Any suggestions/recommendations of a reliable and reasonably priced computer repair person who will come to home to fix the problem (eg laptop which will not activate either via battery or plug in) etc?

Take the battery out, then try plugging it in without the battery.

Done that, as well as opposite (battery in, no power cord) - neither worked. Thanks.

Can you check that your power supply is still functional, I have seen broken wires and failed power supplies that will cause your exact problem. The final cause i have seen is the power plug solder joint to the circuit board failed. In this case I tried to repair, repair worked, but in the process of putting the computer back together I broke something else....

IMO not worth fixing, like most appliances now days, throw ways when the break. By time somebody come out or you take it to them you got 1/2 you’re investment in item ready to fail again.

By "will not activate" do you mean does absolutely nothing or will not boot?
I have had both and managed to resolve as follows:
If the former, and you haven't used it recently, it could be that the battery is totally flat. Try plugging it into the mains and leaving it so for half an hour. Eventually my charging light started blinking and I was up and running.
If the latter, it could be the CMOS battery that has died. Usually quite easy to replace, but check doing so with your model on YouTube first to see if you can tackle it.
Good luck. These things are very frustrating!

Why fix things today? It costs more than what the item being fixed is worth. Buy a new better one... will last you longer than the fixed old one.

Perhaps because of photos, files, data, etc that are on the hard drive.
Hopefully the OP is aware of the fact that if they do have to buy a new computer, the hard drive can be removed and used as a slave drive to recover data.

You will be shocked at the speed of a new one compared to your older (?) one. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and go for the new technology which will be old in about a year or sooner.

I use the Geek Squad at Best Buy. They may not be the cheapest, but I have had excellent service from them.

If your laptop is Dell, they have notoriously bad power supply because they had a few fire instances. Get a new power supply ( or borrow one ) to test. When you plug in, the charging light should come on. If not, there is no power to your computer.

with the laptop plugged in and the battery in place, press and hold the power button in and count to 15, release, count to 10 after release. Press the power button as you normally would and see if it now powers up, if so your good to go, good luck.

I have used PC Planet a few times over the years and they seem very knowledgeable and are ‘user friendly’. I also bought a reconditioned laptop from them when my last one had a fried mother board and they were still able to transfer all my programs and files. Highly recommended. Their number is (352)504-4914 and they are located on Main Street in Leesburg close to HWy 27.

Remove the battery, unplug the power supply. Hold down the power button on the computer for 30 seconds. This discharges the internal capacitors. Put the battery back in, plug in the power supply and depress the power button. Some of the older laptops would lock up like this and the above process unlocks them. Good luck
