So, we got "caught up" in the lifestyle of The Villages when we purchased. In Oct. we drove by, Carts4Less on Hwy441/27 to look at used carts lined up. Saw a 2000 Yamaha, 4 seater and purchased from Larry Spayth. From the beginning the cart has had issues. Spouse is mechanic so was able to do some work. Also took it to a person in the Villages that works on them with no luck - so went back after 3 days and asked Larry to take back the cart we paid $4,000 for!! Yes, overpriced but we didn't know, we were basically just taken. Paid cash and Larry delivered the next day (now we know why he was so anxious to get the cart to us). After having to put new tires (Larry gave us 2), new battery, belts, it has an oil leak. The seal needs to be replaced. The Villages Cart shop cannot work on carts this old! Larry says there is nothing wrong with cart! Oil on cardboard in garage! Have to put oil in it after traveling. QUESTION: We need to get the cart back home to NYS. We think it might fit in our pick up truck to get it back home. Anyone have this experience? Does any one know where we can rent a trailer one-way. Local Uhaul does not answer phone. I have contacted the Florida Attorney General's Office and reported Mr Spayth. He is a nice enough guy, but sold us a cart that he really knew nothing about and it is now obvious that the previous owner turned it in due to issues. He should of taken it back and I continue to pursue FLorida administration about this. Again, no paperwork, cash deal, he/we paid no taxes on the cart. So -anyone experience putting golf cart on F-150 6 ft. box pick up truck. Does anyone know where we could rent a trailer to get it home? Yes, we are driving from NY capitol to Florida just to get this cart and rebuild the engine as we were stupid enough to pay $4,000 for a 2000 4-seater cart -- and Larry knew this! Any suggestions would be appreciated. Nancy

I can tell you that I watch Judge Judy and she always says...A used car has no guarantees. You knew it was twenty years old. You paid 4K for it. So......... Our four seater is almost that old, but it did need a major overhaul a couple of years ago. I think you are whistling Dixie trying to get some "justice " here. It is what it is. Golf carts are not registered like cars in Florida...or anywhere else we have lived.

A small engine repair shop MAY be able to replace the seals, but at this point it might be better to just but a new or rebuilt engine (with warranty) and install that. There are a few people in TV that repair golf carts hopefully they will chime in here.
Also you might contact seniors against crime and file a complaint.

So no one in Florida can fix it? Seems like there would be plenty with all the carts here. Anyway I know this are excited when you first come down. We had our cart all picked out before we bought and when we bought we called down to buy it. Picked it up the day we arrived. It was only a year old with 20 hours on it. I would not have looked at something 20 years old but that is me. A few months later we bought a 2nd cart, a 2013 which was $6000 after taxes and all. Not as nice as our first one but doesn’t get used much, mostly by company. Good luck in getting it fixed. It should fit in the truck, just get some ramps and tie downs if the tailgate doesn’t go up.

It will fit in the bed of the f150. You will need ramps to load it. I drove to Winn Dixie in LSL and backed up to the curb on the east side to gain some height from the curb to the bed which kept the ramps at less of a steep angle and just drove it up in the bed. I've done this a few times without a problem. You will also need a ratchet strap to ancor it in the bed.

Get a tape measure. See for yourself. Our 4 seater (all forward facing) is too long for the short bed pickup; including tailgate down.

A 20 year old cart? I'm afraid it "Let the buyer beware". On any vehicle that old I would check it out mechanically, or pay someone to check it out.

When amateur deals with a pro, guess who is going to win. Buy from a resident & but start search with a good mechanic.

I've got a 2000 Yamaha G16 which I converted to 4 seats with a kit from Buggy's Unlimited. Villages Golf Carts in Spanish Springs service it and do any repairs required 'no problem' but I did buy it from them in the first place back in 2002 ...so maybe they do it for me because I'm an old customer.

I have curved ramps that I will sell you for $75. I used them to move a cart a few times but have since sold my truck. The cart will fit in your truck. Send me a PM with your phone number if interested in the ramps.

I think the State would be very interested in the cash sale with no sales tax? Be willing to bet he is not claiming this on his tax return. Maybe threaten to notify the I.R.S. Bet this is not the only sale he has not reported.

If the cart is not registered and no bill of sale. Then why would state sales tax be required? It was (is) a private sake. Ever buy anything at s garage sale? Did you pay tax then?

An old vehicle leaking oil is not the end if the world. It can be fixed for less than the cost of bringing it to NYC. It will still need repair in NYC.
It is unfortunate you paid so much for it, but don't compound that mistake by hauling it all over the country.

I agree with the answer of the expense of driving a pickup to FL and back to NY will cost hundreds. Spend that money on a rebuilt engine or sell the lemon and put all the money toward a mechanically sound cart. That old cart will be a source of irritation for years to come until you finally get sick of spending money on it. Cut your losses and move on. Also to the oh so nice person who had to make the can't fix stupid comment "it must be nice to have gone through life never having made a mistake" at least one you were smart enough to recognize.

You probably have no recourse because you have NO RECEIPT!!! No government agency is going to pursue a action against a business without you having a receipt. Learn from your mistake and move on. Transporting the cart to NY to do repairs sounds crazy. Take a loss now and be done with it. Sell the golf cart at a loss with a written receipt "AS IS with mechanical problems" For the right price someone may want to purchase this cart and invest the dollars needed to repair. A 20 year old cart for $4000 YIKES.
I am a fellow New Yorker and I wish you good luck. Make this a learning experience so its not a total loss.

$4000 for a 20 year old cart? Why not just learn from your experience and donate this to a charity. This would be the best solution for a bad situation.

Check out PODS and UPACK etc - it would probably fit in one of those but you will pay a lot - maybe as much as 2 or 3K to send it to NYS. We are moving from NYS to The Villages and checked them out earlier. It also depends on how long you rent it for. They park it in your driveway, you load it and they pick it up and deliver. You need to find out about a ramp ....good luck

It's a 21 year old golf cart - did you get a warranty with it - probably not - like a used car - these are sold "as is". Sell it - take the loss and have a do - over with what you have learned. The cost of an education can sometimes be pricey.

It might be cheaper for you to contact a shipping company to have the cart picked up in Florida and deliver it to you in NYS. I paid just over $500.00 CAN to have my new 2019 Club Car Onward 4 seater ship from Toronto, Canada to The Villages, FL. Would save you time and the headache of driving there and back just for the cart. I disagree with some of the posts, if your husband is a mechanic it would be worth for him to replace the engine himself. If taken care of, golf carts can last a very long time. Yes, you will need to replace parts and possibly an engine or two but when you do this, you are basically starting with a new cart again. Also, some guys like me, like a challenge like these and take pride in rebuilding old vehicles even if they are golf carts. You may have got scammed with this purchased and I doubt you will get anywhere with trying to get some money back or get this dealership to own-up to the lemon you got. Time to move forward with that lost and think about what the cart can look like after your hubby fixes it just like new. Don’t forget, a new 4 seater cart can’t quickly reach $15,000.00, look at it that way, rebuilding will still save you money.

A cash deal with no paper work.....and no sales tax charged on the sale.......is a serious violation of State revenue laws. It also indicates the possibility of non-reporting of the income to IRS. The seller CANNOT claim that sales tax was "included in the price."
I would give this guy a firm deadline by which to refund your money and take the junk back. Warn him that missing the deadline will trigger a complaint to the Florida Department of Revenue of his illegal business. Then, FOLLOW THROUGH IF HE DOESN'T COMPLY! The Department of Revenue will be very interested.

My thoughts, I wouldn't go to the expense of taking the cart north, you can't swing a cat around here without hitting a dealer and mechanic. If you like the cart, and obviously you do, ask for recommendations for a reasonable mechanic and get it fixed. Sounds like it needs seals, gaskets etc...... for much less than the price of a new cart, you can rehab it.

I feel for you. Moved to TV with all your retirement hopes and dreams ahead of you and something like this happens. The great majority of businesses that surround TV are great people to deal with. Honest people who realize that their relationship with TVer's are vital to their success. Then there's this guy... You have done the community a service by bringing this to light.
Unfortunately, you will also find that there are people on here who feel it's there obligation to tear people down. It's unfortunate.

As mentioned above, you could call Southern Cart Works in Fruitland Park and have them fix it, tell them you won't be back for a few months and they can take as much time as they need. Better than spending money to move it around the country. If you just want to get rid of the problem, call one of those ads in the Sun that say they'll buy any cart any condition. Southern Cart Works would also probably make you an offer, they sell used carts. Here's a link to their Facebook page.

Sorry for you’re predicament. What seal are you taking About? There not easy to get to and some require engine to come out? If cart runs good take engine out and install new seal. It’s lawnmower engine with lot of accessories systems adapted to golf cart.
Some older model engines have tube with two rubber hoses running up to head. If that’s the model it may just may be rotted rubber hose that connects to tube running to head.
You’re not alone many people don’t have mechanical skills should never buy anything over 10 years old and some should never buy anything used if they don’t understand how it works or how to maintain it.
They oil leak just didn’t appear, you should of seen the oil spots when you moved it or seen oil dripping down under the engine. We probably all been bit and learned these lessons. I learned this when I was 18, brought car on looks alone and didn’t have the ability to determine it it was in good condition.
IMO one thing you shouldn’t do in villages is make quick buy of golf cart. There are plenty for sale. Even 3 year old golf cart here can have thousands of miles on them especially ones used to play golf.

Keep trying Uhaul, we have rented a car trailer from them before. Reasonably priced. You might want to check around at some of the local golf cart dealers just to see what they would give you on a trade, maybe you can at least get 1/2 your money back. Good luck

My cart is 20 years old, Yamaha gas and the villages cart shop services it yearly. No problems with it ever. They do and will service a 20 year old cart. We bought it new from them 20 years ago. Never a day of trouble with it, can see no reason to replace it with a new one.
As far as your problem, buy a new motor and replace it, easy and not very expensive to do.

Very decent of you to give this person/people the help they asked for; seems some "reply" only to feature their own superior decision making and pass judgment on anyone who is not as wise as they are and would buy an older cart. I for one was happy to see a sincere person give a sincere answer:bigbow: not just use this to put others down for their "poor" decision. There's still a ray of hope for the human condition I guess...

O'l Larry nailed you. Twenty year old cart. Wow, he saw you coming.
he was great to deal with. I winterized in The Villages 4 months every year. Always got my carts from Larry. Only gasoline carts because I didn't want to deal with batteries. If I had a problem with a cart my Larry brought me out another one, no problem. But we all hit different rough patches in our life. Larry was not a rough patch with me.

I did business with them once and it was one lie after another. A used car salesman is more truthful. If they didn't collect sales tax I would report it to the state tax dept.

I had the same thought. Many on this site are just jerks.

The Department of Revenue will be very interested.
...and the buyer chose to buy a 20-year-old golf cart with a cash sale, no receipt, and knew that they didn't pay the necessary sales tax.
So who's at fault here? The seller, for not putting the sale on the books, or the buyer, for buying a taxable item and not paying tax?
Meanwhile, she supposedly shelled out $4,000 for a 20-year-old golf cart. I mean - you don't pay that much for the average 20-year-old CAR, why would you pay that much for a golf cart that old?
And why in the world would she want to have it shipped to New York? Just leave it here at her home in Florida, and she can have it rebuilt when she gets back down.
There are plenty of places that work on golf carts. And - the Villages Golf Carts absolutely WILL work on a 20-year-old golf cart.
Something is fishy about the entire OP.

Nancy
Salesmen (especially ones that sell vehicles) are NOT nice guys. Trust me, I was one for a short time. They will smile and pat you on the back while sticking the knife in at the same time. Never buy anything without pricing the current market and never buy on the first day of shopping.
I am from PA and can tell you that FL prices for golf carts are ridiculously high in comparison. You could have bought one for "peanuts" in NY.
Unless you are a golfer, you don't need a golf cart in The Villages. Riding around smiling like a little kid on their first pedal car is one of the stupidest things I have seen. Worse yet are the imbeciles who have invested more money than would buy a new car, with their silly golf cart conversion kits, sound systems, AC units, etc. I would be embarassed to be seen in one.
Sell your cart for whatever you can get for it. Then buy a nice convertible in a full size car or better yet, get a soft top Jeep Wrangler to really enjoy the nice weather on the road like a grownup!

I find it much more convenient to use my golf cart, most of the time. I don't have to worry about being stuck at ANY traffic lights on 441, because I just go over the golf cart bridge, and boom - I'm right there in Spanish Springs. No traffic lights at all. And if I want to go to Walmart, I don't have to deal with the 5 SETS of lights to get there by car...
and then the TWO left-turns I have to wait for (sometimes having to wait 2 or even 3 cycles of the lights if the sensor doesn't see my car there and another one doesn't show up behind me for awhile).
I go the back route, ZERO lights, ZERO traffic.
I can get all my groceries into my cart, and I get around 40mpg. I need to fill my cart up with gas once a month, using it almost every day.
It actually takes me longer to get to Publix by car than it does by golf cart.
I don't golf. I think it's pretty silly that some people insist on driving a car only 5 blocks away from home.

"He is a nice enough guy, but sold us a cart that he really knew nothing about"
That is B.S. As a former car salesman at a huge dealership up north, we knew of every problem on our used vehicles, even those that just came in. Did we tell the customers any of that? No way! Somehow amnesia set in when talking to a customer & we just could not remember any previous problems. The guys I worked with would rip off their own mothers (seriously) to make an extra dollar! I didn't have the killer instinct they had so I didn't last 6 months (and glad to be out of it).
