The Teamsters Union is Growing!!

Just saw this article about the Teamsters Union, of which I am a happily retired member, and their new representation of medical marijuana growers in California (where else?). Oh well; anything to bolster the union and the pension funds, I guess.

I can just imagine a Cheech and Chong skit with Michael Lee, general counsel for the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board, the Oakland City Council and the pot growers having a discussion about the growers qualifying as agricultural workers...with snacks at the meeting.

I know it is a serious topic, but the fact that 100 workers in Oakland's retail medical marijuana dispensaries joined the United Food Workers union is sorta funny. I'm suddenly famished, have a cotton mouth and I'm laughing uncontrollable.

The union issue aside. I may get clobbered for this, but here goes. As a journalist, I went on a major marijuana eradication with local, state and federal officials. Most of the law enforcement officials were men I'd worked with professionally for a few years so we were good friends.

After the grueling all day hike in the woods (I refused to be punked into riding in the helicopter in the mountains and valleys) the head of the regional ABC enforcement hosted a keg party and BBQ at his house.

Some of us laughed at the irony of destroying pot plants, a recreational drug, because it is illegal and celebrating with alcohol, another more dangerous recreational drug. I dunno. Maybe its just me.

And here I thought alcohol was one of the 7 basic food groups. Isn't grain one of them? Just a little different form.
