Vaccine for "compromised" (almost) seniors

Good Morning....I am at my wits end...again! :icon_wink: Are there absolutely no vaccines available for the "compromised" out there? I won't be 65 until May but am currently on Oral Chemotherapy. Any site I try to sign in to kicks me out for age...no area or questions for any medical conditions, yet it advises you to bring a "prescription" from a Doctor if you have a medical condition. The CDC guidelines for vaccinations includes compromised individuals along with the 65 and older group. Am I to understand Florida is not following this? Neither Florida Cancer Specialists or The Villages Health have any vaccines and cannot answer for this. Any ideas?? If not, I will just have to console myself with the fact that almost everyone around me will have been vaccinated so I'm still safer than before, I guess.:)

I'm guessing that there are so many over the age of 65 that have compromising conditions that you would be pushed far down the list anyway. I'm 69 and have coronary artery disease and just finished radiation for prostate cancer. There are tens of thousands like me in The Villages and probably millions in Florida. That's probably why the state decided to go with age only.

When I got my vaccine yesterday at a Publix in Marion County, the employee said the same thing, and that Villages locations will be added. He said to check the Publix web site every morning to watch for the announcement.

Unfortunately you are correct. Gov. DeSantis has decided not to follow CDC guidelines for compromised individuals and ONLY allow the 65 and older group at this time. Not much we can do, since these decisions are being made at the state level.

Have you spoken with your doctor? Mine has told me I cannot get it because my immune system is compromised by my chemo so I am waiting. Guessing when it is ok I will get the shot in the infusion center.

Even if you are vaccinated a person can still be a carrier. I am guessing that under 65 will open in the next few months. Pre existing conditions do not guarantee death from covid. Several people I know have gotten covid with the conditions mentioned and were fine.

You should talk with your doctor. They can and will (if warranted) give you a letter stating the medical reasons why you need to jump the queue.

I regularly discuss getting shots (and really all types of medical care) with my oncologist.

The biggest and most important things which you can do are wearing your mask and staying out of crowds. If you need groceries either order them or go first thing in the day with a goal of being in and out as fast as possible. Avoid out of town guests, especially children.

So many feel they are more entitled and they want to jump ahead in the line..... such a typical human reaction. I bet if they reflect on their past, in general - they demonstrated the same behaviors in much of what they have done in life.

So for those who feel they are entitled to jump the line - please just try to be a good, pleasant human ...... **it really, really, really isn’t that bad**. It isn’t all about just you. Apply the same logic you are always pushing re: wearing masks and distancing - “we are in this together” (until, of course, it comes down to something you want and feel entitled to - then, it isn’t- your attitude is - we’re all in it for ourselves). Sad.

I was eligible because I'm older than 65 so I had my first shot yesterday. Hubby was with me in the car and asked the person at the vaccination site if he could be vaccinated even though he was not 65 but has medical issues which put him more at risk. He was told, "NO". Hubby is going to have to wait until they drop the age requirement. Seems, here in Florida, commorbidities are not part of the eligibility for the vaccine.

One more very important thing you need to know.......The CDC has continued to say that they do not know if a person who does have immunity from Covid virus by getting both doses of the vaccine can or cannot still transmit the virus to someone else. The CDC is telling us that we must continue to wear masks and social distance from others and continue with these precautions so we will PROTECT OTHERS from the virus. The CDC says they will inform Americans when it is safe to stop wearing masks, social distancing and washing hands frequently. Bummer, isn't it?

Bottom line: After I receive my second vaccine shot and wait the proper amount of time for immunity, I will continue to follow all precautions to protect those who WANT the vaccine and have yet to be vaccinated. I will continue to wear my mask in public indoors, social distance from others and keep my hands washed or sanitized frequently. It is up to everyone to make sure we slow the spread of this virus.

You don't have to be a resident of a state to get the vaccine there. Drive to Georgia? These are federal vaccines, and this is why you don't have to be a resident.

I’ve heard many times on the local TV news that people can get the COVID-19 vaccination that have compromised immune systems through the hospital system. Since you didn’t say you talked to your doctors about getting the vaccination, I assume that you haven’t tried that route.

It’s possible to get the vaccination in a different county where you live. Perhaps it is easier to get the vaccination in another county. I’ve heard of people in Lee County found it was easier to make an appointment in the Orlando area, and do the drive to the Orlando area to get the vaccination.

Manatee County set up a lottery system where there are over 90,000 seniors registered. Today, they are giving out 1,000 vaccinations from the seniors selected in the lottery. So, at that rate, it could take over a year, just to vaccinate the seniors, if the rate isn’t ramped up. But I have heard in Manatee County that people under age 65 with health problems can get the vaccination, but they have to go through the hospital system, which will determine if those people can get the vaccination without the 65 and older age requirement.

I hear that in some states they want to start vaccinating school teachers (many of them in their 20's) so that they will feel safe while teaching the children. I guess even the "old" have to wait in line behind the first responders (many of them young) the medical staff (many of them young) and others deemed "essential." Funny how they insist that the young are hardly affected by the virus and that it is very important that the OLD get their immunity because an infection by the virus is often fatal, yet everyone else is "essential" to the day to day operation of our country. It seems to me that if the young are shrugging this virus off easily, then it would be prudent to take care of those in a category that are most likely to take up hospital beds. I say this because I have had almost all my children tell me that they have had the virus, and many of their children have had the virus and ALL of them have recovered from the virus at home in a matter of days and have tested negative and back to work and school. I know that EVERYONE will eventually have the opportunity to obtain the vaccination, but someone has to make the decision who gets in line first and right now, it's everyone BUT the old it seems. Patience is a virtue, right?

My husband, a doctor, received his first shot in December, mandatory as a condition of employment. He had a slight temp that night and went to bed early. He felt fine the next day. He received his second shot on Monday. He’s feeling pretty lousy and has gone to bed early every night. I’m not eligible anytime soon, so maybe waiting a little longer isn’t such a bad thing. I’d prefer to have one shot than two and I’d prefer they study side effects a little longer. I don’t do well with vaccines. I’ve had almost every vaccine you can get serving in the military and deploying to third world countries. While I’d get vaccinated today if they called me, I watched my husband, an otherwise very healthy man, struggling to get out of bed this morning and put on his scrubs and I’m like... yup, I can wait.

Being a responsible adult can be inconvenient, but I agree with you that sometimes, you just have to do the responsible adult thing and accept that you're doing what's right for your neighbors and those less fortunate/privileged. Wearing a mask is nothing more than a minor inconvenience, especially during the season where you can't use "it's too hot to breathe through this thing" as an excuse. Social distancing - well I don't like it when people I don't know get up close and personal with me even when there isn't a pandemic. So I'm HAPPY about that one. As for washing your hands well - if you don't wash your hands a few times every day, you're pretty disgusting.

I just wrote to our Governor about this and hope he does the right thing.
Allocations of vaccine are distributed based upon States population not it's transient visitors. I also know from different sites relatives who are New Yorkers are encouraged to come down to get the vaccine. I'm sure people watched the 30 something family driving from California to try to get the vaccine here since CA is so screwed up.

Hope there's some left for us just under 65 with multiple underlying conditions.

As of yesterday, a little over 4% of Florida's vaccinations have been given to non-residents (26,182).

I know...sounds kinda broad, but I see them next week and I'll ask specifically again, since my issue is the lungs. Good advice, thanks. Actually, I got a FB post today from Florida Cancer Specialists that said they all (the Community Oncology Alliance) are asking for permission of the Governors to administer the vaccine to their patients...as the patients have the need and the practices have the personnel to do so. Makes sense...I hope they get approval.

Well...I wouldn't wish cancer on you any day, or the apparent "entitlement" that comes with it. How rude. In no way did that post express entitlement. I asked a simple question. Should she be bumped, or should anyone else that is over 65 with conditions be bumped by someone under 65? I believe that they set up a limit based on current supply of doses, not to punish any particular group.

You're not "jumping", but asking a question. No, she should be in the first round for "regular" people after health care workers, etc. As should those compromised by other medical issues, as set forth by the CDC. We are ALL the group that requires the vaccine before otherwise healthy people. At best, it will still be first come first served, as far as signing up, etc. The site that allowed access to people not registered was wrong in doing so...absolutely. I hope your wife gets her vaccine soon.
