Patio Villa Topaz - wood studs or metal?

I am attaching a wall mount for my 45" flat screen TV. My Dewalt DW0100 stud finder located the stud but the drill bit didn't hit any wood although there was more resistance than one would suspect from dywall only. I did not notice any metal residue on the drill bit. The stud finder gets great reviews and when I knock along the wall I would pick the same spot as the stud finder.

My question; did the builder use metal studs on the interior walls instead of wood 2x4's on my brand new Patio Villa Topaz?

I am going to call the builder on Monday.

In some houses, there will be a mix of wood and metal studs. Sometimes, they use metal studs for the high walls to make the wall straighter and less wavy. But, you should be able to tell if a stud is wood by driving a small nail into it.

Avoid the studs, wood or metal, and use 1/4” Snap Toggles at Lowe’s or Home Depot.

In my CYV (Woodlawn aka Durham) in the guest BR I hung a 42" TV three years ago. I was going to mount it in the 3' of space between the top of the closet and the ceiling. I didn't want to use the right wall, it was a masonry exterior and the left wall was not enough room. With the bed situated, it had to be above the closet.

When I went went in I found metal studs around the top of the closet. I went about 18' higher than I had planned and found wood studs. Since you're usually viewing a TV laying down and reclined in bed, it wasn't a bad angle and of course the TV can be adjusted downward with the rack I was using. It came out good enough and total cost, $27 for the rack from Amazon and $50 for the concealed wire kit from Home Depot. Here's a view from the bed.

TV is way too high for me. Even in bed, youre partially sitting up when awake n watching TV. I had mounted one just like that and it was. Huge mistake. Way way too high and caused definite neck cramps. Think twice before mounting anything this high

All metal inside homes. We used a butterfly mount. Just for drywall.

I use the snap toggles mentioned in another answer, but I drill through the center of the metal stud. That way you are not relying upon just the sheet rock for support especially if hanging a heavy item

Normally, they use metal studs for partition walls (non weight baring walls) and wood studs for weight baring walls. Bill

TV is way too high for me. Even in bed, youre partially sitting up when awake n watching TV. I had mounted one just like that and it was. Huge mistake. Way way too high and caused definite neck cramps. Think twice before mounting anything this high

The photo is NOT taken from where you would sit at the head of the bed. I wanted to show the OP a good view of where I had mounted the TV since he had also encountered metal studs. If I had taken the photo from the top of the bed, you would see an inversion table on the left and dresser and mirror on the right. I wanted to crop those items out and show the location better. Had I installed the TV where I originally planned, it would still be above the closet door but maybe 18" lower. It's 10' from the head of the bed to the TV screen, plenty of distance. Plus you're sitting on a bed and in our case, we have a high mattress.

We actually used this BR for two nights in September because we were having wood floors installed throughout the house and our other two TVs were removed along with the furniture by the installers. This TV being mounted on the wall, it wasn't necessary to move. So for two nights we used it and it was great. I had no problem sitting up in bed and seeing the TV without any neck problems.
