I would like a transponder that would would open the gate automatically rather than have to use the card or push the button each time. (Especially during the rain). Does such a thing exist and how do you get one.
Thank you for any assistance or ideas you may offer.

A friend of ours put one of his gate cards into his drivers side mirror (between the mirror glass and the outside of the mirror housing). He then taped it so it wouldn't come out. When he pulled into a gate, his driver side mirror was just about the same height and the gate box and the unit would read his card through the mirror housing. He said it worked for almost every gate entrance except for one or two where the gate box was a little too low for it to read from his mirror. On those few, he had his extra gate card handy or he used the button. But every time I was with him, it worked great and he didn't have to roll down his window.

Just go through the "visitor" line at a manned gate; usually shorter line anyway and since no one really needs a card since it is not a private community, just take the easy lane..... LOL ! Also, not all, but MANY people working the gates DO open them during rain (VERY nice of them, but not all do this curtsey !)
Transponders would be GREAT, but again, probably just another expense to the residents like the $50 cards to get in a line of 12-17 cars to enter their own public streets..... LOL ! Perhaps if "guards" (greeters) were discontinued, that would save enough to give all residents a transponder cost free, but of course that would also put many of our friends and neighbors out of jobs they depend on to supplement their retirement income, so.... there is always a downside !

Was going to say the same thing, most open without needing to put the window down. If you had a remote it would not slow cars enough to allow golf carts to cross the street.

Surprised you didn't get 12 people saying "if you don't like it, move!" although I probably "spoke" too soon as I'm sure that comment is coming! :D I'd like the window or grille mounted transponder too but that would mean bringing the gate technology AT LEAST up to 1980. ;)

yeah, no helpful or on topic answers so far...the answer to you question is NO....there is no transponder to date that will allow people worried about getting a bit damp to open the gate for you...not a bad suggestion, but not a game killer.

If you drive a Corvette or similar, car is too low. If you drive a truck, van or SUV (maybe other cars also) it works if you get close enough. When you put your window down and stick your hand out with the card, that's about the distance you need to be from the reader for it to read through the window. Works for us all the time. Depending on the line, and the weather, the visitors lane is an option.

It would be nice if they used the bar code system instead of the card.
No more lost cards or dropped cards.
Butttt then that would be a loss in revenue for TV.

No one has mentioned it yet, but when we first moved here almost 2 years ago, I read on one of the forums or a Facebook posting (possibly) there was a person that would implant (?) your code into your car (door, I believe), so that you wouldn’t have to mess with your card anymore. I’ve wanted to check in to it, but husband thinks we may be replacing our car soon, so I’ve delayed researching it. Anyone else heard of this?

The gates can be set to open automatically a few seconds after you stop at an entrance as they do when you exit.
They do this while Villages are still under construction.

Call Ed Ingalls of Tri Line handyman services, 217-433-1394. For $35 he takes your key card into his van, reads the information from it and transfers that onto a chip that he then installs behind your drivers side mirror. Pull your car close to the card reader and come to a stop and voila the gate opens. I’ve been using for about a year and gate opens 99% of time. For the rare instance when it doesn’t I keep my spare key card in the door pocket. Well worth it.

At some of the gates, I have to wave the card within inches and at others it can be feet away. I think age/sensitivity makes the difference of whether it will work through the window.

This isn't to your question with regards to a transponder. I've never heard of one that works at all in the many years that I've lived here. For the last six weeks however to a different point I have noticed that the reflection quality that is posted on these bars is as minimal as one could get possibly even zero. I asked a gate employee about that recently and he said well " itreally won't make much difference anyway because most of the gates are ripped out and smashed during the day" with that in mind I started paying more attention to some of the gates during the day and they're still hard to see because of background behind them in the distance or whatever and also keep in mind that when we're driving during the day our headlights are still on so it's still going to reflect just a thought. Buy the good stuff that works.

The ID on your smartphone is being developed and should be available shortly. I personally don't want to sit at a gate while drivers look for that app to open the gates.....could sit there for awhile.

Why the hurry? Most of us are retired, so we are not in that much of a hurry. In the last two weeks, I have witnessed several folks rushing through behind someone else when the gate is still up or on it's way down. Just a mess waiting to happen because folks are in such a hurry.

Some other 'gated' communities I know of use a bar code sticker attached to the passenger side rear window. It's scanned on entry, opens the gate, and records data as to who and when. Voila!

Doesn't record data, just checks a database for a known address.

Actually the one at my father's place did (well, I assume still does) exactly that and more. It kept a log with name, time and date (obviously it didn't see who was in the car) of entry and exit and a photo taken that could be matched. The sticker was non-removable. I always joked with my (at the time 90+ yr old) father he better be careful if he slipped out at 12AM for nefarious reasons. The log was available to the registered owner of the vehicle and the police with a warrant. Oh, they had the window sticker (without the computer database) back in the late 1980's and the new system around 2016 IIRC. Here in 2021 we're still waving our arms out the windows. :D While not a big deal by any means I think TPTB could afford some "luxury convenience" upgrades for the homeowners here.

I waited a couple months for my appointment and the big day finally arrived today. Mr Ingalls showed up right on time and took care of it in under 2 minutes. Now I am going to run around going through all the gates I can find. :) Ain't pure wanton & overly lavish luxury sweet! I figured all the money I saved over my lifetime by NOT smoking and only buying a 2/2 home instead of the $1.6million one I really wanted I could invest $38 in such luxury. :1rotfl:.

People will just loose that also. Not unless they "lose" their car! :) They are often "permanently" attached, ie. not removable without rendering them unusable. Kind of like the optional "permanent sticker" you can get for Sunpass.
Tried our new toy today and it really wasn't that great. Did not work at all at 2 of the 6 gates we tried (and we pulled up literally inches from the receiver) yet when I took out my card and held it 18
away that worked. Seemed pretty finicky to the point of "if it's not 95% successful then we might as well stick with the card." YMMV of course. Bridgeport Lake Miona was a total fail (but maybe a special passport is needed to enter there!!!). :jester: :jester:

Only a bar code is easy to copy. Just walk up to anyone's car and use you phone to take a pic and use a printer to make your own sticker using that persons access, not secure at all.

OK, who said anything about a barcode? RFID has been in use forever as exemplified by here. Besides, a barcode would NOT be visible by the gate if under the hood and wouldn't function. And, taking the other side, so what if someone copied a barcode here? LOL, SECURITY !!! Here ?? The gates are meaningless for anything but traffic control and not intended for SECURITY so even a barcode would suffice just for the convenience and the pure unmitigated luxury and freedom and convenience. So those cameras that are recording every car and license plate going in or out of an area at the gates are not considered a security measure to you ? I forgot about the mugshot of the driver when they hit the red button too.

I have heard this many times, but it has never worked for me. If either of my gate cards isn't within about 3 or 4 inches of the sensor it won't work. Been that way since move in in 2013. Just my luck. At least I don't melt when it is raining.
