Hello, My wife was recently diagnosis with a heart arrhythmia and the physician recommended she have a Cardiac Ablation.
We saw Dr. Vatsal Inamdar at Village Heart & Vein and were more than satisfied with his credentials, demeanor, knowledge and personality. However I am of the belief of “measure twice, cut once.” I believe since our insurance allows it that we obtain a second opinion at Shands in Gainesville.
Has anyone had this procedure, know of Dr. Inamdar, and what facility did you use? Please be kind with your responses we are both in need of compassion right now. We appreciate all the info we can obtain.

For my osteoarthritis, I've had two spinal ablations (lumbar - right side, left side) and that was quite effective and easy on me (a 2 on a 1-10 scale). It worked so well that I've got two more scheduled for my thoracic area (mid-back). It's really just a needle device and not intrusive, a band-aid was used at the end of it. I realize spinal is not cardiac, but they seem similar from webmd - Cardiac Ablation (Catheter and Surgical): Procedure, Risks, Recovery (https://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/atrial-fibrillation/what-is-cardiac-ablation)

My husband had this done back home and it helped somewhat but did not cure the problem. He still requires medication to slow down his heart rate and is checked every six months.

Everyone's outcome is different.
I had an ablation done months ago and after 4 afib episodes in the first 2 weeks I have not had afib since and I am off medication since I had the ablation. Horray

A friend of mine in her late 60s had a cardiac ablation surgery done at Duke about a year ago for serious A-Fib. When she was there she noticed several patients were back for a second operation and discovered that not to be uncommon. She may already have to go in for a second operation as her A-Fib is back although not as severe as it was before the first procedure when it was very bad.

Hi Carla,
This is Gloria. I want you to know how deeply I appreciated your kind response. I was totally confident with Dr. Inamdar, he was very personable. My husband and I decided that a second opinion was the best choice. I am beginning the search for an Electrophysiologist at Shands but still may use Dr. Inamdar. He did a extended fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, among others so I feel he must know his stuff.
My lack of confidence lies in the choice of hospitals, The Villages or Leesburg.
Thanks once again, wish me luck. Prayers always accepted too!

My son was diagnosed with Afib at the ripe young age of 30 and had an ablation. It was in KCMO at St. Luke's. It has a wonderful cardiology hospital. Back to the ablation - he had a few episodes the first three months or so, but nothing like when we first learned he had Afib, which was very scary. The fear has lessened and he has not had any serious episodes since. I think your wife will feel a lot better afterward.

My husband had three ablations they do a little at a time depending where it’s coming from. You need a electrophysiologist not a cardiologist. Electrophyrologist has advanced degrees in heart surgeries

Good Morning,

I suffered with AFIB for many years until I came down to the Villages! My doctor was Citrus Cardiologist recommend a doctor that only specializes in heart ablation! His name is Dr. Kenneth Yamamura! He is located in Tampa, Fl! He is absolutely wonderful! Here is is website! Interventional Cardiac Consultants – ICC (http://iccheartcare.com/)

Since my surgery 3 years ago - I have not have any AFIB attacks at all! I was in surgery for almost 6 hours - which totally changed my life for the better!

Sending prayers for a speedy recovery!

Girlfriend had in done in Orlando by Dr Peter Taylor... an electrophysiologist .. she suffered with SVT for years and is in PERFECT shape now. Highly recommend getting a Dr that is well experienced on AFIB/SVT. a short drive to a big city may be worth it

I had cryoablation for atrial fibrillation in NY a before I came to The Villages and no issues in past 4 years! It freezes rather than burning.

My husband had AFib really bad and ultimately had the ablation done in Tampa by a surgeon Dr. Herweg, who specializes in ablations. I believe that is pretty much all he does. Tampa has a terrific reputation for cardiac surgery. I would have surgery there, not in The Villages. BTW, his cardiac doctor in The Villages recommended the Tampa surgeon. This was about 10 years ago.

Depends what the arrhythmia is. I had an ablation in 2013 for SVT by a doctor in NY. I was in overnight because I had a vascular scan done the next day. They go through your femoral artery in your groin. You don’t feel anything related to the ablation. I had back pain from laying in the table for an hour. Had to do follow ups frequently for 6 months and then every 6 for 2 years. Now I go annually. Have not had any issues since and the arrhythmia is gone.

Definately find a doctor that has done these before. He should be a Electrophysiology which is the electrical system of your heart not a vascular which deals with the vessels and blood flow.

My husband has been going to Dr. Inamdar now for about 3 years. We both trust him explicitly. He is very caring, and immensely knowledgeable in his field. He was highly recommended to us by several cardiologist, which is why we ended up going to him for my husband’s heart issues.

We’ve known several people who have had ablations. Sometimes you need repeat procedure(s) down the road. But studies have shown that they are successful 75 - 90% of the time. Good luck to you. Hope you are back to good health soon.

Hi we are Brits. I had this procedure in the UK about 6 years ago. It was fairly straightforward. I was put partly asleep - not fully. A probe was inserted in the thigh through to the heart. I only noticed the burning sensation slightly on a couple of occasions. They boosted the sedation when that happened. All in all it was painless and at the time very successful. Unfortunately I was one of the small percentage thar had a recurrence of the AF. It led to a stroke 18 months ago. But fortunately the long term impact has been small.
So I would say it’s well worth doing and the risks are quite low.

Dr Luisi at Jacksonville Baptist Medical is excellent. My husband has an ICD & pacemaker attached to the ICD.
He had VTACH & AFib. Afib is much easier to get at for ablations. We had been going to another Dr who kept doing ablations. Dr Luisi arrived & first day put in an ICD & later added a pacemaker. He was a breath of fresh air. He will give you your options & then what he thinks is best. My husband still needs a med to keep his VTACH from rising. My husband had an heart attack at 50 & lost 55% of his heart. 18 years later he had VTACH problems. Then AFib & VTach. His ekgs are very hard to read due to his 1st heart attack
After quadruple heart surgery the dr went on vacation. Dr Luisi started his first day. He saw how damaged my husband's heart was & immediately put in a ICD. A couple month's later my husband's heart began racing so he put in a pacemaker. Now the pacemaker corrects the heart rate when it goes off. It pacemaker can't fix it then the ICD shocks him. I am so glad that other doctor went on vacation. After his vacation the hospital let him go.
Baptist Medical Downtown Jacksonville is an excellent heart hospital.
Dr Luisi said it doesn't matter what medical facility. It comes down to the best doctor. He is the electro guy.

Is this for Afib? If so, is it paroxysmal (happens occasionally in episodes)? Or is it chronic? Also, she has to be able to tell (feel) when she is in Afib. Some people don't feel anything. I meet all those criteria. Mine is paroxysmal and I can feel immediately when it happens.

If she has paroxysmal Afib and can feel the flutter in her chest, write to me privately. I have had paroxysmal Afib since I was 32 (I'm 63 now). I refused the pills offered and instead looked for the cause of my Afib. While I did identify a couple of possible triggers, I also accidentally found a way to quickly convert back to a sinus rhythm. I shared it with doctors but they dismissed me because they can't make any money off of something that works without any help from the medical industry. It takes less than 30 seconds usually. It's been over 30 years since my first episode. I don't take any blood thinners or heart regulating drugs (or any drugs for that matter). I also don't even have a cardiologist. If you have Afib and can convert back to a sinus rhythm quickly, you effectively don't have it or the risks associated with it (stroke). I do reserve ablation as a possibility if my technique ever stops working. So far, it has been 100% effective 100% of the time.

As a retired cardiac nurse I can tell you an ablation is a relatively safe procedure to basically (in English, not medical speak) cauterize the areas of the heart signal system to resolve arrhythmias - significantly decreasing risk for strokes.

My wife had afib. She was treated by Dr Inamdar. He transferred to Tampa, where he performed the ablation. He is a great Dr.,that’s why we followed him to Tampa. The operation was a success. Only one episode within 6 months. Since then he came back to the Villages and continued seeing her until she passed, from a totally different illness

Dr. Imandar did my husband's heart mapping, ablation and pacemaker/IED two years ago. He is a kind and competent physician. We would recomend him highly. His followup with him was spot on. He's been out of AFIB for two years now with good meds. May it be the same for you.

A-fib sucks, I know I have it. Dr Inamdar did my ablation several years ago and it has worked right up to a few months ago when I've had 2 occasions of A-fib in the last year. Saw him again recently and he thinks I may need another if only to look around but was not in a big hurry to put me in the hospital, (requires and overnight stay) because of all the Covid around. Will see him in March and by then have had my two shots for Covid. We'll go from there.

Hi know it’s not the same but Dr Inamdar put in my pacemaker a few years ago. When the ambulance brought me to The Villages Hospital, my pulse was down to 22 and there was a cardiologist waiting for me. He brought Dr Inamdar in to do the procedure. He did a great job, I was very pleased with him and I’m still feeling well.

Dr. Celso Acevedo is THE best. Has a satellite office in Lady Lake. Performs at Ocala Regional. The hospital wanted him so much so that the built a brand new cath lab to his exact specifications. Had an ablation in 14. No problems since. Highly recommend Dr. Acevedo.

I had a cardiac ablation done. I went to Shands and saw Dr. Miles. He’s fabulous and because of that you might have to wait a while to get an appointment. He came recommended to me by my Doctor Who had the same procedure done by Dr. Miles. I am very happy with it. I haven’t needed another one done so far and it has been over four years. I understand 50% of the people do have to have a second procedure done. Maybe if they do it right the first timeYou won’t have to have it redone. I had both the atrial flutter and the atrial fibulation taken care of. Hope this helps.

Hello to every one who responded to our request for knowledge, personal experience and suggestions, regarding my cardiac ablation. I contacted my Cardiologist who had originally referred me to the wonderful Dr. Inamdar, and he has now scheduled me with a Dr.Vilma Torres an Electrophysiologist at Shands. I will make my decision based on which Dr. I feel is more competent, with me their personality is a big plus as I’ve always used humor to mask my fears.
I wish to thank you all for sharing your experiences, input and advice. It meant more to me than I can relay to know that I’m not in this alone. I am a truly private person who does not often ask for assistance, but with this issue I felt so frightened and alone. You all made me feel confident that it will all be well. Blessings to you all.

I highly recommend UF Health Cardiology, associated with Shands in Gainesville. My first ablation was done locally in May, and my afib returned within less than a week, and was worse. I was in afib much of the time, and completely exhausted and weak; and for a month my thighs were horribly bruised, very swollen and painful, as well. I sought a referral to Shands, and had a second ablation at the Heart & Vascular Hospital there in November. The team was wonderful; and only small, minor bruising about the size of a quarter at the incision sites, compared to the previous experience. After several weeks I experienced normal sinus rhythm much of the time, and after 6 weeks I was able to walk 2 miles, with no more afib. I know each person is different; however, for me, I will always seek a major hospital for any procedure, and in this case, an academic hospital where the physicians are also professors teaching the subject, many involved in research, and where I believe the best, most recent techniques are practiced.

Experience, experience, experience. That is the key to have the best chance for a successful outcome. Look for an EP who has done THOUSANDS of ablations and who has a high record of success. I had a pulmonary vein isolation ablation done in 2017 by the head of the electrophysiology department at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, NY. No episodes since then. Hopefully I will remain a “one and done.” Got back my life. Do a thorough search and good luck!

Just saw your post. I have Dr. Inamdar as my Electrophysiologist and I find him to be “top notch” he did my Heart Ablation about 5 years ago shortly after his arrival in TV. Everyone is different with varied opinions. I was a CEO of a multi Health Care Teaching Hospital, so I may have different expectations for myself than others. Mine was done at the Leesburg Hospital. I was in the Cardiac Unit and the care, entire staff was excellent. Nursing Staff had nothing but praises for Dr. Inamdar. The only medication I take is Eliquis. It is not unusual to have the Heart Ablation more than once. PM me if you have any questions

I have a fib and had a heart ablation in November. The procedure was a piece of cake. After the procedure they take you back to recovery where you have to lay flat on your back for 4 hours and not lift up your head. Then after the 4 hours you get to go to your room. The 4 hour thing was annoying because they never told me about that before the procedure. You get to go home the next morning. I have had 0 episodes of a fib since it was done and no pain from the procedure. Dr Acevedo from Ocala did my procedure. I liked him. Good luck
