I finally realized that I am a Floridian

I went out to get the mail yesterday and thought that it was incredibly cold. I was thinking that it must be 40 degrees or lower. I got home and checked the outdoor thermometer and saw that it was 61.

Been here eight years and can't stand it when it gets below 75.

I realized I was a Floridaian about ten years ago on my first trip through The Villages. I left central Michigan, drove straight through, and the outdoor thermometer in my car went up 99 degrees. True story.

Back in Maryland we usually stopped golfing in late October or early November, most times it snowed on Thanksgiving. I remember my last year, I moved here in June 2011 and that year, the day after New Year's January 2, 2011 I played golf. When I got to the course it was biggest crowd I had ever seen, bigger than in the summer. The parking lot was packed and the golf pro was running around like a chicken. It was suppose to 50 today in the Baltimore area.

When I got to the pro shop the pro was collecting money, then ten minutes later I was my car putting my shoes on and the pro drove up in a cart and said, this is your cart, your group is on the tee, I couldn't believe I was going off so quick. He was doing everything himself at golf course that day. I guess normally they have only a few golfers and he runs the whole show, this day there was a big wait, so being a single really paid off. My usual golfing partner didn't want to play.

I looked back at the weather that day when I teed off and we thought it was balmy.

I am stuck up north in Westerm, MA until after the holidays. I played golf last Thursday to get in a December round and extend my very long streak of at least one round per month spanning several years, which is a difficult feat when not full time in Florida. It was the best day in the long term forecast, 28 degrees out when I got up and it got to the high 40’s in the afternoon for a short time before the sun started to disappear. This time of the year it gets too dark to golf by about 4:20 and frost delays usually last until at least 9:30. That leaves only about two hours and fifteen minutes of t times one can get in a round before dark. I called every course in a 40 mile radius of our home before getting a time, and only got that because someone called in and cancelled. We had to golf with hand and toe warmers to get us through the round. This AM when I got up it was 21 degrees and the ground is now covered with snow, so no more golf until New Years in The Villages. Can’t wait to get the Holidays in the rear view mirror and start the long drive south. I will be the idiot driving around in my golf cart with shorts and a T shirt in January : )

That's what I call my wife(who was born and raised at the Canadian border in Maine), and has only been here 2 years. If it gets below 75, she contemplates wearing sleeves and pants. Cheers!

We "arrived" here late at night on January 7th 2017 after traveling through and outrunning a major snow storm that followed us from N Carolina through Georgia to begin the rest of our lives. On January 8th we woke up for our usual walk at around 7AM in our temporary rental in Nucky's world and it was 31 degrees and the sprinkler water was frozen on the driveway. I immediately requested a refund for the rest of our lives but it was an AS-IS final sale so we're still here. It was 17 degrees in NJ that same day so it was a little bit better here.

I canceled my golf game today. It was sub-40 when I first went outside. Tee time temps were supposed to be mid-40's or so. That's pretty cold. But I played high school and college golf in Ohio. We had to finish our seasons by April or so, so we got used to playing in some really nasty, cold weather. But now I can't stand to play sub-60...in spite of my ToTV name. LOL!! So I guess I'm officially a Floridian. :)

Grew up in NYC where 40 degrees was wear a light jacket and spend the day outside weather.

Been walking 1/2 mile each morning to get the mail from previous day and than go home and have breakfast.

Now have breakfast and wait for weather to warm up before venturing outside.

This morning had some early errands and actually wore a down jacket.

Born in Buffalo NY, lived 24 years in Upstate NY. Moved to Atlanta 28 years, now at TV...and we freeze if it’s below 65-70. Would not move back north for anything! Chilly morning outside today! 🥶🥶🥶

A few years ago when I first got to TV we went on a day trip to Daytona to the beach. The temperature outside was about 75 and sunny, the water temperature about 70. My friends were complaining it was a little cool. I said I was going into the water and they thought I was totally crazy. I told them this is as warm as it ever gets up north so it felt great to me. Having lived hear for a few years would not do it again.

I noticed that 60 feels colder in Florida than it does up North when I was just visiting TV. Not sure why that is the case but it does seem there is usually a breeze down here. Comparable temps in the summers feel cooler down here too.

I was retired for a year before we moved here, and living in VA, we could play most of the year. I retired in late February and we had some playable days. I ran into some guys from work one day and they asked how my golf game was. I told them I was playng in the 60's. When they looked at me with disbelief, I said "If it's colder than that I don't go out."

Back in the 70s and 80s I played a lot of winter golf on Cape Cod. They usually get very little snow because of the salt air what snow they get disappears pretty quickly so many golf courses stay open year round. I definitely played a few rounds with the temperature in the thirties.

I read a great book about a journalist who moved to St Andrews with his family. There was (possibly still is) a character there who played golf 365 days a year regardless of weather. One day during a blizzard a friend asked him what hole he thought George was on that day.

And don't forget about the numerous polar bear clubs up north (in Boston they are the L-Street Brownies) that swim in the ocean year round.

Maine is different. I spent a summer in northern Maine once. I learned that there were three kinds of people there. Natives, southerners (people from Portland) and those "from away".

You could have been born in Boston and moved to northern Maine when you were two years old, lived there for 50 years and you were still "from away".

Back in the 70s I took a golf vacation with some friends to Myrtle Beach. The weather there can be iffy. 75 and sunny one day, 45 and cloudy the next. One day we were on the golf course and it was one of those 45 and cloudy days. We were all bundled up in sweaters, long underwear and rain suits. We came to a tee where the group in front of us was just walking off the tee. We noticed that they were all in shorts and short sleeved golf shirts. As we were waiting in the tee, a ranger came by and chatted. We mentioned that the group in front of us appeared to be underdressed. He said one word, "Canadians"

It was only hot for about six months. And I don't know where you live, but the only bugs I see in The Villages are love bugs which are around for about two weeks.

I'll take hot and humid any day over temps in the 30s and 40s.

It always amazes me that some people move to Florida and complain about the hot weather. What did they think it was going to be?

Cooler is fine. Yesterday it was 72 and it felt great. The problem is when I go out in the morning and it's 35 or I go out at night and it's 44.

My brother who is still up north feels that 40 is comfortable whereas at 40 I'm staying in the house or bundling up.

A few years ago I had a Fairbanks layover followed by a Ft. Lauderdale layover. In FAI the temp was 40 and people were out in shorts and T-Shirt. Couple days later I’m in FLL and eating outside at a touristy ocean restaurant. I’m in short sleeves. The waitress said “aren’t you cold” I said it’s 70 degs and she said “I know, it’s freezing.”

It’s amazing we live in a country that is so vast the temp difference from one end to the other is huge. I think my record is Nome, AK at -55degs to be followed 24 hours later with a Palm Springs layover at 85degs. Not many countries have 140 deg temp spread.

Most people would be better acclimating themselves to whatever weather they are in , there is an old survival saying never become to comfortable in your environment , meaning the more heat or AC you use , the more you need. I turn AC off after dark and have never had heat on more then a few morning to get the chill out for about 15 minute . I also do all my biking and walking in afternoon no matter how hot and no cold drinks even if I’m at the beach . I find it much easier to enjoy the outdoors because of this and it’s no hardship at all , I’ll be 82 tomorrow and very much enjoying the outdoors no matter what the temperature is
