Now that you live in The Villages, Florida, what is/are the things that you miss from your previous location (up-North).
In my case, I miss the relationships I established with service providers, even car dealers. I had great confidence in my providers. After years of trial and error, I knew who to trust and who not to trust.
I also miss personally knowing my physicians and attorney. When you grow up with them, it's easier to get to know them.

From Palm Harbor, FL I miss the food I could get at Surf & Turf. We still go back there to that market a few times a year. http://www.surfandturfmarket.com/
The sourdough bread from San Francisco as well as various gourmet take-out dishes from some grocery stores around Palo Alto is another thing that comes to mind.
As are the clam strips from a restaurant on Bodega Bay.
Some of the Mexican-American food from the Phoenix area restaurants as well as Basque food from a Reno, NV. Prime Rib from a certain casino near Sparks, NV.
I agree, the food up-north is better.
For me it's the pizza & artisan breads.
Have had anything close here in central FL.
Aside from that, I'm good.

We were in Indiana in June and August. Never thought I'd miss tiger lilies growing along the side of the road and hostas! (My nephew the park ranger reminded me that tiger lilies are considered an invasive weed.)
Also miss the Mexican food...down here it's "tex-mex", and Chicago pizzas...and lastly Lake Michigan and the singing sands.

We lived in a small farming community. (although we did not farm!). We were so close to many family owned farm markets. If you went in the morning to get fresh corn on the cob, the owner would say - "come back after 3:00, when the just picked corn would be available."
Fresh produce and fruit, homemade donuts and apple cider, a nursery where they grew and sold only two types of flowers - in the summer they sold only geraniums and at Christmas, just poinsettas. All a very short drive from our home.
Having a small town atmosphere, when you did your banking, the manager and tellers knew you. The druggist knew you, the grocery store manager knew you. and etc.
But change is good -- it's interesting and challenging at the same time.
The Fla. weather makes up for a lot of the things I miss about the North!

We were incredibly lucky to sell our lakefront home in New Hampshire in February! We then purchased an Amarillo in Lilberty Park. What we will miss is the call of the loons on a warm night, boating in our pontoon boat, and late night swims. What we won't miss is the snow!!
We purchased a 39 foot camping trailer which we have in a campground in Maine and have been here since late May. Two weeks from now, we will leave in a Penske Truck and make the journey to TV! We will miss family back in NH but we can't wait to make TV our home.

When I'm in Canada during the summer, I miss my Bubble friends enormously. And my golf cart. And Mah Jongg. And Doggie Doo Run Run. But I love our Lake cottage and the loons. And I don't miss the hot weather one bit! And I'm glad to catch up with Canadian friends and family. I love the autumn and the changing leaves. And I feel that tingle of anticipation that means I'll soon be packing for the trip back to our Villages home!
When I'm in The Villages during the winter months, I feel blessed. I think being away from the Villages for six months makes it even more special when we return. I'm amazed at the beauty and I love being away from the ice and snow. I feel as if I'm living on a different plant entirely, not Planet Earth. I don't miss anything at all. Life is just perfect when I'm in The Bubble.

I miss the several nice fancy restaurants that we had that served quality food. It seems that The Villages only has mid-level chain restaurants.
My wife and I miss our personal physicians, even though I picked a physician that was well recommended on TOTV.
I miss our 24/7 grocery store and pharmacy that we used to have right nearby. I also miss having movie theaters with late showings and restaurants that stay open later. In addition, I miss seeing Broadway shows and comedians that I used to watch at my local performing arts center.
I miss some of the food items and brands that we used to buy but we have found some other items here that we could not buy home.
We miss seeing our son, my son's girlfriend and their dog too.
My wife really misses the change of seasons.

Reading a good book while there's a January northeaster raging outside...watching the snow pile up...putting a couple more logs in the wood-burning stove as I listened to the wind howl.
In the summer, making a run to the local farm at 5 o'clock to buy corn that just came in from the 4 o'clock picking.
Making the Saturday morning run to the town dump and stopping at the library on my way home....the librarian would often have a book put away that she'd thought I like.
Spotting the first swamp maples turning red in early September....then, by Columbus Day the trees are ablaze with color.
Yep, I miss small-town New Hampshire.

I live in NJ and I will miss living less than an hour form NYC, Phil, Atlantic City, the ocean, the Delaware River. My wife will miss the 15+ malls within an hour and Macy`s.
I will not miss the traffic, the corruption, the high taxes, the $8000 property taxes. In NJ if you sell your house and move out of state, you have to pay an `exit` tax. Can not afford to retire in NJ.
I`m not moving to retire in Florida, I`m moving to retire in the Villages, a world of its own, and love it so much. It reminds me of how life was as a kid growing up.

We will be selling our NY home and moving down to our Florida home full time within a year or so. Life is a trade off, and all in all, I feel we are making an upgrade.
Still, there will be things I will miss, like;
1) The smell of fall and the crunch of colorful leaves under your feet.
2) Our church.
3) Fireflies and hummingbirds and Orioles
4) Having a choice of 20 good pizza places within 5 miles
5) Beef on Wecks, white hots, Chevettas
6) Wegmans !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
7) Grass that does not look like crabgrass
8) Snowblowing..(just a tiny bit)
9) Good ice cream places
10) Fish fries on Friday nights
11) Dunkin Donuts and Tim Hortons
What I won't miss;
1) Potholes
2) Snow, Ice, Black ice, Snowplows
3) Scraping your windshield, warming up your car for 20 minutes
4) Rusty cars from roadsalt, EVERYTHING rusty.
5) NYS taxes!
6) High heating bills
7) Closet full of winter clothes
8) Pushing shopping carts through slush, ice, etc.
9) Seeing the birds leave in fall because they're smarter then we are
10) Winterizing everything
But, I will get in trade;
1) Cool birds like Sand Hill Cranes
2) Cool roads with replectors on them, like Airport runways
3) BIG lighted streetsigns
3) A Walgreens on every corner (sarcasm)
4) No owning of ice scrapers, snowblowers , snowshovels
5) Palm Trees!!!!
6) little lizards everywhere
7) Cockroaches disguised as "PALmetto bugs"
8) Dressing like Hawaii 5-0 all year.
9) Cars lasting longer with NO RUST
10) My golf cart
11) Gators in my back yard pond.
12) low taxes, only one license plate
13) No stairs in my house, (sadly no basement)
14) No basement to keep clean
15) My own orange trees, (got 5 citrus trees....)
16) Mickey Mouse only a half hour away.
17) The Villages just right up the road from me.

I've heard the statistic that 40% of Villagers are seasonal residents. I'm not sure of the facts, but it does start to get quieter around April/May. Of course a lot of permanent residents also travel north in the summer to visit friends and family.
Except for the expense involved, I think being fifty/fifty is just about perfect. You still get to enjoy your old neighbourhood and friends and family and (hopefully) cooler summers. I love the late spring in Canada with the hint of summer around the corner. Now the leaves are starting to change colour .. always a beautiful time of year.
I love the cooler summers and living beside a lake for six months. And we've made incredibly good friends in TV who come to Canada to visit during the summer! Thank you Nonie and Bernie, we had a great visit. And then Beady arrived with her two puppies, and we enjoyed her visit immensely. And then The Captain flew in, and straightened us all out.
The best thing of all is that we Canadians get two Thanksgivings, and that is my favourite holiday. Like Christmas without worrying about gifts. We celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving in early October before we leave for TV. And then in November in TV, we have a wonderful friend who makes an incredible currant turkey dressing for US Thanksgiving.
How could anyone not love being retired? :a040:

I'll miss family and friends here. Some will visit, and vise versa, but not as often as I'll wish they were around.
I'll miss fall. I'll miss my wonderful ladies golf association.
I'll miss having a bigger house, lots of big closets, a beautiful 2 1/2-acre lot and a basement. Sort of. I won't miss the maintenance.
We will have to get rid of lots and lots of "stuff". It will be interesting to see if I miss "stuff". I rather think I won't. I'm anxious to downsize. Or, more accurately, I'm anxious to have downsized. The process itself, which are are just starting, won't be fun at all.
I guess I'll have to revisit all this when we become frogs.

MOUNTAINS!!!! That, to me, is the biggest negative to Florida. I really, really miss my friends back home even though I've made some great new ones here. I miss the cold, California rain; getting soaked and then taking a long, hot bath in my Roman tub was something I loved to do in the winter.
The farmers' markets. Had one on Tuesday, Thursday evening, Friday and Saturday. I really miss the fresh picked produce. I miss Gallo salami (can't find one I really like here) and, of course, sourdough bread (Fresh Market has some decent sourdough but I'm not too fond of the price tag for it).
I think I could miss so much more if I chose to, but the reality is that TV is truly hard to beat -- wonderful food, decent food, reasonable prices for most of everything and, the best of all, the wonderful people that live here.

We used to not feel that way, but over about the last five years the neighborhood has changed, and not for the better. The change was due to when they where basically "giving" houses away to anyone who could sign their name, knowing full well the ycould not pay for them or even afford to live in a house. Need I say more???

It always surprises me to see somebody say "I don't miss anything".
We left behind easy access to our family, 25 years worth of friends, a house we raised our daughter in, a house where our daughter had her wedding, a house that I pours thousands of hours of labor/love in, a job that I really loved, and wonderful memories of summers and yes, winters." (er...maybe winters)
There is no chapter of my life that I don't miss. Maybe except the year in a cast when I broke my leg, but then, the orthopedist and his wife became good friends and we even vacationed together.

I have had the privilege to live in many places. And there is something about every one of them that I miss. I travel back to some of them just to see/get those things. Some more then others, but everywhere has their good things and their bad things. I will list only one or two about each, but there are actually many from each one. Each one has a favorite restaurant or two, a special place called home and each has lots of memories.
NH - Lobster, tax free shopping, skiing, the mountains
MA - Sea food, the Patriots, Redsox & Celtics
NY - (Buffalo) wings & Texas red hots
NJ - Access to NY city theater
RI - The Ocean
CA - The wine, the food, the skiing the Ocean
VA - Still here, but will miss the access to DC, the golf, the riding
And everywhere I have been, the wonderful Friends you never seem to see again.

Well, we really didn't miss anything . . until we started reading these posts and was reminded of a few things.
From Alabama, we miss Buffalo Rock Ginger Ale. We certainly won't miss our big lake home (too much for two people) but will miss our view of Neely Henry Lake.
From Virginia, I miss the smell of the wetlands and watching the working watermen. We miss Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown. We miss our youth.
The Villages has so many wonderful things to experience, and there are new memories around the bend. We are happy and feel blessed to live here fulltime.

Since hubby and I won’t be moving to TV for a few more years, we still have time to enjoy all the wonderful things that will be sorely missed: first and foremost our home because it overflows with special memories created between the two of us, our family and friends; my lovely gardens which through the seasons kindly offered a serene retreat from both life’s major and minor stresses.
Beyond our home, I’ll miss Sundays in Spring with invigorating bike rides along the Colonial Parkway (between Williamsburg and Jamestown) then stopping for a picnic and photos; long lazy summer days on the Outer Banks spent lost in a good mystery, shopping in quaint boutiques or simply snoozing in a softly swaying hammock; dining and dancing by moonlight on the Chesapeake Bay; the VA Tech/UVA football games (especially the tailgate parties!); our traditional “Falling in love with Fall” weekend getaway on the Skyline Drive (after the leaves have donned their dresses of red and gold); the Grand Illumination in Williamsburg followed with a hearty winter meal at one of the historical taverns; the outstanding museums and cultural events in DC;....etc....etc....etc.......
Virginia is a beautiful state in which to reside. We enjoy a wonderful climate whereby we get to experience all four seasons without anyone overstaying their visit!

A few years ago they expanded....they now make their own ice cream, etc....it is quite good. Actually, my next door neighbor manages the place! Small world.

I miss my family and friends who are there, which is why I go back to Louisville every month for a few days; and I miss having a big modern mall nearby; not just for shopping, but for a place to go walking indoors when it is raining or cold here; Skyline Chili; going to Churchill Downs; U of Louisville basketball games; having an airport nearby; and events at the Kentucky Center for the Arts. But, I still prefer living here.

I missed moose and caribou hunting this year. I miss fresh fresh halibut, cod, salmon and crab. What I don't mis is the loooong cold winters and that is why we are very happy to be here in TV.

Yum, I won't have to worry about Christmas gifts for relatives in other states. Also, Johnson Estate wine.

Costco just a mile away.
In-N-Out
REAL Mexican food:sigh:
Kaiser-Permanente Health Care
Yes, yes, yes and yes! There was an In-N-Out I passed every day on my way home from work - and if the car window was down my car would drive itself into the drive-thru. I swear I didn't do it!

And what about the In-N-Out secret menu. Some of those items are to die for. Problem none here in Ohio but I recently read that they may be expanding out of the Southwest.

My wife and I are from Pompano Beach, Fl. and we lived on a canal. I think what I would miss the most is the salt water fishing and shrimpin. Nothing like something fresh you just caught yourself. Love it here much better.... and the friendly people. We made the right move. Now all my family lives here{mother, father, and sister} and my wifes mother lives next door.:beer3:

At this point, we're not sure that we'll ever wind up in TV full-time. That's our current thinking, anyways. Just looking forward to being able to escape OH winters for now!!! :)
Reasons for feeling like we just can't leave OH permanently:
- Built a new home here a couple of years ago.....and just love it! We took a pretty fair beating when we sold our previous place and wouldn't look forward to potentially having to go through THAT again!
- Corollary to the above point: Having to move all over again! And a full-time move would require a downsizing of epic proportions - no more humongo storage building, getting rid of a number of vehicles, no more basement, disposing of some nice fairly new furniture, etc.
- Friends we've made here over all the years we've lived here.
- We actually like "the three good seasons" here (for the most part).
- Everything we've grown accustomed to - we're both rather "routine"-oriented people.
What we wouldn't miss (at least being away for the winter time):
- The snow, ice, salt, cold, driving/navigating in the stuff, snowblowing/shoveling, what the salt does to the vehicles, et al. We both dislike winters with a passion!
But maybe once we're able to completely break free from current work situations and spend a winter or two in TV, we'll change our minds about making it there full-time. Ya just never know...............time will tell!

Bill and Brillo..
Although our house in West Chester, Ohio isn't as new, we did build it to our specs and the basement is so difficult to leave. Space for everyone's projects and my ebay dance leotard business. We also have decent furniture, really overscale for homes in TV. But...we really want to live in The Villages full time after spending two winters there and ....we will really have to take a huge loss to do that. Sweetie can continue to work with monthly trips back to Cincinnati, but he really is ready for retirement, I think.
The family and friends are the hardest to leave.
Granville is a beautiful town, the quintessential lovely Ohio town. I can understand your misgivings.
Hope to meet you very soon.
kindest wishes,
Gracie

Most of all of course I miss being half an hour from my granddaughters. I don't miss Manhattan as much as I miss Brooklyn where they live. But every time I open up The New Yorker and see all the grand goings-on, I do miss Manhattan.
Aside from that, I miss knowing exactly where to go to find things I need to buy or to get things fixed. I find I use the Internet more and more for shopping, because it's easier and more precise than shopping in Ocala or Orlando.
I miss all the charming little towns and harbors along the Connecticut coast.

And West Chester's quite the nice place as well! Thanks for your feedback.

Things I thought I would miss (and don't!):
- my basement (it was hard to get rid of all the stuff, but life is so much simpler without it all!!!)
- my friends (not that I didn't love my friends up north, but I made friends down here sooo quickly that I didn't have time to miss them.)
- the changing seasons (let's face it, sunshine all the time beats almost everything!!!)
- my work (yes, you can laugh....I really thought I might be bored without a job! hahahahahahaha NOT)
- my family (yes, I do miss them.....but they have ALL come to visit already!)
Things I miss from up north:
- cheaper cable (And by Comcast no less!)
- less expensive water (couldn't believe the water bills here...wow)
- Vernor's (no explanation needed if you're from Michigan)
- People that know how to drive ( sorry, but it's true!)
