I'm ready to find something new and just looking for some input. I'll even consider older series, but ideally it would be something a bit newer than a couple of my favorite shows which I mention below, maybe something from 2010 or later. And having a number of seasons "in the can" would be very nice too...

I like detective shows and such, but I am open to any type of series if it's interesting enough. To give you a clue to my tastes, in the past I've liked Monk, The Mentalist, some NCIS (the original is all I've seen), sitcoms and various other types of shows. I rarely get hooked on pure drama. Monk and The Mentalist which I mentioned above had something in common...very good detective plots with really fun main characters and a humorous slant in every episode.

Okay, I'm open to suggestions. Again, I will consider any show if it's good.

The Blacklist would lead the pack for me.

The second would be Chicago P.D. Chicago Fire and Chicago Med.

Third would be Roseanne, The Conners, The Munsters, Hogan's Heroes, MASH.

Sorry some of them don't meet your request but they kept me off the streets during the pandemic.

SouthLAnd on HBOMAX is 4 seasons long and I believe close in quality and story to The Shield or The Wire.

Red Oaks on Amazon Prime 3 seasons.

You might also enjoy Godfather of Harlem and Condor on EPIX. Comcast charges $5.99 per month for EPIX.

For example do you have prime video?

If you have access to Netflix, I can definitely recommend the series "The Kominsky Method". It stars Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin. It is about an actor who is an acting coach who would fit right in with The Villages crowd. There are 3 seasons with 8 episodes each and my wife and I have really enjoyed watching it. And in almost every episode, there is an "old" actor in a cameo role that you kind of recognize but have to watch to credits to be sure (like said "older")

Thanks for the input so far. Just a couple of additional bits of info regarding my request...

In reply to a previous question or two...I can access almost any show. Yes, I have Prime Video. So please forward your recommendations regardless of where you might have watched them.

Also, I do prefer higher resolution video. It doesn't have to be 4k or anything like that, but some of the older shows that are so grainy I probably wouldn't be able to get into. That's one of the reasons I requested something not toooo old in my op, like 2010ish or later.

Again, thanks for input so far. Keep the recommendations coming.

OP,

From what you said about your favorites, I think you might like the BBC’s New Tricks. Three retired detectives come out of retirement to solve cold cases. These “old” guys can be a bit set in their ways — which are not always according to accepted procedures — but they get the job done.

The series ran from 2003 to 2015. (We are not through all those seasons yet.) I like the series because you get a murder mystery without the gore and some witty dialogue and interesting glimpses into the detectives’ backstories.

Amanda Redman is their boss. She keeps them in line — sort of — well — not really — because they pretty much do whatever they need to do.

- - -

I recently found another British series starring Amanda Redman, The Good Karma Hospital. It’s not a mystery series though. It started in 2017. I am watching it currently and really like it. Wonderful scenery and cultural insights, too.

- - -

One of the funniest ones we have watched lately is Ted Lasso. I had put off watching it — although people kept telling me I had to. But I did not know anything about soccer so I thought I would not like it. Anyway — loved it — and added more British slang to my vocabulary.

- - -

Someone has mentioned The Kominsky Method. Michael Douglas stars in it and Kathleen Turner is in the last season as his ex-wife. It’s about aging with snappy dialogue. Liked it a lot.

I liked Monk, The Mentalist, and NCIS, so perhaps we're on the same wavelength. I haven't seen all the shows mentioned above, but agree Bosch, Godless, Longmire, The Closer (and spin-off Major Crimes) are excellent. Current fare, Mare of Easttown on HBO is quite good.

If you like detective shows with a twist, wait for Netflix or Amazon to stream “The Sniffer” again for free. It’s a Russian-Ukrainian show, and I think it’s interesting to see their take on detective dramas. Another out-on-a-limb suggestion is HBO’s “Beforeigners,” which is Norwegian. May be a bit too much nudity for some, as there is a caveman who likes to walk around without a stitch on. (Yes, a detective show with a caveman.)

Try “Burn Notice” on Amazon Prime. Ex-CIA man and his girlfriend and buddy do detective work for free to help people in need. It’s set in Miami. It’s light-hearted and fun, which is rather surprising as there are plenty of fights and the girlfriend is always eager to blow things up. It was on for five or six years.

We are watching Gilmore Girls. There are 7 seasons on Netflix. It’s a light drama with very tongue in cheek wit. It doesn’t have much sex or foul language but it’s entertaining. Like all shows it takes a few episodes to get to know the characters etc but if you decide to try it I hope you you enjoy it.

You could also try the beauty and the baker which is a limited series. Some people also like sci-fi is a series now called Jupiter also very interesting with Josh Duhamel. I can go backwards on YouTube to the '50s to some of the very nice cop shows Burke's law was fun, danger man, secret agent, dragnet, all the Colombo's, you can look for poirot as well or anything by Agatha Christie

So many good suggestions but only one mention of Blue Bloods. Such a GREAT NYC Detective/Police drama! Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlbery, Bridget Moynahan, etc. Ran for 11 seasons, started in 2010. This one might be right up your alley.

For detective shows, I highly recommend Broadchurch, and English show that takes you through an entire season with one case. For regular series, The Kominsky Method, Schitts Creek, and Doc Martin are comedies and all hysterical. Another English detective series that is good is Grantchester. For network series, we like Blue Bloods with Tom Selleck.

Agree on Ted Lasso. It was hilarious! Only issue is it is on Apple TV, which we had free for a while. We may get it again long enough to see season two once it is released.

We are also enjoying the Kominski Method which some people mentioned. In the past we enjoyed Ozark, Breaking Bad, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Queen's Gambit. Life in Pieces is funny in an interesting format (four shorts about the same family per episode) with good writing.

Oh yeah, I agree. Loved Grimm.....kind of a cop/science fiction/fantasy/comedy/monster series. Based on the idea that the creatures described in the "Grimm's Fairy Tales" books actually exist. 6 seasons, 123 episodes. It could get a bit 'out there' in some episodes, but in general it was very entertaining.

Not sure where you’d find it, but we really enjoyed “The Closer”.
I second "The Closer." It's LAPD detectives. Always a bit of a twist in there, oftentimes humorous (the Bridezilla episode, for one, Santa for another).

Have you watched House?

Also a really good one was Leverage Leverage (TV Series 2008–2012) - IMDb (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1103987/) These guys run around righting wrongs à la Robin Hood style. (They're sort of crooks--anti-hero style.)

If you are looking for interesting crime dramas, then a couple from the past which are good to binge watch, would be Justified and Dexter. Justified is kind of like the old West gunslinger reimagined for modern times. Dexter is a bit twisty, where a serial killer who only kills other serial killers works as a CSI for the Miami PD.

Good luck, there are a lot of good shows out there, but there is also a lot of crap to filter through.

Endeavor, Mare of Easttown, Inspector Lewis (lots of seasons) Ted Lasso is fabulous (Apple TV). If you don’t mind subtitles/want to brush up on your French: Call My Agent (not detective), Lupin. Another one we found darling is Midnight Diner and Midnight Diner-Tokyo stories (Netflix, Japanese). It’s about a diner in Tokyo (so another subtitle one) and the different people who go there. Oh, and The Restaurant (Sundance, Swedish) - a bit soap opera-y but we liked it a lot. We have a whole spreadsheet of shows someplace…

Sorry some of them don't meet your request but they kept me off the streets during the pandemic.

Of more interest with "The Blacklist" is that the star, Megan Boone, is part of the Developer's family. From Wikipedia:

"Her grandfather, H. Gary Morse, was the developer of The Villages; her mother, Jennifer Parr, is the Director of Sales."

A good detective series on Prime is "Bosch" and it has a new season starting the 25th.

I find very little worth watching on Network TV. These are all on cable: The First 48 (A&E); NYPD Blue (Netflix); Fargo (HBO): Better Call Saul (Netflix); The Wire (HBO); Ray Donovan (SHO); Justified (FX); Deadwood (HBO); Hell on Wheels (AMZ, Amazon); Shameless (HBO); Band of Brothers HBO); Curb Your Enthusiasm (HBO); Veep (HBO); Mad Men (Netflix).

Others...bloodline, last tango in Halifax, castratrophy,....I don't watch any scarey, violent, sci-fi, or Gothic stuff. I wanna to be entertained, laugh a little and if I find I'm thinking about the show latter after watching...its a good one.

:popcorn:Anyone who lives in the Villages has to watch "The Kominsky Method!"

Since you like comedy, check out "Taskmaster". It is very funny and entertaining. It's described as a British comedy panel game show. Five contestants (mostly comedians) are assigned tasks to complete and are judged by the Taskmaster on how well they perform. His assistant runs the tasks.

You can find it for free on YouTube. Make sure it's the British version with Greg Davies.

The first episode of season 2 is a really good episode to watch to see if you like it.

It's very popular - they just finished series 11 and have been renewed through series 15. It's so popular that eight other countries have their own versions - the New Zealand version is pretty good and it's in English. The US version failed on Comedy Central mostly because they shortened it.

I second that. If they could find the right person, like they did (IMHO) with Bosch, would love to see a Jack Reacher series. It has to be someone close to the 6'5", 250lb. guy in the books - not the 5'6", 150lb. movie version.

OP,

You mentioned sitcoms.

My absolute favorite of all-time is 3rd Rock from the Sun, starring John Lithgow. (I think he is a genius-actor who can play all kinds of roles.)

Lithgow and his pretend family are actually from outer space, have taken human form, and are trying to figure out how to fit in.

It ran from 1996 to 2001 so many of the pop-culture plots are a little dated, but you’ll remember them.

Sometimes observing human nature can make me feel like I surely must be from outer space. . .so maybe that’s why I like this show so much. . .

Polar Bear,

I know what you mean. Alas, I must confess that I have watched the entire thing through 3 times — since streaming was invented. (blush)

I felt a little better about my go-to escapism when I saw Lithgow being interviewed after he had played Churchill in The Crown. He said that 3rd Rock is what he likes to watch best — out of all his stuff.

Jane Curtin is the perfect foil to Lithgow’s character. And when William Shatner and John Cleese show up in various episodes, it makes the storyline even better. Jan Hooks was terrific, too, as Harry’s love interest. The Thanksgiving scene that was a riff on the same kind of scene in the movie Tom Jones (based on Fielding’s novel) is scandalously funny.

Uh, oh. . . I feel a 4th run coming on. :)

Boomer

PS: A question for Bosch fans: I thought Mr. Boomer would like it — and he does. We started at the beginning. But here is what I need to know: Does it take the entire season for one case to be solved? This case in the first season is creeping me out. I think New Tricks is more my speed.

We just finished watching "The Kominsky Method!" on Netflix and really enjoyed it. We have now started watching another series that is also on Netflix - "Lupin" . It is a French made series, but all the dialog has been dubbed into English. Other than mouth movements not always matching the audio, it is really well done. It is about a black man avenging the conviction and death of his father. It reminds me a little of "Mission Impossible" and if you liked any of those movies, I think you might like this one too.

Thank you to everybody who recommended Mare of Easttown.

Definitely binge-worthy.

Acting, writing, twists and turns -- all excellent. Jean Smart certainly is coming into her own as she has aged from being Charlene in Designing Women. Her role as Mare's mother should get her an award. She is so real.

Watched it all in two nights and a morning -- glad it was only 7 episodes because we really do have a life outside of television and the computer.

. . .There is a short segment following the last episode where the actors and writer talk about the making of the show.

I am interested in our varying American accents, dialect, and colloquialisms so I liked hearing British Kate Winslet talk about how she worked on sounding like she was, not only American, but from the specific area of Pennsylvania that was the setting for the story.

As much as I liked Justified, when I watched it a long time ago, I never thought they had the Harlan County accent exactly right.

Rolling Rock was originally a western PA beer (Latrobe, outside of Pittsburgh, home of Arnold Palmer) but has now become a national brand. Western PA accents are peculiar in that they sound uneducated, but a study by the University of Pittsburgh linguistics department found that the accent is widespread throughout economic and educational levels alike.

"At first, the producers just wanted the accents to be a general New York sound. It wasn't until Kate Winslet decided to have her accent be authentic to the Philadelphia area that the production got on board. Because the story is set in the fictionalized version of Easttown, Chester County, Pennsylvania, there were discussions about whether to use the "Delco accent", a version of the Philadelphia accent common in Delaware County. It was Winslet who insisted that the accent be used, despite being a particularly difficult accent to learn, because she felt that the community was essential to the story, and thus required an authentic dialect." --from IMDB Trivia click here (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10155688/trivia/?ref_=tt_trv_trv)

Hi CFrance,

When I read your comment here on Six Feet Under, I decided it might be a good one for us to start watching. We are to the part where Nate catches on to what Brenda has been doing -- and realizes that her writing is not fiction.

I like the show -- other than Brenda. She makes my skin crawl -- and I feel like the writers are pandering to a percentage of their perceived audience by taking up so much of the plot with her psycho behavior.

I like David and Nate and Keith and Rico and hope Claire and her mother eventually get their acts together, but I can't take much more of Brenda.

I was hoping Brenda would go away, but I just looked up how long she is in the series and found out she is there from the pilot to the finale.

I realize dysfunction junction in general is the basis for all the characters' relationships, but I am so tired of Brenda that I want to stop watching. But I also want to know how everything else turns out.

Brenda gets too much attention from the writers. I think they are leaning on her plotline mostly because it's easy pandering. I hope her storyline does not continue to take up so much space in the scripts.

Other than Brenda though, the rest of the show is getting me hooked.

Lucifer is excellent tongue-in-cheek humor with the premise of the Devil coming to earth because he gets tired of being cast as the bad guy all the time.

Lupin is an excellent "revenge" story - loved it.

Man From High Castle - alternative timeline where Hitler wins WWII. Absolutely excellent story and acting.

Motherland if you like witch stores of alternative timelines. Verry innovative storyline and excellent characters.

Thanks, Chi-Town,

As I recall, you are the one who got me hooked on Shameless. I had never heard of it until I read your recommendation on TOTV.

I made it through Season 1 of Bosch, even though it was damned creepy. I had to make sure the serial killer got what was coming to him.

I do like the character Bosch, although I doubt that I will ever read the books.

Now we are on the one about the body in the trunk of that beautiful car.

Ted Lasso, Season 2, starts tomorrow, July 23, on Apple TV.

If you have not heard about Ted Lasso, you can find an article about it on npr.org, today.

It is just plain fun.

Apple does not drop the episodes all at one time. I think they might do two the first week and then dole the rest of them out on a weekly basis. Such is Apple's marketing, I guess. (sigh)

But if you are new to Ted Lasso and it sounds good to you, you can watch all of Season 1 while you wait.

American Rust — based on a book, which I have not read.

Subscribed to Showtime to watch it because I think Jeff Daniels is an excellent actor. He plays a sheriff in this one, a decent guy who is in a mess — actually a few messes. Showtime drops one episode each week and there are a few more to go.

You can find the trailer online or the book’s summary on Amazon if you want to know more about it before signing up for Showtime. (Mr. Boomer and I are hooked on the story.)

Aw, c’mon, Bogie. This thread is a good one. This morning, I learned here that Dexter is coming back. I never thought I would watch Dexter but then I did. Who knew I would be rooting for a serial killer. But then I did.

Yesterday, I learned about Mr In Between so we tried a few last night. Mr. Boomer likes it. I don’t like it much. But I like the writing style — kind of Coen-like.

Even though we are back to a social life, the past year-plus got us into the habit of watching television more than usual in the evenings, and I have found some good ideas in this thread.

This thread is not about dog poop or roundabouts or anything to do with the mess our country is in. Nobody is arguing about anything. Nobody is obsessed with spreading their “research.”

Anyway, in defense of this good thread, I have to tell you, “Bogie, behave yourself.” Maybe give us a suggestion for a show or maybe watch Ted Lasso sometime. :)

Dear Mr. Bogie Shooter, Sir:

You are one of my favorite posters. I really like your Orwell quote and I get it — and I also know Orwell would be horrified to see how so many have co-opted his work.

But, c’mon, Bogie. This thread is a good one. This morning, I learned here that Dexter is coming back. I never thought I would watch Dexter but then I did. Who knew I would be rooting for a serial killer. But then I did.

Nobody is obsessed with spreading their “research.” (I never dreamed that the word ‘research’ would make me want to puke. Who could have ever imagined that the definition of ‘research’ could be co-opted, too. Now, that’s Orwellian.)

Anyway, in defense of this good thread, I have to tell you, “Bogie, behave yourself.” And maybe watch Ted Lasso sometime.

Besides, I do not get my feathers ruffled that easily. I am just drinking coffee and picking on you — just a little— this morning. You gotta be Bogie and I gotta be Boomer. We both have been in this silly play for too long to revise these alter-egos. :)

But now I have to go to my book club, with people I can actually see. I guess I’d better hurry up and finish the book instead of messing around on TOTV.

Today on AARP’s site, aarp.org, There is an article “What to Watch on TV and Streaming This Week.”

The writer gives short summaries of the shows.

Dexter is back. (We watched Dexter recently. I had never watched a show about a serial killer before — and certainly never thought I would actually root for one — until Dexter. (I had to close my eyes during some of the scenes though.)

I already knew that Dexter is back, but I did not know that John Lithgow, the Trinity Killer, will be showing up again. Lithgow is one of my favorite actors. He can play such varied roles as Winston Churchill in The Crown to the hilariously confused alien, Dick Solomon, in the old sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun — and now again on Dexter — a psychopath — so calm and smooth to people he meets — who would never suspect him.

3rd Rock from the Sun is my favorite sitcom of all time. I still watch an episode or two once in a while, even though I have seen them all. I love the premise and the humor as all of the aliens try to figure us out. The Thanksgiving episode is a classic.

We just finished Season 1 and, so far, I think Corner Gas is one of the most cleverly written sitcoms, with some of the best characters, I have ever seen. It’s kind of like Northern Exposure meets Seinfeld — only, maybe better.

The episode where Constable Karen goes fishing with Hank is one of the funniest (for me) so far.

One of my all time favorite shows. The entire series stays funny right through the end. The character acting in this series is outstanding. We have just started Season 2. I am happy to know it stays funny all the way through its seasons.

The plots, the lines, and the characters definitely fit my kind of humor.

The icing on the cake is the fact that the Canadian production does not assault us with a laugh track — like so many of my old favorite American sitcoms do on Hulu.

Thank you, Corner Gas, for not assaulting — and insulting — your audience with one of those stupid, loud, obnoxious laugh tracks.

Acapulco on Apple TV

Acapulco has kind of the same feel as Ted Lasso . It is a charming story with some endearing characters. Maybe not quite as good as Ted Lasso but fun to watch.

Sometimes the characters speak Spanish -- but mostly they speak English. I did not consider it distracting to need to turn on the captions. The story moves along just fine -- in both languages.

If you are looking for a light and happy show, Acapulco might be it.

If you are looking for a not light or happy show, Yellowstone will work for that. It has been mentioned here several times, so I decided to track it down. Found it last night and got started on Season 1. We are hooked. This ruthless bunch keeps making me think of the Sopranos.

I am up north right now, and I do not have time today to drive all over hell’s half-acre, in a lot of traffic, to their bricks and mortar office in hope of finding an actual person to help me.
