I would like to install a mini split in my garage. I already contacted SunCool to get a quote. I would like to get a couple more quotes from reliable companies.
Anyone have any recommendations? Any to stay away from?

I highly recommend you get a quote from Kalos, 352-243-7099. They recently installed my Mitsubishi mini-split system, garage and lanai. Best price, excellent installation.

We recently had our lanai converted to Florida room.
It appears our hvac system will not be adequate to keep the room comfortable.
Will a mini split handle both a/c and heating?

Yes, as long as it is a heat pump.

Recently installed a mini split put in by Kalos as we did the same project. It does a beautiful job keeping the room cool. We use the heater as needed and it's perfect, does an excellent job keeping the room warm when we need the heater. And, the cost to run is quite low.

Just had mine installed by United Heating and Air, great company, did what they said, extremely satisfied, they carry Mitsubishi and Carrier, I chose Carrier 21.5 SEER unit, real happy, great install and clean up too, from the Sales Team to the install, they took care of all the permits and stuff from the County. Highly recommend them.

I replaced my entire HVAC system two years ago and John’s AC in Ocala was $3000 cheaper than Sun cool.

This was discussed on a thread in June, and Chuck Farrell is now recommending Kalos for install of a mini-split. My neighbor just had one installed in his 8 X 14 lanai by Munns for $3700.

My lanai is enclosed and I installed the split unit myself. It is also a heat-pump and is warming the area well on these cold nights. It is a sealed unit and very easy to install. The only difficult part IF you are not electrical literate is to provide an outside power source. I installed a 110vac unit instead of a 220vac unit so it was pretty easy. Mine has enough power to cool the living room and had to when my central unit was down before I replaced it during one hot summer. There are a couple brands that come sealed so that you don't have to use an A/C guy. One is made by "Mr.Cool." I saved a couple grand doing it myself, but you have to be handy. Relatives spent 3-4K for installation.

Was thinking about that myself a couple of months back but read that it was a bad idea because the unit would just work too hard and not be a help because of the amount of heat entering through the garage doors.

Thanks for the suggestion but if I tried to do this my favorite wife would wind up looking for a new favorite husband.

What's a mini split?
A mini split is a small heat pump unit used to heat and cool a single room, like a lanai. Typically, you attach a linear unit on the wall in the lanai, usually above the sliding glass doors between the living room and the lanai. Then you run refrigerant piping from the unit to an outside condensing unit. That is why it is called a split system instead of a self contained unit. The heated or cooled air is discharged directly from the wall mounted unit into the lanai with no ductwork required.

have had some difficult issues with several companies. However, M&S has been perfect...whole house, Mini-split, etc.

Which insulation did you use? My garage faces West, so I need a high R value. Don't mind doing it myself.
