Am I the only one who has issues with a high school football coach being arrested for soliciting a prostitute and keeping his job? This is a man who works with teens; is admired by them; is a true role model for them. Yet, John Maronto does something not only immoral but illegal and manages to keep his job. Is this because he wins? I don't get it!!!

I remember the outrage when Tiger Woods was found out. He may have slept with many women but nowhere was he accused of exploiting them. Prostitution is an exploitation of women and is rarely a profession willingly chosen. Why is there no outrage about this coach?

If a women teacher with a stellar teaching and coaching history had been arrested for prostitution would she be back on the job? No way!

Midland High School in New Daytona. He was busted in a sting. There's little question of his guilt from what I've been able to read. I guess he gets to stay around because he's the second-winningest coach in Florida history. Personally, I would not want him as a role model for my son (if I had one) or daughter, I was always under the illusion that teschers had morals clauses. Guess it only applies if you lose.

They are teenagers and they look up to him. I am glad my kids and grandkids didn't go to a school that would tolerate that kind of behavior.

That is just completely ROTTEN!

not sure about FL but MA has a "moral turpitude" clause in some districts still, I think it started back in the day, I had to ask what it was before I signed my contract

he should not be still a coach but again not my call

Where does he teach?

Mainland H.S. in Daytona Beach. It is located on International Speedway Blvd. just up from the speedway. They won the class 5 A state championship in 2003. He also coached at one time at Massillon Ohio's Washington High School knows as the Massillon Tigers. He coached there in 1985 to 1987 and had a record of 20 and 10.

So apparently he is a winning coach with not so winning morals.

Boo hiss.

Not all, in fact most, coaches are not teachers so they would not have a morals clause. Had he been "just a teacher", He would have been fired.barf

Not defending him but aren't people in this country innocent until found guilty in a court of law.

Put away the ropes and wait till he goes to trial, if found guilty he should be given the max. sentence under the law.

This is a school that has a zero tolerance. Students are suspended upon ANY arrest -- no waiting for trial -- and expelled if found guilty. But because his team wins, this coach gets to stay? Teachers are at least suspended with or without pay once arrested. The school district's logic is that his crime doesn't hurt or affect the students. Sorry, doesn't cut it to me.

However, I still don't understand why there isn't more of an outcry, especially here. Many were (and are) willing to tar and feather Tiger Woods for marital infidelity. Yet a man who works directly with our youth is arrested for a crime that most definitely falls within the purview of immorality and not a word is said.

The hypocrisy of the school board is nauseating to me. The apathy of the "moral majority" is amazing to me. I guess it really only counts when you are really famous and it involves consenting adults in a lawful activity?

...a wrestling coach who would award winning teams with a trip to the local brothel.

As far as I know though, this was not a practice that went over well with some of the other teachers/coaches nor with the parents in this school district. Prostitution was also legal in the County in which the winning team would be busing too.

From talks with some insurance agents who covered one of these whorehouses, the women working there worked in that profession for a wide variety of reasons. There were not all forced into it because of economic survival.

Tal, legalized brothels are a lot different from the girls and women working the streets. The only protection they have is their pimp (if they have one), who is as apt to beat them as the johns. They have no medical and, thus, are more prone to diseases, especially AIDS and other STDs. They are frequently robbed.

And if a wrestling coach takes minors into a brothel, he should be charged with corrupting a minor. Even when legalized, it is illegal to take a minor into a house of prostitution. Those who work with minors should be held to higher standards. They are not only responsible for the physical well-being of these children, they are responsible for the mental health -- their choices do make a difference and do influence the minds of the kids who admire them.

Red - just curious - Is it the prostitution you mind (for reasons mentioned and I agree if the woman are abused) or would you feel the same about the exposed affairs (like Tiger)? Should he lose his position for that?

Is it the simple act of hiring a prostitute for cash that bothers you in regards to his position? Or is it the fact that where he did it was illegal?

Is this any different than a former president of our country getting sex from who knows? Wasn't he also a role model?

Would this guy be more of a role model if he just went into bars and found 'a girl for the night'? Should he lose his position for that?

I am glad that he chose this route instead of the kids at school. When the news media questioned one of the kids about it, he didn't seem concerned and said that it seemed to be blown all out of proportion. (Said, "the guy just wanted to get laid.")

His crime (if he's found guilty) is not sex, but illegally buying it. Would he be fired for just any misdemeanor...I think not simply because the media would not be interested and the public would never know. Teachers are not perfect. To me, parents as role models are much more important than the teachers. This is why kids have parents (or is supposed to be).

Little humor: I remember my boys talking about driving down "the boulevard" (which was the local area for the prostitutes) at home and asking them if they had beginner's rates on the way by. No way would they or their friends ever have any more than that to do with them. Their response if you asked them was an incredulous, "Are you kidding??!!!":1rotfl:

Honestly, it if were someone he picked up in a bar, I could care less -- it is not an exploitation of anyone and not illegal. If he's married (I have no idea) and wants to cheat on his wife, that's his business and his wife's when she finds out and not up to me to say a dang word. However, this is a man who is held up to be a role model to young men. He is accused of committing an illegal act -- one that would have had one of his players be automatically suspended for. Had he been "just" a teacher, the odds are pretty good that he would have, at the very least, been suspended with pay until the trial (and he better not be plead guilty or not contest or the teacher would be fired).

As to the kids not thinking it's a big deal, kids also think drinking and driving is okay; speeding is okay; pot use is okay; oral sex isn't sex .... Don't think I'd put too much value on their opinions on this.

Illegal prostitution is an exploitation of women and girls. Very few women opt to go into this profession because they think it is a good career path and, if they do, they certainly wouldn't pick working a corner. Sorry, what this coach (and possible teacher -- I've seen some articles saying he taught as well as coached) did was wrong and the only reason he is getting away with it is because his teams win. What kind of example is being set for his players -- the coach can do it, but if you do, you're hung out to dry even before there is a trial?

What he did is much more reprehensible than Tiger cheating on his wife, even if he did do with several women, or even Clinton having sex (but not really -- guess she didn't inhale) with Monica. Neither act is acceptable to my moral values, but both men did these acts with truly consenting females (not someone who may have been forced into a way of life not of her choosing) and none of my business. A coach or a teacher who does an illegal act and gets away with it sends a message to his/her players and students that it is okay as long as you are winning.

I read the articles about this situation. I taught at the high school level, the kids do need role models.

Red, he is a coach, not a teacher, so his contract maybe different, but he does interact with teens male and female on a daily basis. The district should at least put him on a probationary status until it can be sorted out. Just an opinion, until there is an outcry from the district that he teaches in, most likely he will remain coaching.

Jann -- Nauseating, isn't it? What amazed me was that there was a news report last night that a Melbourne V.P was arrested for DUI and speeding. She was suspended with pay! What is wrong with this country that you can do anything so long as you are rich, winning or somehow on top? Somewhere along the line we have really lost our moral compass.

Is that Vice Principal?

But Red - how would you like a job where a DUI got you fired? Heck, half of corporate America would be out of work:)

Not condoning DUI but that's a harsh penalty!

Russ -- Yes to vice principal. She's not fired -- yet -- "just suspended." I'm not convinced being suspended for a DUI is right, whether a teacher, coach or whatever in a school district, but at least I understand the logic. She is to set an example for her students. Driving drunk and speeding is illegal and dangerous, but not a felony for a first offense. This is not what you want to teach your students. I would think you also wouldn't want to teach your students that it is not okay to break the law by soliciting a prostitute. Sadly, I'm obviously wrong on this one.
