Twice on TV I have seen the video of Dr. Fauci with his message about being vaccinated. In the video, Dr. Fauci is encouraging people to be vaccinated and what he says is confusing to me. He said "being vaccinated will not only protect you but it will protect your family and also protect your community".

My confusion lies with the fact that we are being informed to continue to wear masks and social distance even after we have received full immunization and achieve immunity. This is because it is not known yet if an immunized person can still transmit the virus.

I'm not sure what to make of this as they are opposing views.

We have heard too many confusing statements the past year from the great doc that I know when he says something, it’s going to be more confusion. I think he loves all the tv time he can get. The vaccine doesn’t mean your not going to get sick from COVID but may lesson the severity of the virus. Therefore mask should still be worn. In fact to cover themselves from looking ridiculous, you should wear 2 or 3 mask or maybe the government will issue an extra thick mask for added protection. That way possibly not too many people will get the virus even after getting the shots. To protect their views to get everyone vaccinated. Some may not believe but I was hearing this on the radio from one of the “ get vaccinated gurus”. The mask will be recommended for a long time. Who really trust anything the politicians say or their sidekicks? They gave us some certainty that mask won’t be needed after shots were given, to push the idea of no more mask! It all changes!

I think that'd clear up the confusion. The less likely any of you are to get the virus, the less likely any of you are to spread the virus. Even if that reduced risk isn't immediate, it will, at some point, be a reduced risk of spreading as a direct result of vaccination.

I didn't find anything unclear about that. I just added the word "ultimately" and it made total sense. That's pretty much how vaccines have worked historically to eradicate or drastically reduce the risk of spreading pretty much every illness that you can be vaccinated for. The more people with the vaccine, the less likely anyone will get sick. Including family and friends.

But at this stage in the game, "reduced risk" does not mean "100% immunity." So you maintain social distancing and mask wearing and hand sanitizing to cover your bets.

What the 95% efficacy rate means that there are people who the vaccine will not work for. Since people are not being tested afterwards to confirm they have the antibodies, then one doesn’t know for whom the vaccine worked or not. Also, no one knows how many antibodies anyone got, how strong they are going to be, and how long it is going to last. Another concern is the variants, which reduces the efficacy of the vaccine. Both Pfizer and Moderna were tested with the coronavirus that was available at that time. Unfortunately that coronavirus strain is no longer the primary one. Thus, to protect oneself and others, one needs to continue to social distance, wear a mask, clean their hands often.

What Fauci said which I have not found to be true is that the current vaccines will stop replication of the virus. The RMA viruses do not work in that way. What they do is programs the cell to produce antibodies to make one less likely to get sick, or if they do, have weaker symptoms. Agree. Also, it is possible the 95% number is more like 60-70% when faced with the new virus mutations. So the idea is to get everyone vaccinated as soon as possible, because that gives the virus less of a chance to mutate. And in the meantime wear masks for the reasons stated above. If we can get everyone on board with that, we can defeat this thing. Scientists are exploring a booster shot to combat the mutations. Once we do that, scientists say we can reach herd immunity. This is better than letting people die to achieve herd immunity. From what I understand, this "vaccine" works very differently than all other vaccines. Some doctors say that it's technically not a vaccine.

While vaccines give you immunity from contracting the virus, this one prevents the virus from using your body to replicate itself. If the virus can't replicate, it can't make you sick.

But it sounds to me, and I am not a doctor or scientist, that you may still contract the virus but it can't hurt you. So if you are carrying the virus, you can possibly transmit it to others. It seems to me that once everyone that wants to be vaccinated is, then we can stop wearing masks.

Mask wearing and vaccination are not different topics. Wearing a mask is to protect others. (Even though most people still believe it protects them) Vaccination protects you, but it is necessary to build herd immunity—I.e., protecting everyone.

There are only 3 ways out of this:
Containment: no longer possible. That’s what lockdowns, social distancing, mask wearing were for. Didn’t work.
Infection: just let everyone get it. Unconscionable
Innoculation: get vaccinated, herd immunity.

My opinion re: getting the vaccine and continuing to wear masks.
Reality makes most things truly simple. We are being told to wear masks.
No shortage of opinions of how effective it is etc. In any case it is self enforcing
most people do not want to be the stand out in the crowd-the mob. Far easier if everyone is wearing a mask rather than say a store keeper needing to insist you either wear a mask or show PROOF that you have been vaccinated.

Which pretty much applies to all of us, vaccinated or not. Any of us could be exhaling or have on our surface Covid particles. It is the amount of those particles that you might get that could determine infection. Duration of contact along with load are the keys.

You state "we are being informed to continue to wear masks" by who? Every “Tom, Dick, & Harry” has an opinion. Many of these people do NOT understand the scientific facts regarding vaccinations and have thrown rational thinking out the window!

Vaccines train our immune systems to create proteins that fight disease, known as ‘antibodies’, just as would happen when we are exposed to a disease. Even people without symptoms develop an immune response. - WHO (World Health Organization)

A person who is now immune cannot get or give the disease. The COVID virus is NOT one of those diseases in which an immune person can be a carrier.

Myself, my family, my neighbors, and millions of others have already had COVID and are naturally immune. We do not need to wear a mask.

I have stated this fact before but there is always someone who points out that we may not be immune against the new variants of COVID. On January 25, 2021, Moderna published a press release announcing that their vaccine is effective against the B.1.1.7 variant. Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech both said their vaccines were effective against new variants of the coronavirus discovered in Britain and South Africa.

There will always be those whose irrational fears due to the media's bombardment of the worst case scenarios have eclipsed common sense. Johns Hopkins University of Medicine's COVID Research Center states the percentage of deaths in the U.S. due to COVID is 1.7%. Yes, you can find other studies with higher death rate percentages but they are all still quite low.

I am not going to wear a mask forever in fear of the ever mutating variants of viruses. Enough is enough!

That figure may be right for someone under 40 years of age but for those of us over 55 the recovery rate is somewhat less and significantly less for those over 65 (the group currently eligible for the vaccine)

There are approximately 80 million people who are not being vaccinated because they are under the age of 18 and have not been cleared to get it. Add the people who are not advised to get it for medical reasons and then the ones who refuse to get it and herd immunity is questionable. By the time the 18 years and under crowd would become eligible for the vaccine it will have been determined that it is safe for them to get it. As much as I don't like it, it will be a surprise to me if Covid vaccination doesn't become a requirement for attending public school.

Herd immunity will take care of itself. Those that want to get vaccinated and those that will be required to be vaccinated will be. Those that refuse to get vaccinated will either get lucky and not contract the virus or will become part of the herd the natural way. For the most part, the virus will only be a risk to those who choose to be at risk.

We have heard too many confusing statements the past year from the great doc that I know when he says something, it’s going to be more confusion. I think he loves all the tv time he can get. The vaccine doesn’t mean your not going to get sick from COVID but may lesson the severity of the virus. Therefore mask should still be worn. Twice on TV I have seen the video of Dr. Fauci with his message about being vaccinated. In the video, Dr. Fauci is encouraging people to be vaccinated and what he says is confusing to me. He said "being vaccinated will not only protect you but it will protect your family and also protect your community".

My confusion lies with the fact that we are being informed to continue to wear masks and social distance even after we have received full immunization and achieve immunity. This is because it is not known yet if an immunized person can still transmit the virus.

I have never had the Flu in my lifetime and haven't had the Flu vaccination in over 50 years. I got my COVID vaccination but I have no intention of ever getting it again. No one makes you wear a mask during flu season and what is the percentage of those getting the flu shot every year? No one gets a little white card saying they have had the flu vaccination every year so that they can travel or enter a store to shop for groceries. Time for all the fuss to stop and for everyone to see if they are of the 1% effected or the 99% that shrug it off. People who live in trailer parks are at much higher risk from injury and death due to strong winds. People who live in low lying coastal areas are at much greater risk of severe and life threatening flooding. What the 95% efficacy rate means that there are people who the vaccine will not work for. Since people are not being tested afterwards to confirm they have the antibodies, then one doesn’t know for whom the vaccine worked or not. Also, no one knows how many antibodies anyone got, how strong they are going to be, and how long it is going to last. Another concern is the variants, which reduces the efficacy of the vaccine. Both Pfizer and Moderna were tested with the coronavirus that was available at that time. Unfortunately that coronavirus strain is no longer the primary one. Thus, to protect oneself and others, one needs to continue to social distance, wear a mask, clean their hands often.

What Fauci said which I have not found to be true is that the current vaccines will stop replication of the virus. The RMA viruses do not work in that way. What they do is programs the cell to produce antibodies to make one less likely to get sick, or if they do, have weaker symptoms. That is not what I think has been explained in many news reports and articles that I have read and how I understand it. People who know a hurricane is coming, don't all march out into the town square, without their raincoats, cell phones uncharged or left abandoned in their cars, and proceed to dance the night away in the middle of the storm.

What do people who know a hurricane is coming do?

They make sure they have enough supplies, get more if they don't have enough. They bring the supplies home, and they stay put out of the rain until either the storm is over, or until the weatherman says it was a false alarm. Now compare to Dr. Fauci and masks:

Dr. Fauci learned the storm was coming. At that time, he knew that masks were at a premium, and knew the priority needed to be with the people taking care of everyone else. Of course people didn't bother to listen to him, and bought out entire stores' worth of masks, toilet paper, paper towels, sanitizers, rubbing alcohol, leaving people who actually NEEDED that stuff for their weekly use (including people who use catheters, who need rubbing alcohol every day), with nothing.

Then, Dr. Fauci learned from the medical scientists and researchers, hey - masks are useful, and important, let's promote that to the public. Which - he did. He said "hey - that information that we TOLD you was incomplete at the time? Well it's complete now. Wear the masks."

He hasn't really stepped back from that. He still promotes mask wearing as one major method of risk reduction.

From what I understand, this "vaccine" works very differently than all other vaccines. Some doctors say that it's technically not a vaccine.

While vaccines give you immunity from contracting the virus, this one prevents the virus from using your body to replicate itself. If the virus can't replicate, it can't make you sick.

But it sounds to me, and I am not a doctor or scientist, that you may still contract the virus but it can't hurt you. So if you are carrying the virus, you can possibly transmit it to others. It seems to me that once everyone that wants to be vaccinated is, then we can stop wearing masks.

If there is a doctor or scientist on this forum that can explain this better or contradict what I'm saying, please do so.

The question you ask is a wise one. Immunity is complex. Every year a better understanding of the multiple pathways by which we fight off disease is gained. Vaccines AKA immunizations, work because they expose your body to the disease causing organism, or some part of the disease organism. This exposure triggers your body to create two kinds of weapons to attack the disease. One kind is antibodies, this is the kind most often measured to see if you are "immune" to the disease. But there are also other responses mostly involving creating cells that attack the organism in one way or another, the most common are t-cells.

Some vaccines actually use the entire organism either weakened or killed. Polio and chicken pox are examples. Some vaccines instead have lab created proteins which are mimics of critical proteins from the disease organisms, Hepatitis B for example. The two new mRNA vaccines take a third approach. Instead of making the critical protein in the lab then injecting it, they have your body make the critical protein. The effect is the same.. your body is exposed to a foreign protein [in this case a spike protein].

Don't get too focused on contract vs replicate. For a virus, or bacteria, to make you ill there must be enough disease organism to produce symptoms. Once you are protected by a vaccine you can still have that germ get into your body, over and over. Once the germ is in you it is a race to see whether the germ can multiply rapidly enough to make you ill versus your body's immune system hunting down and killing the germ before it reaches the level of clinical illness. So a fully "immune" person can still have the germ enter their body and begin to multiply or replicate.

Interestingly each time you are exposed to the illness, it is expected that will act as a natural booster. There is no data yet that can tell with certainly how long a person who had clinical Covid will have protection from the disease. And similarly for someone who has been vaccinated.

People who say "I've had Covid so I can't catch it" are 100% wrong if by catch you mean have Covid enter your body and replicate. People who on this website tell you that you will need a booster have no science to support that, yet. People who tell you that you will not need a booster have no science to support that, yet.

If the CDC in a year declares no boosters are necessary, they may come back a few years, or months later and say boosters are necessary. That would be because the data changed. One reason it may change is once there is less circulating Covid we all will have fewer community exposures, thus fewer booster events.

I have no intention of wearing my mask after my second shot. And I have no intention of getting boosters in the following years. Folks on here keep saying that you wear the mask to protect other folks. Sorry, but I do not have the virus and I do not carry the virus. How do I know? Because I have not passed on the virus to my spouse, my children, my neighbors, my in-laws or my siblings. All of them have been around me with none of us wearing masks at one time or another. You know, I already responded to this post but it really nags at me that people, supposedly with intelligence, are allowed to continue in public with minds that work like that.
