Munns replaced my AC in July 2019 & Im due for their service in a few months time, price is $79 but then I was asked if I had a new filter. When I said no, I assumed the engineer would bring one, I was told yes & that it’s an additional $50. This seems steep to me. Does anyone know if I can buy the AC filter myself from a store. It is the newer, thicker, longer lasting version of AC filter I think. Thank you.

I've been buying from Amazon for ten years. Generally get 3 filters delivered for $50, just do a search for the size and MERV rating you need.

Be sure to get the correct size. You could remove the old filter and take it to ACE hardware in Wildwood and most likely they can match it with an exact replacement for less $$ than Munns.

I buy mine at ACE Hardware. My size is about $18 and the brand name is Flanders. I bought other brands from Lowes and Home Depot that were a little too large to fit into my unit. You can buy filters online, but they may not fit.

As some have advised you can buy your replacement filters on line. You have to get the exact size however. A casual glance at the “nominal” size 20x16x4 for example could lead you to order the wrong filter. The exact size should be written on the existing filter like 19-13/16x 15-5/8x 4- 3/8

I buy the exact replacement on Amazon, but that I search on the part number for the filter that can be found in your paper work or I think even printer on the unit. The ones I do buy cost me about 60$ for 2 filters and they are an exact size replacement. These are the MERV 11 which is finer then the MERV 8 that is standard. I am assuming you have a 20x20x4.5 filter that is used in most of the units that been installed in the last few years. I would question any filter that cost less then 25$

I'm pretty sure you can buy it elsewhere and for less. Installation is mostly "pull out the old one and put in the new one".
Try this:
* Get the name and model number of your A/C which you'll find as a sticker or metal plate somewhere on the outside of your A/C. (Tip: use your iPhone to take a picture of the sticker or metal plate).
* Search the internet by typing "A/C filter: and then use the make and model number. Sometimes they will ask you for the serial number (which you'll find in your iPhone picture!)
* Check several places, including Amazon. You'll find different prices.
* Check YouTube and you'll find many videos showing exactly how to change the filter. Don't forget to try searching on your make and model - you might find a video for the exact make and model.
I hope this helps!

Thanks. If the size is not exact it will not fit and of course will no do it's job. The thick ones are expensive where as the thin ones are obviously cheaper. But you cannot substitute one for the other. The thin ones need replacing more often.

Measure the size of the filter that is in there, then go online and buy a cleanable filter and you will never have to buy another one again. Just remove it every six months hose it off and replace it.

I think $50 is reasonably considering the filter should last a year and does a much better job of filtering than the one inch filters that have to be changed every two to three months and cost about seventeen dollars if you buy a decent one.

Online is much cheaper. If you have allergies don’t buy anything less then a Merv 13 filter which is a pretty good one. They will last an entire year. I have bad allergies and buy Merv 16 which is just about the best you can get. Costs me $90.00 bucks but to me it’s worth it. Be sure to measure your existing one carefully. You can try Filters.com or discount filters.com.

Never pay them for a filter. Home Depot or Lowes can fix you up with a quality filter which would be way cheaper than 50.00. This would be a rip off on Nunns part. Just know the size by looking at the one in there now. If you don't know how ask a neighbor. Most all folks change their own filters. A couple filters per year is all you need in most cases.

I think for most people, the Merv 8 is the best way to go. The higher efficiency filters can restrict airflow. But, if you use a Merv 13 or 16, they should be replaced more often, not less often, because they will collect more dirt and reduce the airflow through the system.

Have been purchasing from "FilterBuy" online for years...get the filter size off your existing filter, look it up on the company's online chart and buy in ANY quantity the you want. We usually purchase four at a time and it amounts to about $17.50 each (MERV 11) and we change it ourselves every 6 months regardless of Munn's service interval. No muss, no fuss.

We do not know what ac you have so do not know what filter you need. We have a Carrier
you can buy filters at Publix and Sparrs, probably many others. I buy the original carrier filters mail order and they are only a few dollar more than the knock offs. I guess that is what you have as you say newer, longer lasting. The original carriers cost me 79.00 for two-delivered no tax

I usually sneeze between 5 and 15 times every morning and have done so for a long time.. My wife said it might be due to a dirty HVAC filter. I checked my filter which had been in use for over a year and it was pretty dirty. I replaced it with the same make and model MERV 8 filter from Home Depot. I can hardly believe it but I've only sneezed once in the last 4 days much as I hate to admit my wife may have been right about a mechanical hardware issue.

I don't know anything about Sun Kool so they may have a very odd size. If you look around on Amazon, other online stores, Ace, and Lowe's it is likely that you will find a filter with the correct dimensions.
As others have mentioned, don't rely on the size printed on the filter, measure it yourself. This goes for both the one you are replacing and the one in the store. (Obviously, you can't measure the online purchase before it is delivered)

Sun Kool doesn't make HVAC units. They are a contractor who mostly sells Carrier equipment. Some HVAC units use flexible accordian type filters that may not be available in local stores. But, they are definitely available for purchase online, as are any size filter you want. Some filter companies will even make you a custom sized filter. There is no excuse for a contractor to tell a customer that they must buy filters from them. Absurd.

As far as the size of the filter goes, my permanent, washable air filters are custom made. I come to you house and measure the exact size and then order it. Oh, and they are made in the USA!
I don't need a filter, but, just for information, can you make a permanent or throw away filter to replace the expanding, accordion style filters used in some HVAC units? They come in a thin box and you need to stretch them out and slide them into grooves in the AC unit.

Actually, unless it is a VERY unique return there will be a standard (in full inches) filter to fit. I'd bet a 20X 16 will replace the one described above.
Never the less, if you are unsure take it to Ace and let them help. You will still save at least 60% of what any service will charge.

You should consider paying an AC contractor to remove your current filter housing and replace it with the Aprilaire style. They really clean the air in your house and remove almost all the dust which makes a big difference when you clean all your furniture. I'm not an Aprilaire salesperson and speak from real-life experience having purchased this system last year. Next, I replace them as needed by buying them on Amazon. The swap out of the system is about 300$ Replacement filters on amazon are about $40

My supplier has the expandable, accordian style filters. They appear to be specifically made for Aprilaire 1210 and will also fit 2200 and 2120 models. I can ask my manufacturer if they can be replaced by standard filters (pleated paper or permanent).
Please let me know if you want me to check into these further.
Thanks for the information.

Sounds like Munns has a neat way to upsell seniors that are retired.

Thank you.
They replaced a capacitor in my A/C. They charged $170 for the capacitor plus installation and also the charge to come to my house. I have since bought, on-line, another replacement just in case. The cost was $14. I think that about a 1200% markup. Don't bother calling Carrier. I called to get the capacitor model number. They refused to tell me. They told me to call Munns. Now I know why. I use FilterBuy for my filters. First make sure you get the right size. Just because the filter might say 20 X 4 doesn't always mean it's 20 X 4. It could actually be 19 3/4 X 3 3/4. Look for the fine print on the filter. Lastly, very easy to install so don't let that bother you.
