We came back into town yesterday evening and the whole area around the I75/44 interchange was surrounded by police with several ambulances. Police were stationed at the entrances of all the fast food establishments and traffic was horrific. What gives??

I thought it was a Juneeetenth and Fathers Day celebration.
Father's day, together with some sort of car show. Wesh2 just reported on this evening's five o:clock news that they caught the shooter, Wesh said that many of the people who had attended were from Tampa.
There was a youtube recording of the shooting, but it was quickly taken down. This event has been held in that area since at least 2014 according to a google search I did. There was a deadly shooting in 2018 at this event. It is really not far as the Eagle flies from the Village of Buttonwood.

The world as we knew it growing up has changed radically, I suggest that everyone get a CCL, go to gun range and practice, because you never know if you are in a life and death situation, and instead of becoming a victim you can protect yourself and maybe your love ones. Every day we see on the local news the terrible atrocities committed by criminals and believe it won't affect us, but you can't even go to Walmart, Publix etc., today without some degenerate kook looking to harm someone for no apparent reason. There is no where safe today,so why not be prepared in case a serious situation happens. How sad is it that kids can not go to a party, a bar,a dance, even schools, whatever, without some sort of violence happening. When we were younger it never crossed our mind that a shooting would occur. Like I previously stated, the world as we knew growing up has change radically, and for the worse.

True, and very sad. Pray that you're never in a situation where you have to use deadly force. Criminals are running the asylum. They have more rights given to them over those who follow the law. Who gives them those rights? Look no further than the part time residents of the district up north.

Guns in America. We have roughly one gun per every two households. And unfortunately I don't believe that has helped that much even though I'm sure someone will point out a story or two where they were protected by a gun. The fact of the matter is if someone comes up to you in the street and points are going at you you are going to be fast enough to whip at your gun and shoot them. I really don't know the answer as I believe certainly in freedom of guns but there's certainly is a lot to many of them out there

What was missing from the story?
The motive? The reason that there were so many people and fancy cars from Tampa? Trying to figure out the money behind this gathering and the reason that people would want to shoot other people????
Is this a gang related incident? Is this fueled by drug business? Or was it just a simple too much to drink and have a firearm? Or was it a someone who was mentally off?

There is so much crime in and around this area as a single woman it scares me to death. I’ve had homeless people on 301 block my car begging while in traffic. The sales pitch to me was everything is close by and available which is not true. The developer has their hands in everything. Once I saw other developments in Florida I realized there’s not much for a single woman. The crime is increasing here all the time and I’m very worried.

Do agree. At one time I thought between being in the Bible Belt & the folks legally carrying weapons that Florida would be low crime.
However Florida, I believe, still is 3rd in murder rate. Higher than New York (10th)
Today it seems, too many take responsibility for nothing.

We certainly are, yet don't dismiss the fact that disrespect, apathy, lack of compassion, etc. has increased over several generations. The family is the cornerstone to raising good, respectful, compassionate and caring children who will carry those values to adulthood. They can forward those values to future generations.

I hear you. You are close to everything IF you buy a place close to everything. Not all the houses are close to shopping.
Safety is relative. Relative to other places. TV is very safe in most areas. Depends what you consider safe. What do you need to feel safe, and then where that place is. Right now there are very few houses available for sale in TV compared to other times. So you don’t have much choice.
Personally I fear nature a little more than the people in TV, hurricanes, wild life etc. it is when I leave “the bubble” that I go on higher alert.

Many of the crimes that I read about are from people living within TV, sometimes children and grandchildren of the owners who are living here, not just the communities outside. This is not unusual, there are crime areas in and around most communities. You have to be vigilant wherever you go. I have been driving 301 just about every day for over 4 years now and have never been bothered by anyone.

What laws would you consider "reasonable"? Thorough background checks? We have them. Waiting periods? We have them. Required weaponry training before licensing? We have them. Laws against felons in possession? We have them.
What we don't have are judges with the guts to put the perps where they belong. We have citizens who would rather see police on trial than repeat felons pay the penalty for their uncivilized behavior.
This one, in particular, was a felon in possession. He should not have been on the streets. Police have made a successful arrest. Again. Now let's see how long before he's out on bail, looking for another victim.

We are from Newtown, CT (population 26,000 when we left in 2010) where the 26 children and a few of their teachers lives were taken in DEC of 2012. Never, as long as I live, would I have ever thought that it could happen there! But it did - and it's a "bubble" of suburbia, too.

As I've shared with many of my anti-gun or gun neutral friends who don't own guns, they are in fact safer because the criminals know that many of us are armed and as long as the local government doesn't post gunowner's addresses on their website (it happened, look it up) they don't know who has one and who doesn't. So before they go kicking in someone's front door the criminals are made to think twice. Once they know NO ONE has a gun while they themselves still do, don't kid yourself, you'll see what real crime looks like. Agree with a previous poster, arm yourself, take training to be safe and get a CCL. That's IF you're willing to use it if necessary, the last thing you need is a gun if you're too afraid or otherwise hesitant to use it to defend yourself or others.

I’m not anti gun, but I’m definitely all about controlling their access by those that shouldn’t be carrying. Too many people lack the self discipline to carry, or the mental competence. There was a time in our history when everyone wore a gun. It was called the wild Wild West. Every hot head solved his problems with brute force by drawing his gun. We know how that went, yet it seems many are determined to put us back into that type of society again. More guns historically speaking has shown to make an unstable society.

It also has some of the most gruesome mass shootings in the country. Not the only ones for sure - no state is immune. But you can't blame Florida's shootings on tight gun restrictions, because Florida doesn't HAVE tight gun restrictions.

Much of the human species is too unevolved to carry a gun. They too often base their reactions on emotions, instead of using intellect. That lack of self discipline creates a warring society stuck in escalating circumstances. Unfortunately, we will never get out of this spiraling out of control because too many think the reaction should be bigger guns, more guns, etc. That never stops because violence always creates more violence, despite whether you think your “violence” is in the right. There will be no end to it until it destroys our society, and many start looking for a strong-man authoritarian that makes them feel safe again, and that will end our democracy because that group of society will do anything to keep their strong man in office and be-damned the democracy experiment. That’s how democratic societies always end.

Much of the human species is too unevolved to carry a gun. They too often base their reactions on emotions, instead of using intellect. A government that fears an armed citizenry, is a government to be feared. Much less crime where people are armed.
