There are business entities that are gouging their customers, especially when it comes to ammunition. The prices have more than doubled in a period of six weeks.
This is a sensitive subject, but please be civil with the comments, if any.

supply and demand ...Unfortunately demand is continuing to soar
One ammunition manufacture stated over 5 million in new gun sales
equates to about 2 boxes ammo per firearm ...do the math

22 ammo has had wild swings in availability it pays to stock up when available. I have a bunch at 3 cents per round but have seen it as high as 12 cents. If you use their range the owner has some reserved for customers. And it helps to get on mailing lists from dealers.

This is just the start of high prices. Try to find a 2021 full size GM, Ford, or Chevy passenger van for sale. There are none and when they finally become available the backlog of buyers will be willing to pay sticker price or more.

Trying to find .22 ammo about 2012 to 2015 was the same way, either very expensive or in most cases it just wasn't available. I bought a Smith & Weson MP 15/22 in 2012 pictured below. I bought a box of 500 Federal .22 rounds at Walmart for $20. Then in Dec 2012 was terrible school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut.

In 2013 I went to all 3 Walmarts in the area and .22s weren't priced high, they just didn't have any and it was like that for about 3 to 5 years or more. I joined the Smith & Wesson message board and this was happening all around the country. I found through that site places that had it online and ordered ammo through the internet. It's only been a year or two now that you can find it in the stores, and now it about $20 for 325 instead 500 rounds.

Instead of spending money on ammo or going to the range, I ended up customizing my rifle. Kind of overdid for a 22, but it looks cool.

Nice satire... it’s all about supply and demand. Many times it’s very temporary and just a matter of getting it from the manufacturer to the customer through the wholesale distribution system. Or in the case of gasoline getting the product through the pipelines to the refineries to the customers. Most shortages are temporary and this one is no different.

7 million new gun owners in 2020. That is part of the reason for ammo shortage. Another factor is Covid 19; this disrupted the manufacturing supply chain. I don't see ammo prices or availablity issues being resolved for "awhile".

I have seen no increase in price or reduction in supply of arrows for longbows or compound bows. I don't use a crossbow so I haven't checked for bolts but I imagine those are "business as usual."

The price for river rocks (used in slingshots) is still low, and small stones (bigger than river rocks) for slings are still free from your back yard.

Thanks! Here is the right side, besides the scope and the laser, I had a red dot sight mounted cantilever style. You can also see the light under the front, there was two pressure pads on the left side held on by velcro, one for the light and one for laser. Also had the quick detachable sling and on the stock an ammo pouch for one magazine. I think I added every option I could find. There is a tripod which is removed in the top photo and then goes on easily in the bottom photo, you can see the flashlight better in the bottom photo.

Gun ownership in America, in three charts — Quartz (/1095899/gun-ownership-in-america-in-three-charts/)

Three percent of the population own half of the civilian guns in the US. It stands to reason, that they're the ones buying most of the ammo also.

I stocked up on Ammo after the first big hit in 2009.

Now that I'm finally moving to TV permanently, I wanted to unload some of it simply because of weight and space.

I sold 1800rnds of 9mm at 50 cents a round to the local gun store who sold it the next day for 55 cents a round and asked if I had any more. The answer is I do, but not for sale.

I also sold a half a dozen 325rnd automach .22lr for $30 each. I paid $8.

It's insane, but I don't consider it gouging. No point to just get rid of it at what I paid for it, I'll just haul it all south.

I have probably 500rnds of 7.62x54R corrosive I'd like to move, too. I sold a couple spam cans of that already too but this is just 20rnd boxes.

That's the thing about "gouging". It works. It loosens up supply that is not being used, it motivates suppliers to source alternatives and prevents people from overbuying. When I bought all my ammo, it was all on sale and clearly not constrained it any fashion.

It's like the whole thing when it comes to hurricanes. Gas should rise, plywood should rise. Otherwise some people will buy twice as much as they need and other people will get nothing.

When Sandy shut down all the gas stations in Northern NJ, all the gas stations that were next to the affected areas immediately went dry, even after deliveries until they raised their prices. You could drive further to save a few bucks. It also encourages the government to loosen restrictions.

If comes with a sort of flash suppressor. Here's how it looks when new with no accessories.

http://www.midamericaarms.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/FB_MP-15-22.png

Some will add a noise suppressor, I haven't looked into that, you might have to change the barrel. It's a 22, so it's not that loud.

https://tactical22.net/sw/MP15-22.jpg

The scope was a UTG Bug Buster Close Quarters scope. It's not expensive, was about $79, that's been a few years now so it might have gone up, bought it on Amazon. A lot of the stuff is Magpul or LaRue Tactical, they both make accessories for AR rifles. Bought some of it from Amazon and some from Cheaper than Dirt. Yes, I've fired it and zeroed the scope, I've not fired it since I added the laser. The Red Dot is a Bushnell TRS-25, it was less than $100. You can still add more, collapsible or folding stocks, the stock that comes with the rifle can be adjusted in and out about 4 inches. Trigger upgrades are popular, all kinds of tripods and bipods. The best place to find out all about the S&W MP 15 or 15/22 is on their message board.

Not to mention GAS prices. Whoooeeeee. Need someone to take a course in economics. But "they" are young, most of them....just charge it. Not the same as cash.

When gasoline prices rise, it affects the price of everything. Every product sold in this country is at one time or another transported by a vehicle powered by gasoline, diesel or jet fuel. The rising cost of fuel will eventually be tacked on to the price of the products. It will also affect the prices of many services as well as they are also dependent on oil prices. Bus fares, taxi fares, the cost of boat and plane transportation as well a delivery services will also go up.

How far does an arrow go?

Mine? When I'm actually aiming at a target, and miss? Around 45-50 yards.

If I ever tried to intentionally shoot as far as it could go, it'd probably be well over 80 yards somewhere into the parking lot behind the range. But I'd get kicked out of the club if I did that, and permanently forbidden to ever shoot at the range again. So I won't do that :)

When I aim, and hit the target? 40 yards, because that's where the target is.

Even quieter than a bow & arrow and very cheap to operate. Pellets and CO2 cartridges are all that it takes and you can shoot it in your backyard. Here's a Crossman 1377 I had custom built by factory on their website about 2013.

Air Rifles | Crosman Airguns, BB Guns, Pellet Guns (https://www.crosman.com/airguns/air-rifles/?caliber=.177)

It was Limited Edition, so I don't believe you can order one anymore, but I've seen 1377s on the internet. If you check their website they might have something else you can custom build. You chose the stock design, which I picked camo, there was black and brown. The length of the barrel was 3 lengths, I chose the longest for accuracy. The color of the barrel tip and trigger, there was gold, silver and black The Caliber either .177 or .22 caliber, I chose .177 because the pellet ranges in TV do allow .22 pellet guns. I added the sling and UTG scope after market, it's a fixed range scope not a zoom like on my S&W MP 15/22 rifle. The rifle was fairly cheap, about $125, and it's pretty accurate at 25 yards.

Ammunition that has been stored in a normal environment has no real shelf life.

I have some .308 that was manufactured in the early 70s that fires without issue.

I have some 7.62x25 tokarev that was manufactured in the 50s that fires without issue.

I have some .22lr from the 80s that I'm still shooting.

Moisture is the enemy. As long as it's not been in a wet basement for 20 years, it's fine.

A close friend of mine has been buying and selling rifles and shotguns for 50 years. He attends gun shows up and down the east coast. The prices have gone through the roof in the past year, as the lines to get into the shows are filled with people that have never owned guns aching to get one for "protection". The gun shows used to be filled with ammo, now not so much. With demand like that, no surprise that there is a shortage of ammunition.
