I just moved into a 2004 villa that has never had a water softener. I called Home Depot who referred someone who can install a product for me. They sent a technician from Florida Energy Water & Air. He told me I needed the EC5-CV75 model and the total package costs $6795. That seems a bit high but it's been a while since I purchased a water softener. Any ideas? I have 3 days to cancel if this is a scam? Thank you,

Whoa! I would cancel immediately. Way too high.

Most people use Nova, Pelican, or don't buy anything. I chose to not buy anything and I am happy with my water.

Cancel it for sure, someone is trying to get rich off of you. Agree totally with retiredguy, Nova is the way to go for both a filter system and a softener system. 1/4th the cost of what you are getting. We have been using ours for over 3 years with potassium pellets and it works great with no problems to date.

Your installer should be ashamed to even give you an estimate like that. Water softeners cost between approximately $400 to perhaps $1200 depending on size and manufacturer so do the math. Would you think some CPVC piping, pipe cleaner, glue, and 2 drains (emergency overflow drain and recharge drain) with your new softener cost over $6700? I installed a Lowe's Whirlpool softener in our old house for about $600 total.

OP, if you signed a contract or provided a credit card or check, I would cancel the contract in writing, email and a certified letter. Don't trust a phone call alone. This could be a scam.

$6795 is outrageous! I hope you can get out of the contract. I bought a Nova water filter on-line for approx $400 and they dropped it off at my home. I also picked up a 40,000 grain GE wireless water softener from Home Depot for $600 and installed both myself.

Call Nova (a sponsor on TOTV). They will install a whole house filter and water softener. Two years ago the total was less than $2000--I forget the exact amount. Clean soft water that tastes great. Your deal sounds like a scam to me. That's way overpriced. Even the most expensive water system going in this area is $3K+.

You may want to try a whole house water filter first. You may not need a water softener. We didn't.

Sorry to see this company still around.

Was taken advantage of by Rainsoft in the early 90's. Overpriced and broke within a couple of years. They solicit in your home and are supposed to allow you to cancel. I was to young to realize they weren't honest when I tried to cancel and didn't send a registered letter. Home Depot should really rethink doing business with this company.

When this is installed they don't tell you that you only get to set controls that they authorize by them so they can get a service charge to come back out and change,My water is still hard still stains clothing and I can not get into programming to set my hardness not only do you pay a large price for this you don't really get to own it.. conclusion...don't buy it

We got our rain soft system in February... when they came to install it they didn’t bring enough piping so had to come back but never did because covid hit... so now we have a half installed water softener paying over $7000 dollars for and just found out they are banned in Tulare county... only bought because we trusted Home Depot but this place and this system is a scam can’t believe Home Depot carries it. Plus does not test for bacteria

I purchased this system 4 years ago and have regretted it ever since. First, it is extremely over priced. After spending $6800 and being told I had a lifetime warranty, I thought it would be a good buy. Two years later, the unit dumped a lot of water. So much so that the city contacted me about my water bill. $300 water bill and I thought I had a major plumbing issue. Nope. Plumber found it was the water softener. Thank God I didn't have to break up floors. Rainsoft service came out and fixed the unit. I moved and took this thing with me. Rainsoft was paid to come out and move it and reinstall at my new home. Less than a year later, major water dumping again. They came out and fixed the plastic valves yet again. This time I was told the water pressure is blowing out the valves. Really? At both homes I lived at? They installed a pressure gauge and repaired it again. That was exactly 1 year ago. The softener started dumping water again. I've sold this home and I am NOT taking this garbage. Written it off as a very expensive lesson. You can get a cheaper softener that you can service yourself. Rainsoft and Culligan are very over priced. I went with a whole house anti scale filter for my new home and cost $500 total with install.

Overpriced and not reliable
July 21, 2020
Save your time and money - this system is overpriced and it’s not reliable. It’s supposed to keep track of the salt levels but is always off by quite a bit. Talk to a plumbing company that will actually service their product long term.

Tricked
They say they are part of Home Depot but not.
July 4, 2020
They kept calling saying they were calling about refrigerator and stove we purchased. They were saying they needed to do a water test with regard to the warranty. They are only trying to sell a water softener system. They have to lie to you to get them into your home. Don’t do it. It has NOTHING to do with the warranty. Home Depot needs to stop giving them customer information for them to trick people into a 2 hr “water test” when it’s a sales pitch!
Was this helpful?

A friend put 2 in his house and I put 1 in mine. They tell you they will do yearly service on product. NO they will not. Call all you like they lie and refuse to follow up. I have a warning going off and I'm told to call corporate and they will walk me through what to do. DO NOT buy this, they will not follow up with anything. 7 phone calls and still waiting.

Beware. Expensive to install. Very expensive to maintain. The filters are expensive. The company that installed ours charges $120 for service call for the first 30 minutes and every 15 minutes after is about $30. We've had salt water getting in the water because the seals were bad. The dealer refuse to acknowledge that this caused the screws on the bathroom drain clean out to rust. The ice from the refrigerator leaves salt residue on the refrigerator. I called the corporate office and they are no help.

We where ripped off by vendor which was in Home Depot, paid almost $9000 ( vendor went out of business , we where left alone ) there is some wenor who charge for home sane price as for business! If I can return time I will never got this from Home Depot

There are more on page 2

I went with NOVA for both the softener and the filters for less that $2000 and it's great.

The RainSoft EC-5 series of water conditioners are a very complete water treatment system, to the point that I suspect that it may be overkill for the water around here (at least if you're feeding it from the Wildwood City water supply).

They sell online for from $1100 to $2000. Buy one, pay a plumber a few hundred dollars, pocket the remaining $5000, and be happy!

Another vote for Nova, we have had them install the water filtration system and softener in both our Villages homes. Here is the contact info. Nova 382 566-2649 Nova Filters | The Villages Fl (https://novafilters.com/). $600 for the filtration system and $900 for the softener, INSTALLED. They are a TOTV sponsor and highly recommended.

If you are having trouble installing the one you bought from Home Depot, call a Handyman. There are lots of recommendations in TOV, just do a search. Many places try and talk you in to all these over priced systems. BTW, we don’t even use a water softener. The filtered water from our refrigerator works just fine.

Check if you need a softener at all. If taste is your concern a filter will work. When we bought our 2004 villa it came with a sink filter from Aquasana, Inc. Works great and the coffee and bourbon and branch taste much better. Replacement filters cost about $50 and last us better than a year.

For $6800 it should turn your water into an endless supply of bourbon, wine or beer. Just contact Nova. I went to HD, their combo filter and softener units were under a thousand, problem was when you contact the installers they want to come to your house to evaluate which one was correct. That’s was when I said I’m out.

You bought a water filtration system, much more than a water softener. Surprised that it wasn’t installed already, as they want you to keep it. The water is delicious, and you won’t have all the suspended particles (salts, chemicals). We didn’t realize what we bought at first, but when you take into consideration the minimal maintenance needed, it has value. You can knock off about 1,000 by going with the basic meter system (no WiFi).

Have you had the water tested to see if you even need a filter? As a retired commercial plumbing contractor from New England, I found that less than 20% of properties that were on town (city) water needed any sort of filtration.

Sounds pretty high to me too. I still say these services around TV take advantages of the retirees & senior citizens. I hope that $6795. Includes FREE salt for at least 5 yrs. I do admit the water inTV doesn’t smell or taste good, I don’t care what anybody says. Good luck!

We do the same. I did check water quality in the villages before buying and for Florida it is pretty good. We do have hard water. That is due to the fact that our soil is loaded with limestone. Issues with water softeners, most of them use salt and they backflush.
The salt if it is dumped on your plants will likely damage your landscaping. Some plants are more salt tolerant.

Far as laundry adding borax to your detergent makes it work better in hard water.

I too installed the Whirlpool from Lowe’s. My wife had allergy issues since moving here and, after trying many remedies, we thought the issues may have been in the high amount of additives put into our water. The reviews I read for the Whirlpool said it would last 3 to 5 years. I thought that was O K and still cost effective. I paid a local plumber to install it. Now, 9 years later, I am WAY ahead of the game, cost wise. It still works very well. I am so very glad I didn’t spend thousands of dollars. We also added a water filter. Softeners do not remove the additives.

We have hard water so most homes need water softener (a chem test reading of 6 grains+ Could benefit) plus our water had ab odor we found odd compared to water we had from our well in NH so we added a carbon filter (not the little cartridge type but a 4’ high unit filled with carbon)
Most of you get talked into the cartridge filters which do nothing for hardness. A real 31000 or 40000 grain water softener should be maybe $2300 plus install

Thanks to everyone who gave advice. I canceled the order & am now scheduling Nova to come & give me a quote.
