View Full Version : Are we getting too Lax about virus??

Noticed we had 72 new cases in TV yesterday 2/24/21. Perhaps too many thing are being opened back up like it is all over. Very few people at squares are wearing masks, and social distancing is a thing of the past.
I will not be sucked back, even though I have both vaccinations. I will wear a mask and social distance when I can. I will not eat indoor at restaurants, and I will not go to events that do not require CDC compliances.

It's nice that you state your opinion. Mine is that you do what you like and I'll do what I like. I wear a mask where it's required and since the government doesn't own the air you breath(yet)I won't be wearing one out of doors and I avoid crowds except grocery shopping(and they require a mask-which I wear).
Oh yeah..."getting too lax?"....no.

Getting too lax, no, we have been too lax since the beginning. I am hopeful that as more people get vaccinated we will become safer and that things return to "normal"
I personally know several people who have died from the virus, and many others who became quite ill, so it is concerning to me.

Many of us now have been vaccinated and (right or wrong) have changed our behavior...go more places...wear mask where required (usually not when we are outdoors unless in close quarters).
So there are more people starting to expand their boundaries.

too lax since beginning with over half a million dead (some you know?) many lives could have been saved and can be saved now

What has changed in the last 60 days? The squares were open then with entertainment and tree lighting. Restaurants were open then including indoor dining. The pools were open then though maybe it was a little too cool for swimming. Some snowbirds were here then and even more are here now. And on December 26 there were 70 new cases reported in the Villages for a total of 2,083. What are the "too many things" that have reopened and caused a one-day case count to be the same as it was 60 days ago?

Today only 22 new cases. PANIC, PANIC, PANIC. Isolate , wear masks in your home, social distance even from your pets, don't watch the news and only drink distilled water. Wear at least 19 masks if you must venture outside while in your car and at least 30 if you are forced to exit the vehicle.

Do we have to wait until Covid is fully eradicated until we get back to Costco, Trader Joe's and dog poop threads ?? Every day it's the same thing over and over. Never thought I'd miss those topics so much. I guess it's good for TOTV advertising stats. Hey mods, how about a "Covid 24/7" forum section ?

We are sick of it. I have been eating inside restaurants I do not wear a mask walking around outside. Worse thing to do. I do not wear a mask riding in my golf cart. I do not wear a mask riding in my car. I have lived in The Villages since last March when everything close down. I have gone to stores, restaurants, bars, the squares and have not gotten sick. I am 58, my boyfriend is 69. Guess we are lucky.

While you’re at it, please wear a mask while sleeping, showering, bike riding, in your golf cart and any time you are breathing.....that should cover it.....literally. Don’t ya think if masks worked the virus would be over by now???? I stopped wearing a mask months ago, after I realized I was being fed a bunch of BS. I’m going to live “freely”...for now.

Masks haven't been as effective as they should be simply because there are too many people who are resistant to wear them properly or wear them at all. We never had a chance here in America to get to the point that this virus would be over. Sad really.

Well????? IMO there no actual proof the napkin mask actually prevent anything. They may reduce odds in certain situations which IMO better than nothing. Now n95 or better mask if worn properly probably does better job. Other countries have more control and restrictions than USA, some are isolated with lot less population so there effectiveness is higher. China actually locked people in there apartments for Months. Or possibly, or even probably, the masks that most people are wearing are not effective against the virus and they have an unfounded sense of safety.
Mass media alone without additional research and confirmation are dangerous to society.

Have you not seen any videos which demonstrate the usefullness of Universal masking? Been there. Done that. Not going to post any more. It is up to you to do the research now. Yes, that was my post. How did you find that? I don't even remember which thread I posted that in. It isn't this one because I just checked.
Getting back to the business at hand.........What I believe I said was we would not be in this mess of a pandemic if EVERYONE wore masks and ALWAYS distanced from others. I do not believe I said "we could have ended the virus in America". Those are your words, not mine.
I'm not that naive to think this virus would or could have been eradicated by universal masking and distancing. Having said that, I truly believe we in America would be in a much better place at this time having a much better outcome than we have so far with this pandemic if everyone had followed the CDC guidelines from the get go. That is water under the bridge now and the collective attitude of many Americans will not allow us to pull ourselves out of this dreadful mess me are in. All my opinion, of course.
In addition, IMHO, it is embarrassing for us on the world stage, as Americans, to have fared so poorly with managing this pandemic. I'm very thankful for the vaccines which will allow us to see some semblance of normalcy in the future. We could not have done it without those life saving vaccines.

It's not the numbers. At a population of 332 Million we are going to have more actual cases. But, using mortality, as in deaths per million, we are at number 10.

The vaccine does not equal immunity. It only increases the odds that if and when you contract C-19 you won't die from it. We're going to be wearing face diapers for years. If not C-19, it'll be something else.

Sounds like you should just stay home. The rest of us are getting back to normal life. So there were 72 new cases. It’s a virus! Sooner or later we’re all going to come in contact with it just like we did the flu virus or the cold virus. I personally am glad to see that people are losing the masks and starting to act like normal human beings again.

It amazes me that after so many months of getting information from scientists and health experts we still have to have this discussion about masks. All the experts tell us we need to wear masks until everyone is vaccinated so we can slow the spread and keep the virus mutations to a minimum. Its not rocket science, yet some people either just don't "get it" or are in denial. Hopefully they a tiny minority, for the good of the country.

Why does this idiotic rumor keep spreading????? Again, I challenge ANYONE to cite a reputable source for this nonsense.
Think of it this way-----why would all the "experts" be pushing the vaccines as the method of obtaining herd immunity and ending this pandemic if the vaccines did not confer immunity. Why spend billions on vaccines that only prevent "death" in the 0.3% of the people who would actually die from it. In fact, in a cold-hearted but social Darwinian model, why keep people who can spread the virus alive?
Yet , on just about every COVID thread, some yahoo pops up with the "the vaccine only decreases severity of illness and reduces the chance of death" Use your brains, please.

Absolutely agree. We certainly don't deserve a trophy for the dismal standing we have in this global pandemic. IMHO, at the beginning of this pandemic it boils down to the lack of leadership and the total lack of good examples being set for the American people. I'm mad as hell about that!

This is my take......viruses need hosts to perpetuate their 'dirty deeds' and circulate in the population. Without hosts to give viruses the ability to replicate, then the mutations will not be able to occur. That is how my mind understands the process. Masking and distancing from others, in simple terms, minimizes the spread of the virus. So....in turn, the virus mutations are also minimized. No???? Please explain where I'm going wrong with my thinking if that is actually the case. I value your expertise.
I'm aware you are not a fan of masking and I'll never understand that because you are a physician so I've always been baffled by your stance on masking. I am grateful, though, that you feel distancing is excellent for virus mitigation.

Agree. I do exactly the same thing. If theres crowds outside, well, avoid that area. Simple. Its not crowded everywhere. Ive yet to go into a store that doesnt require a mask,so, no one is being lax there. I think many you have seen without masks have probably gotten the vaccine and feel they are safe. Obviously that would start happening. Not surprised. Bottom line. Only go where you feel safe and dont worry about what other people are doing.
If you knew your neighbors dog would bite you every time you went over there, would you continue to go? No. Only a nitwit would do that but then again there are many nitwits around.
So? You see a crowded area of maskless people, would you continue to go there? No.

Interesting. I guess I haven't expressed myself clearly in previous posts. I am not against masking, just can't see any value in "useless" making. Indoors, in a crowd, and when unable to socially distance a mask is valuable to reduce COVID spread. Alone in your house or car, outdoors more than 6 feet away from others---pretty useless. I was at Disney last week, at the edge of the parking lot of Magic Kingdom, and got a phone call. The person on the other end couldn't hear me well through my mask, so I lowered it. I was more than 100 yards from the next person, yet a security person came flying out of nowhere in a cart and yelled for me to put my mask back on. Totally IDIOTIC. Not that it was his fault, just doing what he was told, But the policy maker must be a MORON.
As for as mutations, you are right in general----the less virus circulating the less the odds of a mutation, although viruses tend to mutate in the wild anyway. If there was NO virus then there would be NO mutations. Also realize, even in viruses, just like people, most random mutations are fatal (to the virus). Apparently there are now over 4,000 mutations, but only 3 of them (UK, S. Africa, and Brazil) have had any medical significance (so far)

Now there's a new one! Wrong, but new.
Viruses are small, the droplets that carry them somewhat larger, but neither is anywhere near as small as the MOLECULES that you smell from fish

Wow, what does one say about this post. I'll just say masks work and opposition to wearing them is, at the very least, foolish. Proof - the incredibly low numbers of regular flu cases in many countries this winter. I hope that every year from November-April mask-wearing will become the norm.

Maybe it's the masking. Maybe it's the social distancing. Maybe it's the lack of crowds. Maybe it's the limited capacity at restaurants. Maybe it's just a low flu year. But more likely, anything is a flu-like illness is being empirically coded as COVID, if not specifically tested for.
Bottom line, nobody knows yet (except you).

I too, am frustrated by the numbers. We have over 45% of our seniors vaccinated with at least one jab and it seems to make no difference on the number of cases. Looking at daily stats for Sumter Co pretty much only folks over the age of 65 seem to be testing positive for COVID.
The good news is more folks are getting vaccinated every day. Today the Publix appointments in Sumter co lasted an hour. If demand for the shots starts waning among the Seniors I’m hoping they open it up for those 55 and older.
When I get my two shots I too will be dancing in the squares and dining at the restaurants again. Until then, I’m double masking and limiting my shopping to necessary outings.

There will be a 4-8 week lag time before the effect of vaccination can be seen in the daily stats. Vaccinations started in earnest what, about 3 weeks ago? So stayed tuned and we'll see.

That is your anxiety, not mine. Highly doubt that number. News reports tri county area. Many are from Coleman Prison.
How easy is to break out the Coleman numbers so we can more accurately know a more realistic "resident result".
Not sure why basic statistical analysis is not used when reporting covid status......need to retain fear factor ().

The vaccine does not equal immunity. It only increases the odds that if and when you contract C-19 you won't die from it. We're going to be wearing face diapers for years. If not C-19, it'll be something else.
Not me.

There are so many doom-sayer posts daily on people out and about maskless. For months now, Every time someone drives around and sees people maskless at a Square, or any activity/ event scheduled - the next day there are posts predicting thousands of new cases and deaths - hospitals overwhelmed etc etc. If this were true, everyone here would be dead by now.
Sometimes it is hard to tell whether those posts are still harping on the subject just to continue spreading doom and gloom, or disappointed it hasnt happened?

It amazes me that after so many months of getting information from scientists and health experts we still have to have this discussion about masks. All the experts tell us we need to wear masks until everyone is vaccinated so we can slow the spread and keep the virus mutations to a minimum. Its not rocket science, yet some people either just don't "get it" or are in denial. Hopefully they a tiny minority, for the good of the country.
They are not "experts". They are authoritarians who suppress any and all (especially other doctors) who share information contradictory to their agenda. COVID is easy to cure ... but not if the establishment prevents access to the necessary drugs. HCQ is a very effective treatment for COVID. But, this drug ... cheap and widely available until last year ... is suddenly suppressed. If it has no effect and is cheap and harmless (millions take it to this day in other counties), why it is being suppressed.
You know the answer.

Cases, cases, cases! Hospitalization are way down. Treatments are working. Everyone should do what they feel is necessary for their own safety . If your uncomfortable in any situation , just leave. If you can smell fish through mask, it’s nor working
Best thing I have read in this whole thread. IMO.. If your uncomfortable with being out in public stay home and be safe but don't think it is the responsibility of everyone else to create a situation where you can feel warm and fuzzy, you control your own safety.

No, just getting too tired from the ever-changing BS information the "experts" are feeding us daily.
yes! & i will repeat this again: it's been a YEAR people! how long do we let this charade go on? that is one seriously crafty virus to be able to live so long. i smell bs in there somewhere, & am sick of the double standard of 'educated' folk being able to eat, fly, visit anytime they want, (usually maskless) while the common folk must abide by any silly rule they can think of. :boxing2:

People are people. It's been about a year. From experience. So many people decide they need to lose weight. Whatever diet they go on they lose weight. How many stay on a diet for a year? Simple reason why most people take off the weight and put it back on.
Even the numbers. We see all the graphs etc. Reality we are not comparing the same things. We have yet to do a valid random study. In the beginning you needed to be showing symptoms to get a test done. Proper data would be a random study of thousands.
Due to gained knowledge, survival after a positive diagnosis has vastly improved.
Even that data is distorted. If a patient has covid but dies form a heart attack, it will be recorded as a death due to covid.
We want, we demand, we expect, perfection-unfortunately that is not reality.

how can someone be an expert on a situation thats only been around a short time? imo they will be studying this virus for years to come & still not know much. and when the death numbers are in question, it makes it worse for the state to prove. so many passed from other things, yet corona was on the death certificate. @ best, it's dishonest, to say the least

It is nice to see all the people who are writing messages here are starting to see the light. I have not changed a thing in my life this past year. I think if you are in good health and you get the virus you will be sick for a few days and then you will recover to lead a good life. I have friends who got the virus and now they are in good health. I had one friend who passed when she got the virus but she had some real bad problems with her health. So sad. I really think the government wants to scare the daylights out of us. Thank God we live in Florida who has a great Governor and did one heck of a job during the past year. Some day I will get the vaccine when I can take my wife and not have to wait a few hours in line. Until then I go out to eat indoors or outdoors 3 or 4 times a week, play golf every day and just not worry about anything. You all should do the same.

The government could not have designed a better thought control experiment if they tried (or did they?)
Now, the government, media, and terrorism organizations see just how easy it is to get the masses to think and act as one. Read my Invasions of the Body Snatchers article.

No.
Simple
What you say makes a lot of sense. I LOVE that word.....nitwit.

Thanks for addressing my concerns. You know, I totally agree with you on the masking when it is necessary and useful. You will never see me outside not near anyone with a mask on. Just not going to happen (except at Disney World, I guess). My bad for thinking you were against masking all together. Your stance makes sense to me now, knowing you are a physician. Sorry that I misunderstood.

Wow, what does one say about this post. I'll just say masks work and opposition to wearing them is, at the very least, foolish. Proof - the incredibly low numbers of regular flu cases in many countries this winter. I hope that every year from November-April mask-wearing will become the norm.
I agree with everything you said here UNTIL that last line. Wash your mouth out with soap for that one!!!! LOL.

Who told you that you can contract the virus after being inoculated? I have read several studies that not only do you have immunity (to existing and targeted virus) but that you will most likely not be able to transmit the infection to anyone else.
There is also a nasal spray being studied right now that has a 99.99% effective rate at destroying ANY virus that enters the nose.
Suit yourself, but I have no intention of wearing a mask other than in places that post a sign requiring a mask in order to shop there. Do not tell folks that they are receiving a shot to prevent them from catching the virus and then tell them that they can still catch it but they won't get very sick. Most of us in good health already have that ability.
Sorry, but like I said before, if you are too scared to venture forth into public without a hazmat suit, then stay home. The rest of us are not here to protect you. And I am not focusing this on any particular poster, but to anyone that wishes to live in fear of shadows.

Followed the CDC guidelines from the get go? You mean the flip flopping guidelines ie; Covid is not going to be an issue; people should not wear masks...from Fauci who is paid more than the President. Ok 😐

Absolutely agree. We certainly don't deserve a trophy for the dismal standing we have in this global pandemic. IMHO, at the beginning of this pandemic it boils down to the lack of leadership and the total lack of good examples being set for the American people. I'm mad as hell about that!
Yep, INSANE to encourage the American people to disregard health warnings and instead, invite them to CHINATOWN!
If there would have been cooperation in the beginning rather than fighting the administration's efforts every step of the way we'd be much better off!

History. The black plague in Europe, before people even knew about germs let alone viruses, killed half the people in Europe. We could spin that and say half the people survived.
So far the US has lost half a million people. We could spin that and say 345 million have survived.
I do not claim to have answers. I am thankful that it is way above my responsibility. For all of us, it is far easier to criticize what others have done or are doing than to find solutions to a problem.
And then there's vaccines - created for SARS and MERS, 10 years ago. Tested and then never used because?? SARS and MERS just went away..
10 years later, SARSv2 shows up = Covid. Tweak the vaccine to Covid and use it..

I also have completed my series of COVID vaccinations and I am not throwing caution out the window.
You should not get excited about the number of new cases reported in one day. Shown is a graph for Sumter County. You will notice that there have been many one-day spikes since the pandemic started. What I suspect happens that some of the groups performing the tests forget to report their results on a daily basis and then report a large number a day or two later; this produces a false spike in the number of daily cases. The next day after the spike, the number of daily cases reported drops to near the 7-day average.
