Have been a patient of Sumter Landing Dental Care for 5 years.
Wonder if any one else has experienced the following : After my last dental cleaning in June of 2020 or so, a new appointment was made for cleaning for Nov.2020 - they called and rescheduled that for Dec.due to Covid - OK no problem - then they rescheduled that one for Jan.7, 2021 - ok still not allarmed - then on Jan.4, 2021 they contacted me to let me know that the Doctor wasn't in that day and they had to reschedule ....... for JUNE of 2021 . due to Florida law that the Dentist has to excam prior to cleaning ! What the HECK is going on at Sumter Landing Dental Care ! ! ! Very unhappy with the whole issue - it can't be JUST because of the Covid issues. (and all that after I spend more than 10 thousand dollars out of pocket with them in the last 2 years !

Anyone else that has this experience with them ?

i use them, & yes, they have VERY STRICT covid rules, but i don't think it's just them. dentists have a different protocol because they're routinely exposed to various body fluids. if all you spent was 10 grand, consider yourself lucky, lol. i've had some appointments cancelled, but what can you do? speak to the office manager herself, she will do her best. in the meantime if you have pain, you can directly make an appt with an oral surgeon, but some treatments/surgeries may not be covered

Depends on whether they was free appointments after the 10 grand? I would be toothless hillbilly before I would spend 10 grand on couple teeth. Now whole mouth full? that’s doable, maybe? Luckily I still have good teeth.

Lots of horror stories about dental upselling in The Villages. Outside of The Villages, not so much.

I've been using Dr. Forrest Jerkins in Fruitland Park because of recommendations on the site. I used Sumter Landing Dental before that because they were in my Medicare network. After several free cleanings, I was told they wouldn't do anymore free cleanings until I had a deep gum cleaning. That's when I left and went with Dr. Jerkins. Said I didn't need a deep gum cleaning, and has never done anything that isn't needed. Sent me to Villages Endodontics to test a couple of teeth for root canals and crowns, and after seeing the x rays, told me that one tooth was find, and only needed one crown on the one I had the root canal on. I have Delta Dental Premier, but not sure what other insurance he accepts

We use Serenity Denistry in Spanish Springs. They are very careful, have air cleaners in each room, they wear ultra protective headgear, patients only take mask off for actual work in the mouth, and they do not try to sell you on work needing done. Regarding teeth cleaning, it's nice to get it done every six months, but it's not mandatory. If you brush well, floss, etc., you can go a year unless you have some oral medical reason not to.

I too go to Dr. Jerkins. No only is he an excellent dentist but he is completely honest and never tries to upsell anything. He's a nice guy too as is his entire staff. So happy to have found him after going to one of the scammer dentists around here for just a cleaning. Prior to moving down here I had been to my dentist who assured me all was great. Six months after moving here I went for a cleaning at a well known dentist in TV, now I needed 4 crowns! I don't think so. Found Dr. Jerkins who assured me all was well with my teeth.

My wife and I where tired of being ripped off in the states by dentists. 9 years ago we started going to Managua, Nicaragua to the Madriz family of Martha, David and Ivan. We go every year and sometimes twice a year. We have saved 10'sof thousand dollars, have a great vacation and made many friends in that time. Going back again early this year to
complete 2 crowns. They are wonderful people and no scamming. Most times they have saved us money from the quotes. They are also U.S. citizens

I was a client of Sumter Landing Dental for 3 years. I really, really, really like Dr. Price. He has never upsold me on anything. In fact, all he has done for me is routine stuff like cleaning and xrays. He has always said my teeth are great. BUT, I can no longer deal with all the cancellations and rescheduling. This was happening long before COVID. When Sumter Landing Dental Care called me in December to AGAIN reschedule my appointment, I told them to forget it and I switched to another dental practice. My first appointment with them is in a couple weeks. I hope I like my new dentist as much as Dr. Price. I think that Sumter Landing Dental Care is too big and has a hard time handling their patient-load. Too bad, because I really do like the Dentist and their office is really good at handling insurance claims.

I see Dr. Wallace at Marion Dental and he has always been terrific. Doesn't upsell and tries to find ways to save us money. No cancelled appointments and they follow COVID procedures closely.

My experience with a number of dentists in TV is they are mostly all money grabbers. Yet to find a good and honest one. A couple of years ago at Sumter I had to have some resurfacing done. Went in and when they were finished, I started to leave and got to the front desk and my bite did not feel right. So I said to the receptionist something wasn’t right. She told me I would have to make another appointment. In not so friendly of terms I explained to her that was not going to happen. I turned around and walked back into the office found the dentist and told him my bite was of. He reluctantly took me back in and fixed it. They just wanted the extra appointment so the could double bill the insurance company. I have lived in TV for over 10 years. If you are not stuck in their health system, do yourself a favor and find a doctor and dentist in Ocala or Leesburg and you will be far less likely to get ripped off.

Not that dentist. My OPINION based on my experience. I unfairly stick my wife with making such appointments, She is far nicer and far more accommodating than I am.
I believe the front desk ladies know that. Seems, whenever they have someone cancel
they call her and assume she will cheerfully accomdate them.

I locked horns with one of these people. They expected my wife to as she always does to accomdate them. I handled it and told them I would need to check and would call them back later in the day. She got all and took it upon herself to cancel my appointment. I asked to speak to the dentist and was told the dentist was with a patient. Fine and expected, I asked for a call back-never happened. I got a letter suggesting I find another dentist. If you are not aware you will get a like 6 week wait for a new dentist to see you. I got a likely standard atty prepared letter saying they would handle any emergency care for ???? six weeks. Truth, had I needed it fat chance on getting an appointment. I sent a restricted delivery letter, dentist needs to sign for it
outlining politely what happened. I got a call from the dentist who was very nice.
She claims she does not have complaints about the ??? receptionist. I directly said I am not suggesting she fires the lady. Now, I am still a patient. If, we call, the receptionist will not talk to me. We are treated like family of the dentist. Have not had any requests at all to change appointments.
They do not have an easy job. My view it is often not what they need to get done by how they speak. We've had an emergency could you do us a favor and come in early, late ???? tomorrow. That is far different than we've cancelled your appointment and rescheduled you for ........ The people in the front establish the personality of the practice. Too many of them are untrained or the wrong people in that tough job.

What I think I know. They no longer fill teeth with amalgam which we thought of as silver but is really a combination of silver an mercury. We were putting mercury, outlawed for thermometers, blood pressure machines, clocks etc into our mouths. The amalgam could fill larger cavities than the new adhesives they now use.

Perhaps a partial explanation why more crowns. In terms of money. Crowns are one of the most profitable procedures for a dentist. Perhaps, another reason for more crowns.

In many cases there are alternatives. Simply pull the tooth. A false tooth. False teeth.
Implants. All have problems. I had a tooth that was filled. Latter a root canal and a crown.
It cost me a small fortune. I suppose it lasted 40-50 years. Was it worth all the money?
Did I get my monies worth? I think so. Teasing- when it was pulled go figure, it cost me for that too.

I have not found a dentist to recommend as many posts also state. One more to never never try is the Aspen clinics. They seem to be 'Grad farms' for young graduates who may be paid on the commission basis - so lots of pressure on expensive procedures. They actually harmed my teeth. Different story for different time. :ohdear::ohdear:

We have been patients at Wildwood Dentists (WD) across from Publix in Traverse Plaza for over 5 years and we have never been "upsold" on any procedure. We have had several procedures "recommended" to us, such as deep cleanings for gum health, crown replacements for bacteria infections deep under the existing crowns, etc. etc. Again, they were recommended for the longevity of our dental health, not part of any strong arm tactic. Some we proceeded with, some we didn't.

Hubby had his two front teeth busted out out at an early age (you know, being propelled over the front of his new English bike at the tender age of 13 years)
and were replaced with a post and crown (the early form of implant technology). They BOTH lasted for almost 50+ years until one of the posts cracked and became loose. Now it wasn't like the dentist could just super glue it back together. The only recommendation was to remove the tooth entirely and then replace it with an implant. Hubby had it pulled and wore a "flipper" (denture with a fake tooth attached) and wore it for almost 2 years before he chose to bite the bullet (no pun intended) and proceed with the implant.

If you think that the state of your dental health is fine and okey dokey, then by ALL means disregard the warnings that your dentist happens to find on your xrays. Would you rather them not telling you about the problems, and letting things get out of hand? You can address it now, or later...when it might just progress to a point when other obstacles rear their ugly heads. Your choice.

Do all dentists point out potential problems going on in your mouth?...Yes! Do all do so by strong arming you?...No? We have trusted WD for a long time. Have certain key personnel at WD come and gone over the years?...Yes! IMHO Dr. Patel and his staff at WD at present is top notch. Give them a try and you'll be impressed. :coolsmiley:

Had similar experiences, you are not alone. Something seems not quite right here, more like a retail store than a profession ? Kind of like dental McDonald's. It's very difficult to find a true dentist as we've experienced elsewhere. The endless needles X-rays (not for any specific purpose), the cost of a simple cleaning here, and the constant urging that something awful is going to happen if "deep" cleaning with antibiotics is needed, all kinds of advice. If at all possible for you, we've found visiting our dentist (actually now his son !) when back to our former home is a very wise investment, even if not having any problems. You may find that many of the things you are being told are kind of boarder line professional, possible but not probably and that most dentists would not urge you into. Have had friends here with grown children in Tampa area, Orlando area, who were able to guide them to the kind of dentist you, and many of us were more used to before moving to The V's. Also have met very aggressive doctors ! Former GP recommended (due to many factors, diet, healthy life style, family medical history, etc. etc.) that going straight to the most invasive colon testing is NOT best in my case, so annual less invasive test. Doctors here said wrong, stool (sorry) test useless waste of time, annual invasive test only what they use, always at the same lab (curious ? when something like this is called for previously, we've always been able to choose where it was done, for instance, where we lived previously, some labs were known to have equipment brands with much higher radiation exposures than others for such things as mammography and other tests ! Seem like walking a mine field here at times.

Wow, 10K "nothing". It is interesting to read the various views (obviously people from greatly differing backgrounds, locations, and incomes. No wonder so many people have no understanding that the world they come from is not the only one. Not meaning this as any kind of personal snipe on this poster or on anyone who thinks 10K is "normal" or "nothing", not at all ! ! Just an interesting observation that makes this site so interesting: to see and read how relative things are to various people who come from such diverse places and background is all. When you are from a small town in Nebraska or Arkansas, you can't imagine having dental costs of $10K is all I mean by this.

They were supposed to do my cleaning last April. When I called to make sure they would be doing it they said no but someone would call to reschedule. They never did until the next scheduled cleaning last month and then they wanted me to go to their office over on 441. Needless to say I have found another dentist. Over a year and a half without a cleaning and then to shift me over to a further office just won't do it.

Also interesting to see the levels of service from support staff, scheduling even office locations people will tolerate. And of course it's always about the provider, they have no culpability. All about the diversity in The Villages which is why any recommendations need to be researched......we all have different levels of acceptability.

The $10 grand is nothing remark is obviously meant that dental work can be very expensive , not that $10 ,000 was nothing and for those lucky enough to not have problems good for you. , but for those who have had to have work done they know it’s worth it , dental work is not just teeth it’s gums and bone that can go bad for all kinds of reasons. 30 years ago I had to have gum surgery and some caps , people said it’s not worth it some already had false teeth but I’ve heard from people years later that they wished they had spent the money, it doesn’t matter whether you come from small town or big town dental health is important to your whole body health. Since the initial gum work I had to do it again and had some new caps , many of my problems came from 40 years in third world countries and the water and tropical diseases I had along the way , but I will continue to care forb my teeth no matter the price even at 82 and to help with the vigilance I get them deep cleaned every 3 months money well spent

I go to Dr. Price just for annual exam and xrays only. He has never tried to upsell any treatment and has always given me an excellent report on the health of my teeth. I go to Dr. John Bonner for perio-maintenance which is a deeper cleaning than a regular dental cleaning. I don't have any complaints about Dr. Price's practice.

I also had to go to their 441 office for a cleaning (when I was using Dr. Price's for cleanings). I was told the 441 office is for all the cleanings because they were attempting to keep all the aerosol procedures to one office. I did as they requested.
