I've bought steaks and ground beef from Best Meats in Wildwood, I have had a lot worse than theirs. I like that they will cut whatever thickness you want. They do supply local restaurants so you most likely have eaten beef from them at some point.

had one experience with the butcher shop on 301 Wildwood. Bought 4 "prime" ribeyes.. thought they were worse than choice. Costco prime ribeyes and filet puts them to shame.

Some of it is the art of cooking. That chain, Outback, is serving commercial grade steaks.
It is, or was, shown on the menu. That is the grade below choice. I'm not aware of any place selling meat of that low quality grade.
I'm not sure but to make a prime grade, the meat is not only selected but it is aged.

I'm a firm believer in second chances, especially with food. I once had a terrible meal at a restaurant and decided to give them a second shot, it ended up being my favorite restaurant for several years. I really enjoyed my prime T-bone from Best Meats but like you my wife did not care for her ribeye. Last week we wanted to grill burgers so used Wynne Dixie ground chuck, it was terrible, but many other times it was great. I'll go back to both of them.

The prime grading is given before any aging would be done.

All I can say is that 2 years ago I went to Publix and asked the butcher where his beef comes from-----answer, Mexico. I then went to Winn-Dixie and asked the same question---again, answer Mexico. I went to Fresh Market and asked their butcher, and the answer was Kansas. Guess where I buy MY meat????

Fresh Market wins hands down. COSTCO, a close second for pre-packaged.

The place on 301 is the only one I know of. Never been but did a search. The say they have steak tips and since no one in Florida seems to know what they are I might give them a try. We have been bringing marinated steak tips with us when we come down.

I get beef from SAM'S club. Only their Black Angus though. You have to look at it closely for they sometimes give new meaning to Butcher. The SAMS club in north Tampa is very good for steaks.

The USDA grades beef in the packing plants (I've seen it done in the plant). The three most common for restaurant or butcher shop use are Select, Choice and Prime. Aging has nothing to do with the grading by the inspector, if it is aged that would be done either by the distributor or the end user. IMO aging has a large amount to do with the quality of beef consumers use. Unfortunately many end users don't have the space or cash flow to age beef to 21-28 days.

I may be mistaken, but I doubt it.
I believe that during a previous Democrat administration and Democrat ruled house the FDA regulations on food labeling was changed. It not longer required the statement of origin. Though I do see a lot of food packages do have the claim, especially vegetables.

I was raised on a cattle farm, so it is hard to match; until now. HM Cattle Company has a spot at the Brownwood Farmer's Market each Saturday. Their prices are good and the meat is wonderful, fresh, never frozen. The young man who most times attends it isn't so attentive, more to his phone; but if you can get him off it, their meat is wonderful. They set up across from Blue Fin. Remember, you get what you pay for. Look at their web page.

I spend 40 years in Foodservice Distribution to restaurants, healthcare, Colleges, etc. I began selling fresh "boxed", cryovac beef about 1980 and sold hundreds of thousands of pounds in that time period.
Ask if the beef was grass fed or corn/grass fed. Corn fed will have more marbeling(fat), which gives it flavor and tenderness. I do everything possible not to eat grass fed beef.
I've never seen beef out of Mexico. Could exist, but not the usual source. Most beef sold is not prime. A quality choice product is more affordable and eats great. But prime, corn fed is fantastic. Angus means little to me -- just a black cow. "Certified" angus has tight specs and is also fantastic - you may find that in this area. "Certified angus" is the key. Ask to see a label.
Costco beef is quality - we buy it and freeze it.
Just spoke to owner/friend of a steakhouse chain in Illinois and beef prices are through the roof - so don't complain to the seller. If you buy cheap, that's what you'll get.
Good grilling!!!!

When I cook steaks, I usually buy filet mignon from Publix. They are graded as "Choice" and are very good. I have purchased "Prime" filets from other places, like Sam's or the Allen Brothers website, but I really can't tell the difference in quality or taste between the choice and prime filets.
Although, I can't tell the difference between a $5 and $50 bottle of wine.

Nope... A simple Google search reveals:
Does Sam’s Club meat come from China?
Sam’s Club’s meat is not from China. Its meat is sourced in the United States. Nebraska beef, National Beef, Excel, Swift, IBP, John Morrell, and Farmland are examples of such meat processors Sam’s Club gets its meat from.

I never bought a $50 bottle, but I have been given a few, including a bottle of Don Perignon champagne. It didn't taste any better than the Cooks that I usually buy.

Good to know! I go there but rarely buy meat there except in the deli. I will be purchasing different meats from their counter to try them out. Thanks!

I see a lot of labels that say "distributed" by the US but they do not say where the product originated from- probably China, India, etc.
