Feltman’s Hot Dogs

We’ve discussed the best hot dog in TV but I don’t recall anyone recommending Feltman’s of Coney Island, which was the inspiration for Nathan’s, and is coincidentally sold today in Publix and Fresh Market. So if you don’t mind paying a little extra and grilling your own, Feltman’s makes a terrific hot dog. Not salty like Boars Head and 8 to a pack. After trying them tonight for the first time I’m sold!

BTW, The History Channel has a series, Food That Built America, and says Feltman’s of Coney Island was the inspiration for Nathan’s. so they’ve been around awhile.

It is all a matter of opinion. As to salt, if you have cut back on your salt use your taste changes you do tend to use less salt.

As to Feltman's honestly I never heard of them. Nathans hot dogs from the grocery store do not taste the same as they do at Nathans in coney island. What is in it?
You do not want to know or to even think about it.

Try Hebrew National hot dogs. Due to the casing, you cannot boil them you need to grill them. A proper boiled hotdog requires water that has been used for at least a week or two. Do not dare to ask what that stuff is in a Sabrett hot dog from a NY cart. My friend who had the best onions that he made himself or claimed he did, and had his stand in front of Penn Station is gone.

I find Hoffman's an acceptable natural casing dog. However, being from "New Yawk" and an afficionado of the "dirty water dog". I consider them a bit bland. Sabrett's, ("snappers") sold on almost every corner in the city are prime. Some mustard and cooked red onions complement it. Nathan's come out a close 2nd, with Hebrew National 3rd. Boar's Head are overpriced. With all the NYer's here in Fla-da, why so few natural casing dogs to choose from?

According to the History Channel series, Nathan’s won by selling hot dogs @ 5 cents vs Feltman’s dogs @ 10 cents. It was before my time but wages then were a dollar a day.

I do remember when hot dogs were 20 cents ea, and a slice of pizza was 15 cents. Maybe not the good old days, just cheaper times in our lives.

I lived my childhood and teen years in Brighten Beach and we always walked over to Coney Island . I remember the hot dogs being 15 cents and I also loved the lobster roll bun. And then going on the Cyclone after stuffing your face! Those were the days!

The best hot dog NEAR The Villages are the authentic Chicago hot dogs served at The Great Chicago Fire Microbrewery in Leesburg. Owned by a retired Chicago cop, he has the “real” Vienna franks and the poppyseeded buns shipped in from Chicago a couple times a week. Equally good are the authentic Italian beef sandwiches, also “imported”. He even has home made Italian gardinierre shipped in for enjoyment with the beef sandwiches.

If you want an good Coney Island. Go to Detroit coney in palm harbor,fl. The sell Detroit coneys. Also have food from Michigan like big boys hamburger,slim Jim’s,hot fudge cream puffs, better maid potato chips,Maurice salad from the old Hudson’s store. The owner is from Lincoln park,Michigan. It’s worth the trip.

It was actually the marketing. Nathan's hired people to dress in Dr.'s attire and eat at there to promote how healthy the dogs were.

I'm not a fan of hotdogs with casings. I prefer skinless, all beef. Sam's jumbo 1/4 lb dogs are actually pretty good, I just wish you could get rolls that they fit in. They're more like beef kielbasa than hotdogs. Very flavorful, good texture.

I never liked Nathan's, but I grew up with Hummels, which are made in Connecticut, and so far I haven't seen anything close to them. If I ever drive back up north, I'm going to buy a case of them and bring them back on ice. Delivery cost to Florida on these puppies is over $100 for 24 dogs, heh. I might pick up some Perri Sausage too. They're out of New Haven/East Haven (an area called the Annex). I worked there as a temp for a few months in the payroll department. The office had a window that looked out onto the factory floor and we could watch them make the sausages. Very cool.

Where I'm from in South Coast Ma., there are hot dog stands everywhere. Our's are steamed hot dogs and buns (usually Maple Leaf or Kayem), coney sauce made from finely ground beef and spices, mustard and onions. For Rhode Islanders, they will remember NY System coney dogs, with the hot dog being grilled and the same condiments. In both cases, you can find either one in both areas. Another variation is the works with mustard, onions, relish, and celery salt. I always pickup packets of coney sauce mix where you just add water and hamburg from Nick's Coney Island in Fall River. They actually call it dirty Nick's because he would line the dogs up to his elbow and add to them.

Out of curiosity I looked for Hoffman’s Snap Dogs today at Publix. They may be a favorite for some but they looked like an anemic white Vienna dog that couldn’t possibly compare to a traditional NY hot dog. Thx I’ll pass on that suggestion.

My wife also commented that she thought Feltman’s was only just as good as Boars Head. So I’ve accepted that hot dogs, like pizza are a highly individualized taste.

I’ve seen Feltman’s Coney Island Hot Dogs at both Deaton and Colony Publix. Grand Traverse is a smaller Publix. Fresh Market also had them for $9.99 a pk, which I thought was high.

I bought them about a week ago at Publix in Trailwinds Village. They were $6.?? for a 12.8 ounce package of 8 (1.6 ounces each). Tasty, but they don't fill a bun.
