Cancer Research of any kind. Sadly research numbers will be skewed due to many had a Covid death, instead of stage 4 metastasized to multiple organs. Hopefully research will have a better chance of realigning numbers

Some Cancer type charities are not really a charity they take most of the money they collect for expenses.

A friend of mine has his own non-profit called the Cohort of Disembodied Artists. COHORT OF DISEMBODIED ARTISTS – SUPPORTING ARTISTS WHO USE ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES (http://www.disembodiedartists.org/) It supports people who use assistive technologies to make art. He is one of those people. He has ALS, and has had no voluntary muscle function for years. He lives at home with 24/7 professional nursing staff, and communicates via a special technology called an eyewriter that interacts with a computer suspended from the ceiling so he can see it while being 100% bedridden.

He makes most of his art exclusively via the computer and he's amazingly gifted. I met him and his girlfriend (now his wife) in my college dorm my second year at Emerson. He wasn't diagnosed until a decade or so after that.

If I could afford to buy a dozen of his art pieces, I would. As it is, I did a fundraiser via Facebook last year and raised around $1500 total.

As you want a serious answer I will give you one I would like to start a local charity that helps out those in the Tri-County area that we live in that delivers more amounts of money for things that matter to people that have very little. Just last week I donated a baby stroller to her grandmother living by herself on social security you had no extra money. This week I am seeking donations for a special needs child for a large three-wheel bicycle. The problem with most charities here. Is there a concerned with the very big problems like hunger and living conditions which is all fine and good but there are a lot of people living day by day that just would like to be able to buy a Christmas gift at the end of the year for their kids or some new toothbrushes or a new shirt or sneakers for the kids to go to school

Some Cancer type charities are not really a charity they take most of the money they collect for expenses.

Not charities, but research, right now spending time with organization for men’s breast cancer. Drugs used today are the same as for females, which is hormone based. Research to find treatment that works mainly for male breast cancer, awareness, mammograms, post care, and rehab. 90% dollars is patient based.

I use my time, talent and treasure to assist "Forward Paths Foundation" in Leesburg. It is an organization that helps foster children who have turned 18 and aged out of Foster Care. Often they are just put on the streets. We assist with shelter and food, but more importantly teach them real world skills such as: how to fill out an application, how to open and balance a checkbook, etc. IF you would like to donate or volunteer, check their webpage: forwardpaths.org

Local animal rescues. These organizations survive on the generous support of the communities they are in.

I agree. I would add in such non profits as Community Helping Animals in Need. They help people in our local area who may need surgery, food, medicine, etc. for those who have pets, but have been put under some financial strain. They also help with emergency surgeries for animals hit by cars. Helping many of these people help them keep their pet at home versus putting them out in the street as strays. Our animal shelters are overwhelmed. I like to keep my money local and know that the officers (all volunteers), do not take any pay. All money goes to treatment and an occasional small amount for office expenses.

After a recent discussion, I became curious about donations to non-profits. Which one would you donate a chunk of money to? Family and friends do not count.

Salvation Army has the most money going to those in need, $0.94 of every dollar goes to the needy. The worse is GOODWILL, only $0.06 goes to those in need and ASPCA only $0.06 goes to the animals.
St Jude is a good one although I have no idea how much goes to help those in need, but is a great charity

Sadly non profits spend too much money on overhead benefits travel and so little goes directly to the purpose- folks like United way Susan g Komen ACS - Am Csn society or habitat for humanity have some or the best benefits they can use your money on. The Salvation Army anywhere in the world. Always first on site when the poop hits the fan, with hot drinks and a snack for responders.
In UK I support The Royal National Lifeboat Institution. All volunteer crews, who brave it in all weathers to rescue those in distress.
The only paid and retained member of the crews are the lifeboat coxwains.
The whole setup, boats, training etc. is from public subscription.
Also The Gurkha Welfare Trust. The brave little warriors from Nepal, who have fought alongside British troops since 1825.
Up until recently they had a raw deal from the British Government, but their post service benefits have been raised in last few years.
I had the privilege of serving alongside them for some years back in the day.

I avoid national charities that pay their CEOs hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I prefer one-on-one help, often anonymously. That way I know no middleman gets part of the money. All of it goes to someone who needs it.

I know national charities do good. It just irks me that the CEO gets the first $1 million. A lot of people could benefit if the CEO got $200,000.

That's just the way I roll. Greatest benefit for the greatest number of people in need.

There is no shortage of people who will take your money. You can, you should research
how the money is spent. Percentage to overhead.

Non-profit does not mean honest. Does the top management need expensive cars, a company yacht a private jet?

The best uses of funds , research needs of local schools , animal shelters , etc. community help will be most appreciated. The “Room to Read” organization works to improve children’s literacy in underserved parts of the world, by building libraries, publishing children’s book, programs to improve reading skills, and supporting education for girls.

I’m a retired CPA, and am very careful with my donations. This non-profit does great much-needed work effectively and efficiently.

If you’re interested, their website is very informative, and some books available on how this nonprofit started, has grown, and the work they do.

Charity Navigator is a great resource to learn about any not-for-profit charity and how their money is spent.

I also use Charity Navigator, especially if it is for a specific cause like a natural disaster somewhere. Unfortunately, some charities are set up so that CN cannot evaluate their books and therefore a person is kind of flying blind in those cases - even if they're an excellent charity (most of the money going to the cause).

I would put a big chuck into housing for families and programs to get them up and running. I would also do house for our veterans and the programs to get them up and running. If I still had funds then kids education about the bullying, drugs and self safety

Easy answer: The nonprofit i started and ran for 8 years.

I noticed a lack of job skills training in high schools. The focus was only on college. I started a mentoring program that put high school seniors into automotive shops to directly learn job skills and to build resumes. They had to work as a team to complete a project vehicle restoration. We'd auction the project at our spring car show/ fund raiser. 100% of our money went back into the program.

Spartan Hot Rod (our school mascott was a Spartan) still exists in Superior Wisconsin. I was actually thinking about creating a similar program for the schools just outside the villages. We'd use golf carts as projects and have a show to auction them.

I donate to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, near and dear to my heart. My husband was a 14 year stage four survivor who passed almost 3 years ago. They were there to support me through all of his recurrences, and beyond.

All mentioned are worthy . F you had millions however start a local charity to give out $$$ as needed locally yearly . Sumter and lake/ Marion all have many small organizations needing $$$
Theater groups
Animal shelters ,
Vet organizations
Woman's abuse groups etc .
Food banks .

Many have no significant funding yearly and could use a yearly stipend they can depend on

St Jude's is one of my favorites!

I knew a fella who donated 1.3 million to the Moose Club in PA... a year later he stopped in for a beer and they didn't even know who he was .,.
That’s not why you donate for a Pat on the back

My favorite: FREEDOM HOUSE. Sort of like Ronald McDonald House but for families of veterans getting medical procedures. PLUS - one of the highest amounts per dollar actually going to the need - versus the administration and marketing efforts.

Jr. High Incorporated in LA... My daughter started it and runs it. If you like helping underprivileged women that are trying to get into the arts and music than this is the non profit you want. They are located in Glendale, CA but they help the young ladies and women show their art work and help them get started with performing and name recognition. Their web site is Junior High (http://www.juniorhighlosangeles.com).

Check it out please.

Two I use are:
Wounded Warriors Family Support (Homes For Our Troops)
DAV Charitable Service Trust.

Most of the donations to these two actually go to those who need it instead of administrative overhead and fund raising costs.

I'd spread it out amongst several. A lot of help is need in the restaurant/entertainment industry. Many small, local places shut down for good. And many local music clubs are suffering, even iconic LA places like The Troubadour and The Whiskey are on hard times.

If you Google it you'll easily find the groups raising money.

Animal shelters are also a good one, homeless shelters and food banks too.

Your donation(s) no matter the size all help.

Local - Love Inc/Centsible Furnishings benefits Lake, Sumter and Marion counties, also The Haven /Domestic Abuse. On a broader scale, Salvation army & Tunnels for Towers benefits wounded veterans. Bless you for wanting to help.

Shriner's Hospital (there's one in Tampa)!
My son was cared for for nearly 12 years, and I never paid a dime. Multiple surgeries, months long stays, etc.

your competition would be the fed govt which is anti family imo based on the history of black households- @least habitat requires owner contribution of some sort labor (etc)& ]yrs ago some wanted to offer free lunches to homeless in augusta, gathat woul've been a magnet to all homeless in a 35m radius!
@ least habitatenouurages pride of ownership - if nothing's invested responsibility diminishes - again imo

As a social worker for 45 years, I have been familiar with many charities over the years. My recommendation for those that most benefit the recipients are:
1. Salvation Army - reasonable administrative overhead
2. Muscular Dystrophy Association - having had a son with MD, can tell you first hand, they do an amazing job in supporting the children and families in need
3. Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - funding is appropriately spent, in my experience
Great question you asked.

I mentioned Forward Paths (Leesburg) which helps transition aged-out foster children into functioning adults. If anyone would like me to come and speak to a group, please send me a private message. I'd be happy to meet with your group.

My passion is animals so, my favorite charity is Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary. They are non profit and I visit often. Located in Hudson Fl. I have gotten to know the volunteers and President Patricia Norton over the years. Placed my beloved Moluccan Cockatoo there a few years ago. These Exotic Birds are not rehomed, bred or sold. This is there Forever home, where they can just be 'A BIRD'.

We would donate money to some of the beautiful places we visit in Florida, like Washington Oaks state park, the Edison Home in Fort Myers, or our favorite, Bok Tower and Gardens.

Salvation Army and Florida Sheriffs Ranch. The Sheriffs Ranch takes in and houses abandoned and abused children until they are old enough to go tro college or be self sufficient. They are both great organizations, people helping people

I rode in the Pan Massachusetts Challenge for several years. It is the major fundraising arm for the Dana Farber Cancer Center in Boston, MA. Since 1980, the ride has raised over $700,000,000
(Yes, 700 million) because every dollar donated to a rider goes directly to the charity. The PMC corporate arm is responsible for getting sponsorships for the various activities surrounding the event. I believe this year's goal is $52 million dollars in direct support of the Dana Farber Cancer Center. I'm obviously not riding this year, but have already donated and if you have any charitable dollars available, please consider donating.
PM me if you would like further information.
I rode for 7 years, raised thousands of dollars for research.
I now have terminal lung cancer.
The life you save could be mine.
Thank you.
