First thing you need to do is go to the manufacturers website and download the users manual, this will typically have the step by step instruction for doing what you want. While I have done this for 2 or 3 neighbors, it was always with a manual in my hand, clock movements are different and doing this the wrong way can damage the movement.
After you get the manual, let me know if you still need help.

There is a lot of missing information. Age of the clock? Value of the clock?
Some grandfather clocks are simply a quartz clock. Others are mechanical.
On a mechanical clock it SHOULD BE cleaned and lubed. Few people do as it is EXPENSIVE.
Perhaps, too late. To move a mechanical grandfather clock you need to remove the drive weights, the pendulum and the chime tubes.

You are absolutely correct, electronic movements tend to be very easy (press a button), mechanical movements (which is what I was thinking about) can be more complicated, and I have personally seen mechanical clocks totally destroyed when not moved correctly.

Ours was damaged also by our move.
However in Va we had the clock far enough from our bedroom and on another floor that we would not hear it during the night.
Here we would hear it every 15 minutes all night and at midnight no way do we sleep thru it.

We have an antique clock that is not running. Wife wants to get it fixed. Truth it does run. You have a choice it either goes off every hour indicating the time. Like yours
midnight is 12 bongs. Or every 15 minutes. The pipes that the hammers hit, the one for the hours is roughly 3 foot long. I can sleep through it till my wife pokes me and wonders if I heard it.

My husband turns off the chime before we go to bed and back on again in the morning, check your manual for instructions. I would never get any sleep otherwise :)

I built grandfather clocks & I’m guessing when you tried to start your clock & you tried to start it you turned the hands counter clockwise. Never turn hands counter clockwise because these clocks don’t have memories built in them. For an example if it’s 8:00 & your clock says 9:00 don’t move hands back to 8:00 because when the strikes it’ll strike 10 times instead of 9 times. Hard to explain. But with so many movements they might have a different way of setting. The one I have is a Bim Bam movement it strikes once every half hr. & on the hr. it’s strike whatever hr. it is. You might try this, whatever the hr. it’s set at, & make sure if it’s not on the hr. move hands to the closest top of the hr. & let it strike, then move the longest hand ( the min. hand) to the 6 & let it strike the half hr. then move it to the top of the hr. let it strike the nexted hr. Before you move it again move by your hands back to where it was it when you started. Repeat this until you get to the time it’s set at & see if that works. Sorry my instructions might be confusing but it won’t hurt the clock. I would come & look at it but I’m just afraid that you might have a lot more advanced movement than I have, like yours might have a moon/sun dial in your clock face. Mine is pretty simple for this exact reason. We’ve moved 11 times & had to be set everytime. Sorry I couldn’t be more help but try what I said & don’t worry about any damage to your clock.

It’s been a long while since I used them, I hope they’re still in business. But they did a nice tune-up on our grandfather clock with a reasonably priced house call a number of years ago.

No, you’re OK, you have to let it chime on the half hr. if you are trying set it for an example at 9 & you don’t stop & let it chime on the half hr. then when you stop at 9:00 it’ll chime 10 times, or at 10:00 then you’ll be still an hr. off. But like I said there’s different kinds of movements & maybe you could be right just spin the hands around until you get the time you want. But I’ll BET you it won’t strike the hr. you want. Grandfather clock aren’t like a clock you have hanging on your wall or sitting on your night stand. They’re more complicated than you think!

I am going to 'guess' that a gear is worn sufficiently that it occasionally becomes disengaged, or has teeth missing. In either case this probably requires the clock mechanism to be disassembled, which is beyond my capability. The only other possibility I can think of is the chain is not routed properly and it jumps off the cog, allowing the weight to fall. This should be easy to see with a careful inspection of the chain routing.

Mine an antique, as I said it has a lever to chime every 15 minutes and count the hours on a 3 foot chime-polished pipe. You can shut off the chimes by simply not winding the weights
that drive the clock. Manual? I have a small supply of whale oil used to lube it.
