Twin Palms Orthopedic in Ocala.
Dr. Farr is excellent.

I have torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders.
Several years ago I made an informed decision to delay the surgery for as long as the conditions do not interfere with my life style. In my mid 80's and have no more pain from the rotator cuffs than I do from the other creaking and cracking aging joints in my body.

Stay as active as possible....exercise/exercise/exercise!!!!!!

To each his own.

Good luck!!

The Orthopedic Institute on 441 gets my vote.

Agree! I had the problem about 20 years ago. DR had 3 options in his recommendation in order 1-exercise 2-cortisone shot(s) 3-surgery. It didn't affect my golf swing so I opted for the exercises. No worse today than it was then unless I try to do things an 81 year old doesn't need to be doing.

I'm confused by your statement a bit. Did you have surgery, or did you use exercise/physical therapy and not have the surgery?

I'm interested because I'm starting PT for rotator cuff injury tomorrow. Dr. Cook, an orthopedic surgeon up at Sharon Morse center, thinks I will need the surgery eventually. My friends' daughter, who has been a sports PT at University of Michigan for 20 years, has read my MRI and thinks I can avoid it. She found me a PT through her network.

I'm torn, so to speak, about what to do but will try the PT first. You're the first person I've heard of who has avoided the surgery, if you did.

I did not have the surgery. I have had a cortisone injection or two over the years. Most of the time I am not even aware I have torn rotator cuffs (both shoulders have complete tears).
If I physically never get any worse than I am currently I will not be having the surgery.

My golf swing is unaffected.....and reasonable (I think for mid 80 age).

As I said previously, I will have an occasional ache or pain but no worse than than any other age related joint pain.

This has worked for me and I do not propose it works for all.

Thanks for input. I have heard Dr Cook was a good one. I have a few bone spurs in there as well and when they go in to clean those up they would possibly fix my torn rotator cuff.....but its 6 weeks just for the fixing of the spurs but 4 months for the cuff repair. I am torn on what to do.

I like Dr. Cook, but he will advocate for surgery. However, when I told him I wanted to try physical therapy first, he readily wrote me a script for it. But he said "You will be back!" He also said not to wait too long lest I need a graft or a frozen shoulder surgery.

My PT friend at University of Michigan sports clinic said "They all say that!" So I am trying PT and lots of exercises in between and hope I attain Billethkid's results.

Good luck to you whatever you choose.

I know it is a little further away but mine was fully torn and done at Shands in Gainsville by Dr Thomas Wright. I had an AMBIT pump that injected ropivacaine into the area every 33 seconds for 3 days. This resulted in no pain for the duration. After the 3 days, my wife removed the tube and that too was painless. When asked about PT, they gave me what was needed to do it at home and again without pain. Couldn't be happier!

My right shoulder is completely ruptured and has been for years. My Hip/Knee Otho advised me not to have surgery... said it cannot be fixed and not to let anyone tell me it can. He said my Deltoid muscle has compensated and to keep exercising. He didn’t even order PT... just advised to continue exercising but back off of anything causing too much pain. I occasionally have a little pain, but most of the time, I am unaware of the problem.

Maybe true but most times they don't take many insurance
They will say they do but you will have to pay extra
Always

Are you saying they are out of network for an Advantage plan? Or are you saying that even with a Medigap plan you will have to pay extra?

JwizChick, did you have to pay anything out of pocket?

If you go to one of The Villages Health facilities, see Stephanie Silberberg. My husband just had rotator cuff surgery and she is very good. She’s in the new Brownwood Specialty Care Center on 44.

It was recommended I have the reverse shoulder replacement. Could you comment on post op length of time to get back to “normal”, pain, range of motion, etc. Thanks.

Dr Cook did my surgery on January 13th. He did a fantastic job and I would highly recommended him. The surgery was done at TLC on 441 but the PT is at the Sharon Morris building. I too had a bone spur and some arthritis. He was able to shave the bone spur, clean up the arthritis and repair the rotator cuff tear. I’m currently in PT at the same office and again I would highly recommend them. The pain I had laying on the shoulder is gone and now I’m just working on getting my strength back. Good luck!

If you have a major tear in one or more of your rotator cuffs (there are 4), no amount of PT is going to help that. I had two rotators torn in my left shoulder and could not even reach my seat belt. Surgery went well, followed by 3 weeks of PT which is critical. I have had surgery on both shoulders for torn rotator cuffs and have experienced full recovery in both.

I had rotator cuff surgery Nov 2015. Dr. Isaacs Mitchell performed the surgery. He did it via laparoscopic and left only a 1/2" scar. Had to go to therapy and wear an ice sling couple times a day. He was fantastic and you would never know I had a problem. Wonderful personality and he was recommended by my regular Ortho doctor because he said "Dr. Mitchell does laparoscopic surgery and you will have less down time & a quicker recovery'. Highly recommend Dr. Isaacs Mitchell 352-259-5658. Good luck

I am 64 , had a complete tear and a bone spur . I elected surgery because I’m active , play golf , workout with resistance machines . Pretty common
arthroscopic surgery these days . It’s an ordeal . 3 to 4 week in a sling , sleep in a recliner the first few weeks . Started PT 2 days after the surgery. Just progressed to phase 2 , moving shoulder and arm that has become stiff . A lot of soreness a month and a half post surgery. Progressing though .
getting range of motion back and strength . Doing cardio on an elliptical machine at home . Doctor told me I can take full golf swings 3 months post surgery. He said in the consultation what will it be like in 5 years if you don’t have the surgery. Arthritis, frozen shoulder, cortisone shots , sleeping on the injured shoulder caused me pain .
God bless those that elected to not have the surgery. There are 4 rotator cuffs .
Find a surgeon that just does shoulders
and you should be fine .

Mark Frankle. Two replacements from him, traditional and reverse. Very happy. He "refused" to do surgery on a friend who wanted a fix. He told them they did not need surgery. He order PT and that worked for them. Check him: Mark A. Frankle, M.D. | Florida Orthopaedic Institute (https://www.floridaortho.com/physicians/mark-a-frankle-m-d/)

I also saw Dr Cook and he told me the exact same thing! He also said that with surgery that I may not have full range of motion. I am very interested in finding a good PT to see how that goes.

I went to Orthopedic Institute and my first choice was PT right there and they were excellent! Went 3 times a week for 2.5 months and did my homework twice a day (40 minute each time) faithfully. I hoped for the best outcome and have had no pain since. Had 1 cortisone shot at Lake Sumter urgent care to begin with and MRI showed large tear in large muscle. I golf an average of 4 time a week and no problem! Good Luck!

Both Dr Cook and Mitchell are excellent shoulder docs.

Do be careful with cortisone...I was having shoulder issues, got a cortisone injection, and ruptured my bicep tendon 3 weeks later. Good news...my shoulder doesn't hurt (as bad) any more!!! As Cook said, I fixed myself....did my own tenotomy without surgery. The bicep supposedly was irritating the shoulder.
