This is a before and after post edit of the Sandhill Crane, I posted a day or two ago.
Normally I just adjust the contract saturation and sharpness a little and throw them up here.
This is an example of what it looks like if I choose it to be printed and do a little fiddling.

Well, whatever floats their boat
I do studies at times where I do not do any editing. It is to challenge myself, to see how close I can come to creating a photo out of the camera that matches my vision for the photo.
I would be interesting to hear what they feel about in-camera sharpening, in-camera vibrant, in-camera B&W. All of which are Post Processing, it is just done by the camera's computer instead of my desktop.
With film, you had to post-process, it was called developing. And ask them if they ever heard of Ansel Adams. His legend is his ability to post-process B&W as no one had before.
Anyway, whatever floats their boar.

Wow, larbud, can you explain a little farther "Communist jpeg bullspit, please?
does that mean your friends don't believe in editing?
What does jpeg have to do with communism. It sounds like there's something esoteric to the term I may not know about.
At the end of it all, are you're applauding Grumpy's editing (as am I)?

Yup, dodging, and burning were actual work, not clicks - LOL
I do like the sharpness of the "after" picture.

I am an amateur in that I do not make money doing photography. I have been an amateur most of my life.
About 20 years ago I tried wedding photography for a few years and loved it, but found it too much like work - LOL

Ditto. I like all pictures for different reasons. It would depend on what I was looking for.

Your second photo of the sandhill crane looks the way I am used to seeing them. The first one is too dark. The camera lies all the time. (Just look at very wide angle photos of real estate for sale here that make rooms look much wider and brighter than they really are.) Adjusting everything to make it look it’s best is standard practice for me. Don’t be embarrassed to do it. My photography professor in college studied with Ansel Adams and taught me to use the darkroom. A couple thousand hours later, I do it on my iPad, not in a darkroom, but the original photo is just the starting point for a photo. Good work!
(Here’s a view of the Alhambra in Grenada that wasn’t nearly as good without a bit of tinkering.)

Beautiful result pp. I do think the feathers are a little over exposed, but only because they look more “whitish” than “grayish”. However, it is still an excellent picture! Nicely done.

Wow! If I’m going to write a book I’ll expect to get paid..His editing needs no approval from Me or anyone.. It’s His intellectual property to do with as He pleases.. and jpeg = one way or the highway.. Communism is kinda sorta like that or is it not? Editing/post processing is a must when You shoot raw and have to think for Yourself.. anything else? I’m sure you’re just expressing you’re ignorance while thinking you’re expressing your intelligence.. Damn hangover..Rednecks Rule😎

I've only been a photographer for 61 years so I'm still learning but you did a nice job with the bird shot.
It's kinda funny to read about folks that say "The shot must be right out of the camera!" because that's never been the way it is. Even shooting Tri-X with a Speed Graphic 4X5 there was some work to do in the darkroom. A bit of hand waving and such under the enlarger.
Now even with digital the chances of conditions being exactly right to get the shot you want are slim. The light, the background, no debris on the ground, facial expressions from shot to shot all can be fixed in post so why not?
Skills learned with Photoshop can be used to fix older shots, repair damaged historical photos and "change history".
All can be fun.

Yup and there is NO such thing as "straight out of the camera" in digital. All digital cameras have to provide internal post-processing of some kind (unless it's a phone). The sensors provide raw digital data, and it has to be converted to color data.
So, yeah, whatever floats their boats.

As a European escapee from Communism, I would say the word is really just another swear word. Good enough to use anywhere.
And as a painter I have to say these lovely photographs (however they were created) fascinate me.

It appears we are about tied on the how long we have been a photographer. Abd yes, I am constantly learning.
I have recently been interested in some black and white fine art. I have never been able to achieve the results I want there yet, so I am learning.
