I believe you may be referring to the staked turtle nesting areas in that field by the villas. I far as I was told it's a wildlife protected area because of turtle nests but I may be wrong.

There is an area within The Villages along Buena Vista, which is habituated by burrowing owls, which is designated as an endangered species area although the owls are not endangered. They share the area with some kind of burrowing turtle which is endangered. They are a small owl which eats insects and small rodents.

Isn’t that reserve on the other side (north) of CYV pass polo fields on right going north. OP maybe talking about field on south side of those CYVs which is the polo field.

Whoops, you’re right on the map is either the horse farm plots or the new rec center?

I saw the flags today on my way to Best Meats. They looked to be somewhat evenly spaced out and there were a lot of them, so probably not nesting sites. I don't know why they'd put a new rec center there, it's only a few blocks away from the Savannah Center. This is the grassy field facing Barboza Drive where it meets Liendo Lane.

The only new rec center going in north in district 4 going to be at old church property that adjoins district 4. I don’t have clue what they doing on BV?

According to the Sumter County Property Appraiser's website, those 48 or so acres belong to The Villages. Its use is listed as a horse farm.

There is also a protected area for turtles (actually, I think they are gopher tortoises, but I can’t keep the differences straight) on Belle Meade between Buena Vista and Mulberry Rec Center. It has stakes and flags at the active nests right now. People whose houses back onto the preserve can watch them lumbering around. There is also a bench on Belle Meade, I believe, for those who want to sit and watch. Bring binoculars.

It is a gopher tortoise sanctuary. Each stake represents a turtle nest and are put there so mowers can avoid them.

That's why I'm curious about all the day-glo orange flag stakes. You can see them from BV as you're driving by.

Those flags are there so that folks won't step into the horse poop. I can make up **** just like everyone else.
