Currently in the process of buying a new home in Marsh Bend and can't wait to close. Since I grill a lot I sure would like to have a grill that runs off the natural gas supply but the house doesn't currently have a hook up for it. The meter is in the front left of the house and the area for the grill is in the back right. Has anyone ever done a gas line installation for a grill? If so, do you start with the gas company or just a general plumber?

Not all plumbers are certified/licensed to run gas lines so you would want to check on that. Also if your grill area is near the kitchen they might be able to drill behind your stove and run it that way as I'm sure you will be paying by the foot..

Looked to have this done myself. Had a hard time getting an estimate. Opted to stick with using propane instead. BBQ frequently(1-2 times a week) and propane tanks lasts 6 months.

yes it can be done , have to run a plastic gas line 24 in underground from gas meter to grill, under all sidewalks and driveway. way cheaper to use propane.

Propane is easier to change when you need a new grill

When we converted house house up north to Nat Gas, I had them install extra nipples in case we wanted to run a line for that, which did a few years later. Best thing we ever did. Even gas flow and never had to worry about running out while cooking.

Can be done without digging up the yard. Gas lines are in the attic, about a 1 to 2hr job to add an outside port. Contact TECO for cost.

That sounds like an explosion waiting to happen when the rib eye hits the grill.

I had a birdcage added when I bought my house. I called a licensed plumber to extend my gas line before the concrete was poured. I then bought a natural gas weber grill. Years later I installed an outdoor kitchen to the lanai and was able to use the original Line installed for my new built in grill. It is so much easier, and no lugging a tank, and never run out of gas. I would always suggest doing this. Just makes life more simple, and as we age, who wants to carry that tank?

Fireplace installers Inc. ran my gas line, pulled permits and handled whole job. They are located in Wildwood. Love it! I bought a natural gas Weber from Ace hardware.

Huh? Is there an explosion when cooking on a natural gas cooktop in a kitchen?

Installed a gas line 2 years ago. Contact a licensed plumber and he will run the line. Just tell him where you want to put the grill. Be sure to buy the Nat Gas version of the grill you want as the gas office is different on each, A propane grill can not be used on nat gas and vice versa. Hope this helps.

No more dangerous than propane, I plumbed my own natural gas to run portable generator. Use approved fittings and sealants check final installation for leaks. No issues.

Not sure but I believe all TV homes are like ours and the gas lines all come through the attic where a junction is located. We had an extension line to our back patio installed by our licensed contractor. The greatest advantage to natural gas is a much higher cooking temperature obtained by increasing the size of the openings on the small brass fittings inside any grill (very easy to do and lots of YouTube videos). Our grill heats up almost immediately and can sear streaks perfectly at 800*.

I have always preferred propane because of its flexibility. I can move my grill here as far as I like to get away from any wind or rain that may be of consequence. I also have a condo in Omaha that has a gas line located perfectly on my deck but I have never and will never use it because, again, I like the flexibility available with my propane grills. In either case I can move my grills 20 feet or more if I like. I probably go through four or five tanks of propane a year. For me, propane is the only answer but that's just me.

So did I. You have to find a length of black pipe which is not too easy to find. Poked through the CBS wall from the kitchen and put a valve inside the house where the gas stove also connects to the gas line. I would not use flexible gas pipe.

Remember when you order your grill, you must get the model made for Natural Gas. It's different (orafices) than the Propane one. No more hassle with empty propane tanks in the middle of your grilling efforts.

Also take a small magnet with you to the store. Make sure the metal is REAL stainless steel. If the magnet sticks, even slightly, it'll rust. My SS grill (HD brand) is 17 years old and still looks brand new.

You can do the job yourself if you're handy and know how to do gas fittings. Otherwise use a licensed contractor.

Yes, works great!

You need a plumber with a license to work on gas lines. Not all plumbers have such a license. A permit will probably be required to run a line to your grill and an inspection will be required once the permitted work is completed.

An earlier poster was correct. The natural gas manifold is located in your attic. A new line to your grill must be run from there. I’d suggest NOT trying to do it yourself. If there is subsequent fire damage, your homeowner’s insurance coverage will be voided!

You don't need to buy a new grill. The contractor can adapt your current propane orifice (by drilling it out) for natural gas.

Get a gas plumber run a line from the meter to the patio and get a Weber gas grill they come for natural gas

Converted my weber grill to natural gas. I'm tired of lugging tanks and finding a place for a refill. My plumber ran a line from the meter to my small patio by the back door to the garage. I use a quick disconnect rubber gas line to hook it to the grill. You need to add a pressure regulator at the grill and you need to replace the jets with a larger size or drill them out. There are kits available online to do this. The natural gas jets are smaller because LP gas has much higher pressure. My grill stays there all the time ready to go and I'm not going to run out of gas. Always happens at the worst time. I had a customer in Miami killed because he stored an extra tank in his lanai that was leaking LP gas, goes to the floor, heavier than air, and when he lit his grill the room virtually exploded killing him.

as a former gas utility worker i never came across gas house piping meeting at an attic junction. For an outside gas meter on the outlet side we would install a 4 way hp tee. One would branch to yhe kitchen ,. The other we would dig a small trench and lay the piping in the earth and run it to the barbecue and or pool. We would perform a manometer pressure test to certify that there were no leaks. Don't understand the concept of centralizing gas piping into the attic

thanks for info. However i would never run a line from the meter to the attic and then back to ground level to the bbq
as far as lightning protection their system does not protect the service line, the regulator, the meter, the outlet piping nor the wall mounted direct hot water maker all outside the building wall

If you have one installed, remember to turn the grill off. I forgot to once and let’s just say I won’t forget again. $$$$$!

to anyone having an outside gas line installed directly to a bbq insist on a quick turn shut off valve before the appliance. .this is the same safety measure that the propane tank shut off valve performs.

I am in Bonita and have natural gas they do run a junction in my house in the Attic of the garage and distribute the gas lines from there to the water heater the kitchen stove the dryer etc also regulators are up there.
I never saw this back home it was new to me it would not have even been legal back home. But I did add on for a outside water heater for my pool shower and a gas line for my summer kitchen and a gas line for my pool heater all from that attic junction.

I had the same reaction. Plus it is CSST in the attic...

But the code allows and there are tens of thousands of homes in The Villages built this way.

Exterior connections and to the attic are black iron pipe. Code addresses bonding to ground.

We used this group as well. We do not have natural gas in our area, so, with ARC approval, we buried a propane tank in the back yard, and lines run to our kitchen, with an extra 'pop up' for the summer kitchen we have now completed. The propane people come on a scheduled basis. but, we can call them if we need them to come earlier. No hauling tanks around

I have a Char-Broil Patio Bistro infared electric outside grill. It cooks as good and food tastes every bit as good as on a natural gas/propane grill with less to no flare-ups. I have one at my summer home which is several years old and still works like new. I just bought another one for our new home here. I would also get their vinyl grill cover. It is the heaviest well made cover ever!

Char-Broil 20602107 Patio Bistro TRU-Infrared Electric Grill, Black: $149.00 AMAZON

Following is a copy of my review on Amazon. Note that a lot of the reviewers do NOT understand how this grill operates.
Food tastes every bit as good as on a gas grill but without the flareups and the hassle of running out of propane. The key to getting that charcoal grill type flavor is to cook some fatty foods in the beginning for the first few times to get the grill "gunked" up and smoking. The more you use it, the better the food will taste. My first grill is still going strong after several years of sitting outside. I would never go back to propane or charcoal.

Just a note about the users who complained about it not getting hot enough. Pay no attention to the thermometer on the lid. This is a grill NOT an oven or smoker. The temperature of the grid is what counts. You are grilling not baking. The ambient outdoor air temp will affect the thermometer in the lids reading rendering it meaningless.

I only cook on the highest setting. Give it at least 15-20 minutes to warm up. My burgers take 10 minutes per side to be fully cooked and steaks take only 5 minutes per side for medium rare. When cooking chicken I usually boil it until almost done and then finish it on the grill. This prevents it from becoming too dry. I do my ribs in the crockpot and then when the bones pull out easily, I slather them with BBQ sauce and finish on the grill.

You can use a heavy extension cord if need be.

I don’t understand it either?

Please don’t look up in some ( I don’t know if all same) CYV attic with gas services. Would want you to have heart attack?

Maybe they make good lightning rods? Especially the thin walled flex hoses? Make you wonder how could meet code in any state? You would of thought they at least had use black gas pipe?

You need a permtit and a plumber with a gas license. Try Torri Plumbing or Kiley & Sons. I highly recommend Weber. Ace Hardware is a very good source, plus they deliver and assemble it for free. Be sure to specify that it is for Natural gas - special order

You may have gas at you clothes dryer as well. But note, the jets in that grill will have to be changed as well. On balance it’s expensive and doesn’t buy you much . Get a second propane bottle and call it a day.
