That would be a real fossil, not the residents! I walk my dog (Meg) behind Buttonwood Run in the undeveloped area where Patio Villas are destined for construction. I noticed corral like rocks, and usually collect a few while Meg and I are walking. After learning that this part of Fl was underwater in the distant past, I made a habit of looking at the rocks more closely and was delighted to pick up a fossilized sea urchin. Its beautiful and intact.

My dad's cousin owned some land in ALVA, and he had some excavation done there He got curious, and sent some fossilized shells to an old army buddy that works at the smithsonian to be carbon dated. This stuff was only down about 4 feet, and they dated it at about 800,000 years old. AMAZING!!

I will have to get one of my computer savvy friends to upload the photo for me. I am thrilled to have found such a unique treasure. Most amazing is that that these rocks are just exposed where the earth movers prepared the building sites. Sandra:smiley:

WOW!! How big is that? Is it attached to that background or is that just for the photo background? How absolutely beautiful!! Perfect. It is related to the starfish right?

I'm not sure what the fossil was/is, but the same design is on the cushion covers at SeaBreeze. The fossil is about 3 inches round, and I took the photo of it when placed on my kitchen counter for contrast. I am so thrilled, and now look even more carefully while walking Meg :) Appreciate all the input, as well as my more computer savvy new friend PT for posting the photo. Sandra

As soon as I read your post and took another look at the photo I saw how obvious the background is a kitchen counter. Duh. Nice counter top by the way.
Thanks P. When I have photos to download, will you do them for me too?

Really nice.
I now have funny visions of hundreds of seniors with metal detectors and shovels etc decending on empty Buttonwood lots.

Thank you all for your great responses to my find. I think the fossil is either a star fish or sea urchin. I will have to do some online research to determine what it is, and how old. Got any suggestions?

I'd contact someone from this club if it were me and I wanted more info. I think it is very interesting. Also, there is a fossil, mineral and gem show/fair at the Central Florida Fairgrounds October 8 and 9.
I love that sort of thing. I've got this weird interest in rocks and gems. I have a habit of picking up interesting rocks. It has to strike my interest in the way it looks or feels or I don't know what is wrong with me. My sister-in-law saw me casually putting a little stone in my pocket one day and questioned me about it. She said my 11 year old niece has done the same thing since she could walk.

We used to call those "Sea biscuits"...We did a lot of cave diving in
the Ocala area and I un-earthed a petrified sloth bone, which was sent to Univ. of Florida to be analyzed...You might want to send your fossil to Gainesville.

jebartle, what a great story. You reminded me of somthing I hadn't thought about in a long time.
Years ago I lived at Wilbur by the Sea, FL, near Ponce Inlet and Daytona Beach. There was a lake/park area near South Daytona where I would go to relax.
The area was believed to have once been a tar pit where a Giant Ground Sloth, perfectly preserved, was discovered. Many other fossils were found in this area. I think they call it the Daytona Bone Bed. It is all at a really great museum in Daytona Beach.
The Giant Ground Sloth was discovered by...drum roll...a scuba diver who was an amateur paleontologist.

If word gets out the developers will be told they have to stop building so that an archelogical dig can be done. Just think, TV was probably ocenafront propery millions of years ago.
