I may buy a courtyard villa that backs up to a fairly busy residential street and would like to plant a hedge that will grow 7 ft tall and not too full. Bottle bush has been suggested. Any other suggestions?
Thank you!

Sounds like you want to do, what I have. I didn't plant anything. When I bought this CYV new in 2011 these Holly bushes were part of the landscaping, although they were only 18" tall back then. Now it's a trim job every two months when it's warm.

My neighbors have put in a flush to the wall upright fountain with the water running down. Gorgeous and lit up at night by solar. THey have some bougaenvilla (?) along the wall for color and a mix of green and flowering bushes.

Viburnum may be a possibility. A good garden center can answer questions holly vs viburnum, other options, etc.

No thorns, but there are Holly berries which the squirrel loves. So if you like squirrels, you might see some. Although Holly berries are poisonous to dogs, so if have pets forget about it.

Another option for a quickly growing hedge is podacarpus (plum pine), which is very popular here. I suggest you go to a local garden center such as KB Landscape or Fairfield Farms for good advice and quality shrubs.
