Hey OP, thanks, very humbling to see the beauty of nature. Also, the way you had a focused bird and not focused background is amazing. Two questions please:
1. What type of camera did you use?
2. Where you on auto focus or manual focus?,
thanks for sharing, your my hero???

I use a Nikon D7500, the bird shots were made using a AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm 1:5.6E ED lenses. The lens with the hood is about 18 to 24 inches long and weighs in at 5lbs. Hauling it around for 2 to 3 mile walks is good exercise - LOL!
I use autofocus most of the time when walking around. I use a single focal point and try to focus on the eye. The blurred background is a result of the long lens (I shot most of those at 500m and wide open (f5.6). (I use manual focus most of the time on landscapes)
Thank you for the compliment. I am totally new to wildlife and bird photography, so, I will be shooting on my daily walks until I can do it without thinking.
Those shots are all a little grainy, I shot at ISO 4000 to 6000 because I was hand-holding that heavy long lense and wanted to keep my shutter speed up as high as possible (over 1/1000 sec) to avoid motion blur. I need to get that ISO down to 1200 or so to reduce the grain/noise which will make the images sharper.
But, I will learn - it's fun and at this time of the year there are a lot of birds that want their photo taken :).
I will post some more tomorrow with a lighter faster lens.

Frank
The laws of photo have not changed. They often are no longer taught. For a 35mm camera a hand held speed is the focal length of the lens thus 500 mm 1/500th of a sec.
If, the shutter is opened twice as long 1/500th vs 1/1000 you can lower the sensitivity
as in 6000 to 3000. Old school perhaps, high speed was tri x asa 400 that you could push to 800. Kodachrome was asa 25.

The D7500 is a cropped frame so it is slightly different, but the same idea applies.
I am learning to handhold a 5 lb 500 mm lens steady. With VR on at 500 mm, some people can handhold it down from /1500 to 1/60 or so (3 stops) but not me. Based on my "tests" during this walkaround. I was able to handhold it down to around 1/250 (one-stop) if I really relaxed.
The D7500 "noise" is acceptable (to me) up to around ISO 2000. My older D7100 is only "good" up to around ISO 400. these shots are pretty grainy and not really acceptable for printing, but are "okay" online. I want to get a few printable shots before the season changes and the birds all leave. :)
I was mostly experimenting with how to hold the lens, and what settings would work for me. I have a ways to go - these were the mostly keepers out of about 100 shots. LOL. I hope to increase the ratio over time.
Also, all my life I have shot with Canon equipment. My first being a CanonFlex in 1960 or so, followed by AE-1's and then A-1, then into digital with the D20, D50, etc. When I retired and moved here I inherited some Nikon equipment (D7500 and D7100 and a bag full of lenses) and I am still learning how to use it.
It's fun.

Great pictures Mr. Grumpy O. - of modern-day dinosaurs. Nice that they don't go on a flesh-eating rampage.

Thank you, and that is a nice bug shot. I don't have a good macro in my kit yet, but I am considering a Tokina 100mm so I can venture into bugs!

I shot those with a Nikon D7500 with a Nikkor 200-500 lens. I was shooting a bit conservative with a very high ISO to allow a very high shutter speed to avoid any camera shake/motion blur.
Thank you for the compliment.

Maybe I should go on a bug hunt next week :)
