View Full Version : Question about windshield styles

I'm about to order a new cart and wonder what style windshield would be best. It seems there are 3 choices.
1) the regular flip down in the middle style. 2) flips down in the middle but has the "slide across" opening vents for when window is up but allows some air. OR 3) the "newer" style that has the smaller flip up style down at the bottom
Option 3 does not allow any flip down of the top window for "big airflow" and someone who has style #2 says the slide grates get dirty and are hard to clean.
There is no difference in price so curious as to what others like or dislike about the different styles. Thanks!

My cart will be ten years old this summer, I've had the basic fold-down windshield the whole time and that's all they offered then. It will probably give you as much air as you can stand when it's folded. Some people will buy a pop-in screen, you can find them at Ace for about $20, I've never had any bug problems when it's folded.

My neighbor who I use to sometimes ride with before Covid to the gold course has these slots with the sliding covers. I don't really find much air coming through, if it does, it's not up by your face. He still folds down his windshield when it's hot and that blocks the slots anyway.

I've seen carts that have almost a 3 piece windshield, whereas the bottom will pop forward. That might work good, with the air flowing over the cowling and maybe up toward your face, you could keep the top closed and still have air. I haven't spoken to anyone that has one.
I also have a 12v fan that provides some air when you're sitting still. I bought it on the Home Depot website for $30 and run the wire down to the 12v Cig adapter plug.

My wife's, top 1/2 flip down. Mine, bottom 1/4 pops open. Mine can be hot and limit air flow on the passengers. The air flows in, up to the ceiling and out the back.
Friends have the slide vents...............they are really hot and air flow sucks.

My wife didn’t like the 1/2 flip downs, the spilt line was right in her field of vision. So I got the flip out at the bottom that moved the spit down out of her vision. Plus I can adjust the amount of air flow coming up.

Go for the flip down great on the golf course on hot days . A nice breeze from hole to hole. Open road to windy for me. Nice air flow in over the top when in up position .

I've got the half flip down version - a friend of mine made an oblong of plastic tubing with 'elbow' corners I can pop this under the screen halfway down it's folding and leaves the screen totally flat and level. This is now a great tailgating 'table' for watching sports wildlife attending outdoor gigs etc.

My wife did not like the half flip down from the top, because the center bar was right in her line of vision. We got the new windshield that flips up from the bottom. It definitely
improves your vision by not have that center bar. As for air flow, we get plenty of air flow with it open at the bottom and we don't need a screen for bugs.

I love mine with the sliding window grates. Lets you get air without being blown away from having the window flipped down while you drive. Great for hot weather days. Doesn't get all that dirty. Had mine for 3 years.

I got my Yamaha at Carts and Clubs. My windshield folds down from the top and at the bottom of the lower windshield, there is a portion that flips up for air flow. I like it cause when it rains it doesn't come in like in the sliding vents of the other style.

I got a new cart last year I got option 3, it has two position and gives you plenty of air without a full frontal blast in the face and you don't have that dreaded line where it folds down.

We have the lower flip up style. I was skeptical at first, but we really like it. It has plenty of air flow, almost like a fan on when you are moving. We didn't want the line across the middle of the flip down. Happy with our decision.

IMO the one that flips up from the bottom is the best as it gives more air than the slide. The half fold down wind shield has to be the worst. In the open position you’ll be eating bugs and no air when it’s closed not to mention the hinge areas restrict view of shorter drivers

The last choice is best for shorter operators. The hinge in the middle of the windshield blocks the view while driving, especially on hills terrain.

The type of windshield you get also depends if you are here in the summer. If not, get one that works best for you. If here in the summer, you will need AIR and lots of it.

We have the full view window with the 7” flip up at the bottom. I really disliked the windshield that bent in the middle. It’s right in my line of sight. Maybe no big deal on the golf course but we don’t golf. I think that is a lousy design. Also installed extra lights above head lights that point 45 degrees left and right and down toward the edge of the road so you can see better when approaching some of the tunnels. The snow plow was just in case.

Obviously, it is opinion. You list three, there are more than that. We have the type that
folds down. Depending on going up hill of not, I find looking through the joint annoying.
As to hard to clean the three mentioned are all plexiglass-plastic. It is hard to clean and when you clean it you cause fine scratches. I don't know the cost, I expect far more than plastic, you can purchase real tempered glass windshield. Glass being far harder
than plastic so it will not scratch. Rain is common in Florida. A glass windshield would allow you to get a car like windshield wiper.
We have the plastic type that folds down. Not sure why but we never use it folded down. Cooler? Any of the mentioned vent systems, if, they help they only work when the cart is in motion. In motion no matter what you choose you have a 20 mph breeze.
My main issue was the bar that goes across the windshield and blocks visibility. I got a solid windshield, have super visibility, and don't really have any issues with playing golf in the summer heat without "air flow"---the rest of the cart is wide open!!!

I have the original fold down windshield, those who have option #3, the pop out bottom windshield, where did you get it? Did come with the cart, or you had it installed aftermarket, and if so, do you remember the price and where you bought it. I would interested, especially since my windshield is almost ten years old and it getting a bit cloudy.

I bought my cart used and the previous owner had a screen made at a hardware store. Velcro holders it in place. I don’t use it much but I’m a snowbird maybe I’d use it more in the summer months.

I have option 2. I have high back seats so I a little higher so the line in the middle when the windshield is folded down does not bother me. I can see where that would be annoying if you were shorter and it was in your view. With the windshield up the little slots didn’t let enough air in. I like the windshield folded down with a screen. With the windshield folded down without a screen I thought the big air was too much blasting in my face. With the screen installed it cuts the blast of air down somewhat becomes “just right’ airflow for me.

Number two is what I have. I have a 2020 Yamaha with Curtis cab. If it is warm and raining out the inside windows steam up. Opening the vents and back window allows air flow so the inside does not steam up as bad. Also, hot weather on golf course, flip down the windshield. Not on golf course with someone concerned about wind blown hair, vents provided air flow, but not at head.

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't see any photos on Carts & Clubs website that displayed the windshields clearly, but on their Facebook page they have three kinds of windshields and two fold down from the top, one version has the slots and the other pops out from the bottom. It appears a third version has slots but is one piece and doesn't fold down.
This version folds down or pops up from the bottom, but you apparently can't have both since the rubber bumpers for the windshield when folded down are on the pop out.

They also offer the big cooler I bought from TV at LSL a couple of years ago. It was a $100 instead of $80 for the 12 pack, but it's worth it.

Here's a suggestion from someone driving a Yamaha golf cart for ten years in TV, don't settle for those little round mirrors that they offer as standard Villager ready. You want as much visibility as possible when driving in TV.
https://scontent-atl3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/43195742_902091783317996_5643911382874193920_o.jpg ?_nc_cat=102&ccb=3&_nc_sid=730e14&_nc_ohc=BVOpMgN_wR8AX8f-hvn&_nc_ht=scontent-atl3-2.xx&oh=4740df05c49a01a934874b9e1b043bc4&oe=605378D6
In TV I believe it's standard practice to install the big mirrors, so if you're buying from Carts & Clubs pay the little extra and get these big mirrors. However, I'm really surprised they're installing them so high above the windshield fold line. Mine came that way from TV and within the first week I almost had a head on collision on an MMP at Odell and Buena Vista there is a sharp turn. The mirror created a built in blind spot in the turn and the cart coming from the opposite direction was totally hidden behind the mirror. I immediately drove over to LSL and without question, lowered the mirrors for me for free, and told them what had happened, and I noticed ever since then in 2011 they have installed the mirrors with the top edge no higher than the windshield fold.

As you can see on my cart, the mirrors top edge is in line with the windshield fold. This way you have a clear view all the way around in a turn as you scan for other traffic.

I'll make one last suggestion, when buying the upgraded seats, get the version with the center armrest. It's just like a car, you don't notice the armrest until you don't have one. The way I drive, when making turns my left hand is on the steering wheel and having an armrest gives the right arm a place to anchor yourself. It's great, I can't imagine driving without one.

As it was mentioned before and I had posted photos, Cart & Clubs of Ocala has a 3 piece windshield. It folds down and pops forward at the bottom. I thought that was a great idea, but really I wanted was the windshield to pop forward at the bottom. I like that better because you don't get too much wind in your face as you do with the top part folded down. In fact, once I leave the golf course I usually put the top back up.
I went to Villages at LSL next to Barnes & Nobles and they a windshield that is tinted and pops forward at the bottom, but is solid on top. When I sat in the cart, it was really nice not having that bar across the middle of the windshield. It was $200 and something I didn't consider. Mine Yamaha is a 2011 and is a Drive, the Yamahas since 2017 are Drive 2 and the supports posts are straight down at the bottom, where on mine they curve backwards at the bottom. The salesman said they that windshield for both versions of Yamaha and for EZGO. It was $200.
Here's The Villages version with a solid top, they have them for old and new Yamaha and for EZGO.
