View Full Version : A Golfer Who Lost His Mind

Hello-

While walking my dog along Lake Sumter Landing this past weekend, I saw a site sitting in the rear of a parked and "unattended" golf cart that I thought I'd never see again. I saw a complete set ( irons, woods, wedge, putters, drivers ) of an authentic 2021 Bentley Golf Complete Set and the bag also appeared to be an authentic Bentley. For those who don't play golf, this golf set retails for about 9K and the owner was nowhere in site and the kart was parked in the rear, away from pedestrian traffic. As far as I could tell, the set appeared authentic and not a cheap China copy. Additionally, the key was left in the ignition of the cart.

Just wondering why that some people when they move to The Villages, just completely forget about common sense and truly believe they live in a bubble and that dishonesty and crime don't occur inside the bubble. Or maybe I'm just very naïve and didn't realize that some people are super wealthy and just don't care. Either way, that golfer lost his mind.

Must have been a sight for sore eyes at that site. Someone who pays $9K for a set of golf clubs probably doesn't care if they are stolen. Buy more. Or maybe they were knock-offs. Or maybe he was hiding, waiting to shoot a would-be thief.

My husband left his bag with starter so he could go to bathroom, someone came up, told starter, he was given permission to test out $1200 putter, husband came back, asked starter where putter was, starter pointed to golfer who was starting to drive away, stopped him, got putter back, close call. Be careful folks.

This is probably off topic.

I tried golf when I first came to TV, it wasn’t for me. The question I have is can a $1200 putter really improve someone’s putting? I play piano and will a $25,000 Steinway make me play the piano better ? NO Way it’s the pianist not the instrument. So I’m guessing it’s the golfer not the club that makes the golfer better at putting.

Probably wanting someone to steal it for insurance money? Or money not factor to him.

In the hands of someone who does know what he/she is doing, the $25K Steinway will create a sound as if from Heaven. And the $1200 putter may be enough more true to the line and speed to win some tournaments. Most of us can't make either of those things happen, but some people can.

Sometimes equipment does make a difference. You wouldn't expect to go bowling and use a house ball and shoes and expect to carry a 200 or 250 average in a league.

No need to guess. It is absolutely true that expensive equipment will not create a good golfer.

While that is true, improperly fit equipment can make the game almost impossible to play. Good equipment can help a person to play better,

Having said that, $9,000 for a set of golf clubs and $1,200 for a putter is absurd. That $1,200 putter is not going to improve a player's putting over a $200 putter. But, a decent well balanced, forgiving and correctly fit putter will help a player make more putts than a miniature golf putter.

I don't know of one PGA Tour player that uses a $1,200 putter. If it helped to make more putts, they's all be using it.

I'm guessing that it gold plated or something like that.

As far as a $25,000 Steinway goes it also may have fancy inlays, ivory keys, and more expensive finish details that have nothing to do with the sound.

I went to Walmart and Publix last week and when leaving the stores noticed at least 6 golf carts with clubs in the back and no one in any of the carts. If someone was inclined to steal them, it could be done in seconds. I presume some people think it won’t happen to them.

When I first moved to TV about 12 years ago, you could leave your clubs on your cart, the keys in it and go anywhere you wanted and did not have to worry. Now I have to chain my clubs to my cart an if I leave it for more than a minute I always take my keys. I even lock my storage compartments. Also, just like like when we were kids, we could even leave our doors open at home and never had a problem. About six or seven years ago this started to change. I believe thieves began to see TV as a ripe environment of old people and an easy target. Just like every where else, when population grows, and in this case unchecked, so do crime statistics. When I first came to TV I believe it was “Florida’s Friendliest Home Town” not any more.

I follow an incredible land scape and wildlife artist on YouTube. When asked hot much he spends on brushes he said he uses the cheapest brushes he can find. His comment was the brushes are only as good as the artist using them.

Does a Rolex keep time better than a Citizen? Will a Bentley get you to Publix any better than a Ford? Does that Louis Vitton purse really cradle your goods better than a bag from Bealls? Obviously, no. But...how a person chooses to spend their money is their business, and does not affect me in the least. Who am I to judge? If the purchase of luxury goods makes someone happy, I say go for it. However, I will take steps to at least discourage the casual/opportunistic thief. If someone really wants your clubs/car/purse, etc., they are going to get it.

The old joke is to wait until Tuesday to check Play It Again Sports to see if your "lost" wedge (which you left lying just off the last green) is for sale. The store needs the time on Monday to record it in its inventory and attach a price sticker.

Being as open and accessible as the no security Villages are is an open invitation to the less than honest people that are everywhere. Add hard times and people out of work from Covid and even some who are more or less honest people will get desperate and resort to dishonesty, so beware and be safe and protect yourself and your belongings. The first line of defense is always in your hands.

I wonder where this cart was parked. I wonder if there was really a key in the ignition or that was added to make the story more compelling. I wonder if the clubs were locked in. I wonder why some people are less worried than others about things like this. Some people move here from areas that are more dangerous and have more crime and some people move here from safer suburban areas. That said, I think there are more people who steal now than there used to be, but I believe that most of the people who LIVE in The Villages would not steal those clubs or that cart.

I also know that The Villages has less crime by far than most areas in the U.S.

I still would not leave my clubs in a public place unattended. But they are far safer here than in most other places in this State or in this Country.

SUMTER County , FL | Crime Statistics | Neighborhoods | Gangs Probably true but it just takes ONE bad apple to steal a car, cart, clubs or whatever. While you may not read about it in "The Happy News" sh1t does sometimes happen even here in the "happiest place on earth." Sumter county is NOT JUST The Villages and it's easy to import some bad guys from outside the bubble but inside the county. One would have to be quite naive or living in a cocoon to think nothing bad ever happens here....like stealing golf clubs or dumping a body out of a golf cart into the bushes.

Personally, I feel that there is plenty of crime in TV Land. We had our home broken into 5 years ago and $5000 in equipment stolen, never recovered by Police. Many criminal eyes are on Villager's homes when they are away. The criminals get info about people that are away from their friends that drive trucks around and act as laborers. Always lock your doors! And install cameras as much as possible. What do you expect? TV Land is an island of super have's surrounded by seas of super have nots - AKA wealth disparity.

Thanks for the reply, but even with all the stats that indicate this is a very safe area, anyone at anytime can become a victim of crime no matter where they live. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to leave expensive equipment unsecure and expect that everyone here in The Villages will follow the golden rule. If I used your reasoning and thought nothing would ever happen to me, then I shouldn't wear a seat belt while driving my gold cart since my chances of being involved in a major golf cart crash are minimal at best. Everyone should just used a little common sense.

I always take the time to lock my clubs.

Husband bought putter eons ago. Value improved over the years, hence, it becomes expensive putter that even a thief could appreciate.

My husband left his bag with starter so he could go to bathroom, someone came up, told starter, he was given permission to test out $1200 putter, husband came back, asked starter where putter was, starter pointed to golfer who was starting to drive away, stopped him, got putter back, close call. Be careful folks.

$1200 putter........why that’s almost a stimulus check. Must be a scratch golfer?

I wonder what a $1200 putter looks like, and if there are any more expensive ones?
I found this on the Internet: "The World's Most Expensive Putters" by golfdigest.com

Yes, there are much more expensive putters out there.

Wrong you are Doc. The soundboard, woods, strings, and other main components of a piano would be significantly better for a $25,000 Steinway than, say, a $10,000 Yamaha. No comparison. It's far more than the additioanl things you noted.

He probably is planning to buy new clubs with his stimulus check.

I’ve been reading this forum for two years, & want to thank you John for all your excellent input on every subject you reply to. We’re buying in April & plan to be in TV the rest of our lives. So much of the knowledge I’ve attained has been through your responses. Thanks again!

There are days I wish someone would steal my clubs.

I continue to leave my clubs vulnerable to theft, and I continue to be disappointed. Even thieves don't want my clubs.
