fastest recovery tanks were over 2x the price of the lowest end ones. Then there was different venting types, higher efficiency and on and on so like everything else saying "I paid $XX" or "they quoted $xx" is meaningless unless you are comparing apples to apples unless here in FL there is only one type you can buy which is doubtful.

Yes, done several, swap the 220v electric cord, install new pipe fittings, pressure pop off drain line, new hoses and plug it in. In okieland I was on well water with pressure tank. Water heater might last 8 years there. I alway brought the 10 year warranty one and usually got freebie before warranty ran out. Hear, got have small expansion tank which added hundred or so bucks. I considered having 220V line ran to go electric.
Gas not that hard it don’t mind fooling with gas lines.

Thanks. Electric & plastic seems easy. Hardest part seems to be taking the old one off the shelf and lifting the new one up! Yea, did a Navien gas tankless in NJ but didn't want to get 500 messages saying it wasn't safe to DIY. Even ran a copper recirc line but we had a crawlspace so it was easy to reach the MBR line from below. :D

Toooo high, plus TECO will install a new one, take old away, and add about 10 dollars to your monthly gas bill interest free till it’s paid off. Cost for our water heater 3 years ago was 685. Only exception is if you sell your home, as we did, balance becomes payable at settlement. Just another option.

If you have gas, I think the gas company still has the $350 rebate. I picked up a $300 40 gal tank at Lowes, had Tim Herndon install it and take the old one away, and after I got my rebate and paying the plumber, the final total cost was about $175. I also did this on my first house here and for a friend.

Get a recirculating pump instead of a tankless heater. Top of the line is $200 at Amazon and a plumber or handyman can install it for about $100. It will deliver hot water in less than 10 seconds.

Make sure they install properly so you can get a hose on the drain faucet. Ours was cockeyed and inside the drip pan (installed by previous owner) and we couldn’t drain our tank. Called the installer who wasn’t the least concerned about the issue. Wanted to charge $85 to look at it. Will never use them. Hubby cut a notch in the drip pan...free!

Have a look at the chart below, which I posted a few weeks ago with a lot of commentary on a thread here on Tankless Water Heaters, along with a lot more info. The most expensive now and the cheapest over a decade by far is an electric heat pump water heater, also available from HD.

Tankless water heaters will not provide hot water to your tap faster. They are better if you are seasonal since they only use energy when you use hot water. They also never run out of hot water since it is continuing to make hot water as long as there is demand. You're not limited to 40 or 50 gallons of hot water.

We have the tankless water heater available through TECO People’s Gas. They offer a high quality system, installed, and add a small monthly charge to your bill, we found the total price to be extremely reasonably. We get hot water nearly as fast as we did with the old tank type heater, but you never run out of hot water. Nice when guests all shower in the morning, if that ever happens again.

:) Jody, because you said TECO, I assume you were quoted a price to replace a gas water heater with another gas water heater. That being said, if you look at the TECO web site the rebates are either $350.00 or $400.00 - one is for a standard heater and the other is for an energy efficient heater (the one I got at LOWES was energy efficient and cost approx. $450.00.) I got the $400.00 rebate..... there is no $250.00 rebate but..... if I remember correctly there is a place on the rebate form to have the TECO check sent to you or the Contractor. Tell him you want the check sent to you. They should fill out the form for you and let you sign and mail it in after reading it carefully. :ho:

If you install the tankless in the same location as the original, it will take just as long for the water to get to the faucet. Now if you move the tankless closer to the end use location it will be much quicker. Best solution is a recirculating pump. You place it at the most distant faucet location. It requires a 120 volt receptacle to plug into. It connects into the hot and cold water lines. Mine had a timer, and also a thermostat. During the selected times, it would pump the hot water into the cold water line, and continue to do that until hot water is at that location. You do not waste any water since you are recirculating it. Cost installed approx $500. Your only issue will be that the cold water will be somewhat warmer during the selected recirculate times.

The price depends on size of the hot water heater type electric or gas water heater what they have to do to remove it and take it away. Since you live in an area that has a high recovery water. My recommendation you purchase a point of use one at The home depot not a hot water tank. You will save a great deal of money on fuel usage. Then you could get estimate from the The home Depot contractors which is very pricey because their contractors have pay for your lead to the store. or a local licensed plumber which doesn't

It's been a while since I replaced one, and I'm shocked at a quote for over $2K for a 10 year tank.
Anyone confirm if this is the right ballpark? I guess it's been too long since I had this done. (I was expecting half that price)
I'd be shocked, too. I replaced mine a year ago through Mike Scott Plumbing and it was just under $1000. That was with a new expansion tank AND a $300 rebate from the gas company. My next door neighbor was charged a similar cost, but a friend who had his water replaced recently paid less than $800, and it was the same size tank. KEEP SEARCHING!

How do you open your shutters with the faucet handle in the way? I had this same problem and was forced to change out faucets. It was my mistake for not considering that in the first place.

Right...stick with the big box stores. Better prices and guarantees. For that kind of money, opt for a tankless heater. In fact, I’d say pot for tankless from Lowe’s or HD.

2k sounds like a senior citizen rip off to me. 2K to me is a bit to much when the the best water heater only runs maybe $900. that’s a $1,100. Maintenance charge. So I guess if you think that’s a deal, buy it.

If it is gas, call the gas company, they replaced ours for $9.99 per month added to our gas bill for 60 months.

Way too high even for a tankless system with installation. Contact TECO. Very reasonable for tank and tankless units and they send out the plumber to remove old tank and install new tank. There is an extra cost for the permit if you are replacing a tank system with a tankless one.

Two weeks ago, on a Saturday afternoon , we discovered our hot water was spewing water out of the top. Apparently this had been happening for awhile because the double doors to the water heater / HVAC closet were swollen. I called Mike Scott Plumbing and they arrived about an hour later. We upgraded from a 40 gallon to a 50 gallon electric tank. The total cost was $860 and included a new pressure tank. We were extremely happy with the service Mike Scott Plumbing did. Then called the warranty department and found out what company installed the doors in our house. Our new doors will be and installed in this week for under $300. Lesson learned, check the water heater closet daily, water never leaked into the garage.

thx for sharing this valuable info. by any chance, do you recommend a tankless heater? someone told me it serves hot water without waiting 2mins or so for it to warm up
A central Tankless works well in Flordia, due to the high-temperature inlet water temp. They save you space, giving you a new closet to store junk, where your old water tank was. BUT they will not make your kitchen sink water hot instantly. That requires a 2nd "demand tankless heater" in the cabinet next to the sink. Or a recirculating pump.

It makes no sense to recirculate the hot water thru your cold water line at its furthest point from the heater. A new pipe should be run back from your hot water furthest point to the inlet pipe near/at the water heater. :ohdear:

Way to high. Should be $800. Price what it is to buy one line at Lowe’s and Home Depot and get install price.
Always get quotes from several providers.

Interesting...looks like there are different numbers for Mike Scott Plumbing. The number that I listed is the number that we used. Looked it up on the website and another number is listed as (352) 237-2888, so guess that there are several.

Research water heaters. I was surprised to with a cursory look that 12 year water heaters are cheaper perhaps because they are more popular with more models. At Home Depot
Just google water heaters.

Apply thru gas company for a tankless hot water heater--monthy payments added to gas bill or cash price of under $1300 --Plus save $ on future bills. Tip if you do this, have a pump added to give you "instant" water--perhaps thru another company -switch for pump can be anywhere-mine is in kitchen-but you can press it on way to bath--used it for many years in Japan and now USA(we are way behind in bathroom amenities)
Call Scott’s plumbing we had it put in last year 1/4 of that price. Also call the
Gas company and you can pay 10.00 a month no interest if you want to.

We replaced our water heater 2 years ago it cost around $700 to $800. Look in on your water heater to see who did your plumbing when the house was built call them .

Just replaced a gas 50 gal water heater - bradford smith - made in USA and also had 2 valves replaced ( shutoff and humidifier tap ) total out the door was $1650 - may be a little higher than most but I dont always but the cheapest - included a pan and a expansion tank. Probably took the guy 2 hours with next day service - very satisfied

Mike Scott Plumbing replaced mine last week.
Plumber spoke of a rebate (they handle) etc., so all in was 700.00 even.
Plumber accessed & proposed, left & returned w/ one & completed install by lunch time.
