Perseverance rover successfully lands on Mars, a key step in NASA’s search for signs of life

NASA’s newest robotic explorer has landed safely on Mars after a nearly 300-million-mile journey that began on a Florida launch pad.

The agency’s Perseverance rover touched down on the Red Planet at 3:55 p.m. EST Thursday, bringing an end to the “seven minutes of terror” that saw a fiery atmospheric entry and parachute-assisted descent. The rover’s landing mechanism then fired eight retrorockets to slow down and guide it to a proper landing spot before using nylon cords to lower it onto the surface.

"Touchdown confirmed! Perseverance is safely on the surface of Mars, ready to begin seeking the signs of past life," exclaimed NASA engineer Swati Mohan.

All told, the unique landing maneuver successfully decelerated Perseverance from thousands of miles an hour to just 1.7 mph at touchdown. And because of an 11-minute delay in transmissions from Earth to Mars, the rover did it all on its own – no human input was possible.

So the Lander is actually a Rover and also has a helicopter. Amazing!

the technology has come a long way from the early days....boggles the mind

i would like nasa to come clean about the terra forming issue .that is the gorilla in the room.in mars current state children born there could not return to earth . Their bones would be to brittle. Without sufficient oxygen and air pressure and enhanced gravity mars will remain a rock you can travel to in space but have to live permanently in small sealed habitats. Plans are in the work to establish hardy antarctica moss on mars surface to thrive and dispense oxygen and increase air pressure on mars and hopefully strengthen the gravity field. Space mining for new periodic table elements such as a super conductor will be a primary mission. A form of space gold race will eventually occur amongst nations and corporations seeking the next super discovery . In fact in about 50 to 100 years from now space mining will be earths preeminent industry joining the military industrial complex in these quests for world leadership.

So smart to have a drone, vs. Land Rover. Can’t wait for all the info to get here. There are two other countries UAE (a first) and China. I imagine they are all looking for minerals, not life.

I proudly do not think as most people do. Far as mars. It is getting crowded.
Saudi Arabia has recently launched and installed a satellite that is circling mars. China has a rover type vehicle driving about. We are now the third.

Reality, I recall reading about a time in ???? Maine where there were only two cars in the entire state. They had the first auto accident when those two cars hit each other. Rules? Is anyone going to clean up the junk they leave behind? Martians, if there are any, perhaps living below ground. Are they putting up gates to keep people out?

BTW - It takes ELEVEN MINUTES for a signal to be sent from Earth and received by the Mars Rover, and same back again. So, the eventual landing sequence was ALL programmed and conducted solely by the Rover software and guidance systems. It worked to perfection.

More About Ingenuity

The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter was built by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California which also manages the technology demonstration for NASA Headquarters in Washington. NASA’s Ames and Langley Research Centers provided significant flight performance analysis and technical assistance. AeroVironment Inc., Qualcomm, Snapdragon, and SolAero also provided design assistance and major vehicle components. The Mars Helicopter Delivery System was designed and manufactured by Lockheed Space Systems in Denver.

NASA’s Mars Helicopter Reports In
The technology demonstration has phoned home from where it is attached to the belly of NASA’s Perseverance rover.

Mission controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California have received the first status report from the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, which landed Feb. 18, 2021, at Jezero Crater attached to the belly of the agency’s Mars 2020 Perseverance rover. The downlink, which arrived at 3:30 p.m. PST (6:30 p.m. EST) via a connection through the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, indicates that both the helicopter, which will remain attached to the rover for 30 to 60 days, and its base station (an electrical box on the rover that stores and routes communications between the rotorcraft and Earth) are operating as expected.
After Perseverance deploys Ingenuity to the surface, the helicopter will then have a 30-Martian-day (31-Earth-day) experimental flight test window. If Ingenuity survives its first bone-chilling Martian nights – where temperatures dip as low as minus 130 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 90 degrees Celsius) – the team will proceed with the first flight of an aircraft on another world.

If Ingenuity succeeds in taking off and hovering during its first flight, over 90% of the project’s goals will have been achieved. If the rotorcraft lands successfully and remains operable, up to four more flights could be attempted, each one building on the success of the last.

Next-generation rotorcraft, the descendants of Ingenuity, could add an aerial dimension to future exploration of the Red Planet. These advanced robotic flying vehicles would offer a unique viewpoint not provided by current orbiters high overhead or by rovers and landers on the ground, providing high-definition images and reconnaissance for robots or humans, and enable access to terrain that is difficult for rovers to reach.
