A sinkhole just opened up this morning at the intersection of Del Mar and Ventura. A Villages van is nose down in the hole and cops have blocked off the area.

We tried to drive down Del Mar about a half hour ago. At that time there were a couple cop cars. I didn't see any (identifiable) news media. There is a flashing sign parked on Del Mar as you turn from Rio Grande saying the road is closed at Ventura. We drove down Del Mar around 8 am and all was normal, so it happened some time between 8 and 11.

Oof. We go through there all the time on the way to my Sister's place in La Reynalda.
I can't imagine going into that on a cart, if it'd swallow a van.

UPDATE: It was a water main break, which flooded the entire street, per someone who lives there. So ... not a true sinkhole.
That's better.

Any hole that sinks considered sinkhole. Majority are man made. They call water main breaks sinkholes all the time on news

impossible to decipher your words.
Was easy to understand, to me.
Put the word "a" in there:
"Was there a street drain close?"
You can switch the words around:
"Was a street drain close, there?"
Or you can alter it just a tiny bit:
"Was a street drain nearby?"
He's basically suggesting that perhaps there was a drainage pipe issue.
Which, apparently, there was. A water pipe collapsed.
It wasn't a sink hole. It was a ground collapse. Sinkholes are a type of ground collapse caused primarily by nature - limestone sediment contracting and expanding and crumbling underground, causing pockets of space that eventually cause a cave-in. Other ground collapses are caused by overdevelopment, improper lining of retention ponds, badly-seated underground septic tanks, mining, broken sewer pipes, and so on.

There is a giant sinkhole just South of Palmer CC.
Oh wait, it's Lake Sumter.
Nevermind.

Plus poor construction by Developer using corrugated metal drainage pipes where reinforced concrete pipes required ie Calumet Grove, Summerhill etc.

OK....so there was a big hole in the ground. Natural or man-made? As soon as they fill it in, it will be no more.

Perhaps you should take the "sinkhole" conversation off the web since it is inaccurate

I don’t think we all care what causes the hole, we just get anxious to think we could have nose dived into it, but thanks for the deep explanation

I got it, a sink hole is a hole where the ground sinks, a part of God's creation.
Ground collapsing is caused by people we don't like.

Err, no. A sinkhole is one type of ground collapse. It's not the only kind of ground collapse. A broken water pipe (which was the case here) is another ground collapse. Poor drainage can cause a ground collapse.
If a construction crew cut corners on building a retention pond and the ground collapses as a result, then it's the construction company's fault. If you're best friends with the construction manager, it's STILL his company's fault. If you hate the construction manager, it's STILL his company's fault.
