When did we start folding pizza? - Scotts Pizza Tours (https://www.scottspizzatours.com/blog/when-did-we-start-folding-pizza/)
I have never folded my pizza slices that I can recall.
Taking a break from watching Rami Malek and Denzel Washington's The Little Things which mentioned that a suspect must be from "back East" because he folds his pizza.
And this is a hard movie to watch.
Do you fold your pizza slice? I remember a few people doing this but not many. I am around a number of native New Yorkers (NYC) here in Lynnhaven.
I am a native Cheesehead born in Milwaukee but moved to Reno, Nevada when I was ten. Parents are from a suburb of Chicago.

Wife is from Brooklyn and folds her pizza, me from NJ doesn’t. Pizza here is difficult to fold as different water from NYC.

When the pizza is so thin that you can't pick it up without the molten cheese dripping onto the plate, you fold it. It keeps the toppings on the pizza til you bite them off.

I started folding instinctively not knowing it was a thing when I lived in France because the crust there is thin. It would never occur to me to fold a slice of pan pizza.

We’re from NJ just outside NYC and have always folded our pizza, even as a little kid. Keeps the cheese from sliding off. NY Pizza down here is not New York pizza.

Im an exNew Yorker and never saw anyone eat pizza any other way except folding it. Yes, occasionally saw a very elderly person when I was young, eat it with a fork n knife. I was horrified. Its a regional thing. I notice some people looking at me when I eat it with my hands

My pizza of choice is Sicilian which has a nice thick crust: sort of like a pan pizza but not really. No need to fold it.
As an aside......my Mom used to make home made Sicilian pizza from scratch, including the dough. Oh, it was soooo good. "Manjiare"!

I'm a west coast guy for me it on the size of the slice and the crust. If you have a large slice of thin crust the tip of the pie will droop, so you fold that bad boy.

I am from Queens and spent lots of time on SI. Joe and Pat’s is my favorite pizza joint! And yes I fold my genuine NY Pizza (made in a Mom & Pop shop in greater NYC area) because the slices are BIG unlike the national pizzas chains where there is no need to fold the pizza due to its minimal size.

Yes, if you are eating a delicious, dripping slice of great New York pizza, folding it at the crust edge strengthens the “spine” of the crust under the filling and helps you get it into your mouth. If you don’t, you will need a plate and fork and knife, and if you buy a carry-out slice, that’s not how it comes. Furthermore, you may need your other hand to help you bring the skinny edge to your mouth for the first wonderful bite. If you’ve ever eaten really good New York pizza in The City (not available anywhere in The Villages, alas), you understand why those of us who love it really love it and why we fold it.

yes, Stu-when i was in the city, i often saw busy men (ie: cab drivers, street crews) doing hands on work, fold the pizza to eat it faster, & they claim less mess. i have rarely seen females do this- i never folded, & always liked the deli-style that had the thicker crust with just sprinkle cheese aka sicilian style.

How else would you eat a New York style pizza. When you pick it up it almost folds it’s self length wise thus folding it width wise to eat it.

There is a reason why a constant post is you can't get good pizza any where around here. You hear the same about bagles.
New Yorkers, it is almost worth the airfare to get New York Pizza, bagels and deli. As to Pizza the best you can find is Bravo Pizza in Lake Sumpter. The owner had or has a place in New York. Pizza was, is on the run food. If, you do not fold it, oh no you don't dare to use a knife and fork they will immediately know you are not a New Yorker.

Folding your slice is a "New Yawk" thing. We're not talkin' Rochester or Watertown. We're talkin' the "City" here. OK, we've passed it on to some of our posse living in the tri-state area, but it's a New Yawk thing. Besides, my rule here in Florida is: always buy your pizza to-go. That way when you find out it doesn't meet your standards -- you can eat the box it came in.

I had to stop it for a while but will get back to it.
I like DiGiorno Stuffed Pizza which would be very hard to fold and eat. Never been to NYC. We saw it in the distance, I believe, on a sightseeing trip while going from Milwaukee to Cape Cod, MA but I was very young so my memories might be skewed. We had been to Gettysburg and were heading to the Cape. May have taken US 78 to US 95.

Talk about 1952, in 1952 I was two years old. I don't know who that old guy is looking back at me in the mirror but it would be an honor to be in a bar and having someone ask me to prove my age.
INFLATION illustrated by Pizza. I am old enough to remember being able to by a slice and a small coke for a quarter. That for me was a weeks pay. My allowance was a quarter.

Most nouveau slices don't lend themselves to folding (some will even crack), but if you were in NYC "back in the day," you pretty much needed to fold the slices that were long and large with thin-crust, as the custom was to eat them with your hands as you might a hot dog or hamburger, not on a plate, usually served to you on a piece of dry wax paper/deli sheet (with a paper plate upon request if you were going to "eat it there"). The slice would form a soft fold, and as others have noted, it would begin as a job for both hands as the soft pointy end of the slice would tend to flop down, often dripping with delicious oily cheese & sauce residue so you needed to hold it a distance from your clothing, especially if you were walking while eating as is often the case in NYC (after eating the end first, the rest of the "task" would be easier but might still require two hands for a bit because the thin bottom crust softened up in your hand as it absorbed moisture from the cheese/sauce). Your hands would get oily and napkins were a must but it was SOOOOOOO GOOD!!! I liked mine with garlic powder and ritualistically ate first the pointed end, then the crust from the other end, then the remaining delectable body of the slice. Which got on my boyfriend Tony's nerves like nobody's business. Thanks OP for calling up the delectable memory. I've been back many times but never find pizza like that anymore, even at "Original [insert pizza chain name here]."
Did I mention it was 25-cents?

The only problem with the folding was the oil dripping off so had to be careful of that.
Did keep the pizza hot longer and had to be careful about not burning your tongue.

In NY that was sometimes available as an option (baked in a rectangular pan and then cut into rectangular pieces). If you saw it was available and wanted a slice (actually a piece), you would ask for "a Sicilian." Definitely unfoldable.
