If TPTB are going to delete an entire thread it would be extremely helpful if the members of the community were told why it was deleted.
Even with all the censorship on Facebook and Twitter, those sites at least offer some explanation, albeit in the vaguest of terms. ("Your post violated community standards ... ")
As someone pointed out the other day (I can't find the message right now -- maybe it was deleted, too), when people take the time to write posts and engage in discussion, only to have their efforts negated when the thread disappears, it doesn't encourage dialogue.
