Those are two of our favorite series of all time. Good, thoughtful, plots in each episode. Ongoing plots related to main characters. Never too violent or nasty. Regular really good touches of humor...even an underlying humorous edge at all times.

We would love to find something similar, ideally with a few seasons already in the can so we can watch it for a while. But we'd consider a new series also.

Your input is appreciated as usual. :)

Do you have prime video?

If so several good detective series to be enjoyed

I liked both of those series. I've got Hulu, so I'm not sure of availability elsewhere. Here's a couple I'd suggest:

Lethal Weapon - G-rated, police drama/comedy. Highly recommended. More "action" than your noted shows, but it's a great show.

Black Sails - R-rated. I like pirates - grrrrrrrrr. Good show but a fair amount of sex and gory violence.

I enjoyed The Good Cop with Josh Groban and Tony Danza in father-and-son lead roles.

Somehow the first season of Black Sails is available on Prime Video. How many seasons are there?

Jack Ryan is a very good series on Amazon.

Black Sails had 4 seasons. I looked and it's not on Hulu any longer, but is on Starz at a price.

I think what Stu was saying was that he saw one season of Black Sails on prime.
There are 4 seasons in the series, all very good. Apparently prime is just showing one right now.

See my post where I recommended Jack Ryan and Bosch.

We are now watching Victoria (about the 19th century queen) and plan to start the Shield when we finish Victoria

I believe Republic of Doyle and New Tricks might fit the bill.

Some others that I recommend are Unforgotten, Endeavour, The Americans, The Night Manager and Bosch. Not so much humor though.

Blacklist is one of our favorites, stars Megan Boone from right here in The Villages! Yes she is one of "The Family".
Longmire is another favorite, and of course everyone loves Kevin Costner in Yellowstone.

Heartland on Netflix. 11 seasons, 18 episodes per season will keep you going for quite a while. Outlander- seasons 1-3 on Amazon video, season 4 on Netflix 5 on Starz 6 being released sometime this year. Weeds and The Ranch on Netflix are also good.

Try “The Blacklist.” James Spader is always riveting in the series. I love his voice and wry expressions. Megan Boone is not, but her grandfather is Gary Morse, and she grew up partly in The Villages.

The best crime shows by far are NOT made in the U.S. (just my opinion). Britbox & Acorn streaming services offer the best in British programming. If you don't mind subtitles Prime has the most foreign language detective shows ever! You would especially enjoy Professor T., a Belgian TV drama series set in Antwerp about an eccentric professor at Antwerp University, Jasper Teerlinck, who is an advisor to the police. The Scandinavian countries make excellent detective shows. You quickly adapt to reading subtitles.

I would give another vote for Longmire on Netflix (6 Seasons) very addictive.

We just finished MONK, and totally loved it too. There is an Australian show called "McLeod's Daughters" that is a terrific, addictive epic. It was the number one show in Australia for years, and I have no idea why it took so long for us to find it. It is on Amazon Prime.:boom:

I agree, McCloud's Daughters is a very good Australian TV program. Also from Australia is "Packed to the Rafters". A good family program. (All 6 seasons Available on Hulu). From New Zealand is "800 Words". Another good family program. (All 3 seasons available on Hoopla which is a free streaming service from the Sumter County Library system; and may still be available on a channel on DirecTV)

"Yellowstone" is good. It is a modern cowboy drama. It has sex and violence in it (if that is bothersome). it shows Native Americans as a spectrum from the very wealthy to the very poor. Same for whites. And some minor parts for Black Americans. It is on Peacock.
........"Alpha house" is a high quality but light comedy about US Senators. It parodies and exaggerates some actual events and has a few real-life politicians come in for small cameos. It is on Prime.
.........."the Expanse" is a good choice for sci/fi fans (very realistic with good graphics) It is also on Prime.
.........."One Night in Miami" is also on Prime. It is from the era when Cassius Clay converted to Mohammed Ali. it imagines the dialogue of a meeting between Ali, Sam Cook, Jim Brown, and Malcolm X. It would be a good watch for history buffs and nostalgia buffs. Some good music by Sam Cook. Also, the acting is very good!

You might prefer "Bosch" which is on Prime and 4 seasons of well-executed crime drama with perfectly cast actors and normally a good dramatic tension in the air. Also. very clever cop-type humor

I prefer subtitles in addition to the audio even for English language films because as I age, I have lost a lot of the high-frequency end of the audio spectrum.

I agree- I like programs with intelligent main characters solving a puzzle. Some of my favorites have been 'Elementary' and 'House' of course. Lots of people seem to love 'Vera' but I find I don't want to get into her head. Lately I've been watching 'Balthazar' streaming on Acorn. Brilliant and very appealing forensic examiner solves crimes, some rather lurid, for the police. It's in French with English subtitles (also fun if you know some French and want to catch up on modern slang and naughty words.

Wish there were more programs with smart characters but it takes smart writers to write them.

Our family likes Leverage. It is on Amazon Prime. Since you're an Ohio Northern Polar Bear, I will share that we watched the show for the first time when the son of the ONU President at the time made a guest appearance. We liked the show and started watching. We were very disappointed when the show ended. We also loved Monk and are currenty working our way through the Mentalist with our son.
